Do you use mist filters? Would you do this instead? 🎥

@@SamHolland variable ND feels like an absolute essential to have on hand on all shoots, personal or paid
@covetedpixel3238Ай бұрын
Haven't used one of these Pro Mist or one of its variants since 1999, when we were all using these stupid things, to get our 1/4" or 1/3" interlaced almost standard-def CCD camcorders (European PAL versions to shoot 50 interlaced fields per second which was supposed to be -kinda sorta almost like 24 frames per second) to "look like film" to achieve that "film look" along with those retarded rotating vibrating glass lens adapters to mount a "real" lens on front of the stupid things. Then people would gather around these cheap small CRT TV sets and watch these cinematic masterpieces re-interlaced at 60 interlaced fields per second, and everyone would say, "OOOhhh that is the most "cinematic" movie of feral cats in your backyard that I have ever seen" "was that shot on film?" "it looks like film" "very cinematic-y" (Yes and Phillip Bloom used one of these rigged out contraptions to make film-like videos of his cats in his kitchen) It was like that Hans Christian-Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes. Now everyone shoots their cinematic masterpieces on Red Raptor X at 120FPS in 6K and they select the highest resolution bodies and highest resolving lenses, then work hard to make it all look blurry and "film-like" You should ask Phillip Bloom if he uses filters when he shoots his cinematic feral cat videos over there on his secret magic feral cat island.

Love a mist filter, it gives that nostalgic feel. It works on certain things but not others. The “do it in post” option is always great, offering flexibility for sure. I tend to use a luma key, but this way is great too! Great video as always, Sam!
@p16rreАй бұрын
LOVE this idea! Just a thought, can you get the same result by adding an adjustment clip, rather than duplicating the clip? maybe easier to apply to several clips at once?
@doublebadgercreativeАй бұрын
Have you tried combining this with luma key effect? It’s possible to get the highlights to “bloom” without overpowering the mids and shadows.

genius :) My first thought on this for me is when I film something out and about WITH a mist filter, but then want to mix in footage from another day without. it'll help it all match. ooooo. love it thanks Sam!

I use a Glimmerglass 1 filter, since it blooms, but doesnt lift the shadows. It softens just a tad without smearing out the highlights. Also it's spoken"Gows-ee-en" blur, after astronomer and mathematitian Carl Friedrich Gauss (spoken "Gowss", not "Gauhs").

When I heard 'faster solution' and 'will save you money' I thought you'll be talking about applying Vaseline onto a lens for a similar effect lol. Great video btw!

Thank you for an interesting video. I'm doing a lot of iPhone video and find that using any filter can be a bit of a pain in the bum. I'm using Resolve and K+F Black mist filters.Whilst the results from using no filter and Resolve are pretty good they don't quite give the effect of the filter. However, as you have said, in shooting naked there aren't any baked in effects which gives more choice. ND filters are also a major pain in the bum and I have started to experiment using motion blur in post as a convenient alternative. So far the results are pretty encouraging. Any thoughts?

I would recommend to use Halation effect instead of this (this one reminds me classic 'Orton effect'). There is Halation effect in DaVinci Resolve which is free or you can choose (and buy - unfortunately they are not free probably) a dedicated Halation plugin for the NLE of your choice. Halation from the very beginning works with Highlights only and has much more control over it. And is not this manipulation with the second layer giving the same result as adding 'Glow' effect? Or FCPX doesn't have 'Glow' effect? In any case, Halation is a way to go.

Is there an easy way to apply this effect on the end of the project to all clips of the timeline? I’m working with Davinci resolve

Interesting little tip. I was thinking of getting a Mist Filter for my Drone to film the Illuminations this season. I will give it a go and see how it stacks up against, my weapon of choice, Davinci Resolve's Halation and Glow effects in the Colour Page. BTW my mate who has a Blackpool vlogging channel, with close to your subs, has been given quite a few eBikes to review over the last couple of years. He has nothing to do with bikes on his channel yet they still keep asking him to review the odd bike. Maybe you could reach out to review a bike while doing Videography Tutorial?
