@@Seastallion Mine were on the first ship of Dutch immigrants to New York ( Nieuw Amsterdam ) in 1624 ,Their surname was Vigne ,they were actually French Huguenots who had fled to the Netherlands after the catholics massacred more than 100,000 Huguenots in the St. Batholomew's Day massacre in 1577 . The first male of European ancestry born in New York was my ancestor Jean Vigne,he was my grandmother's ( 14 generations back ) brother

A great prequel to this movie is "Last of the Mohicans" which takes place about 25 years before the time period of "The Patriot". Which ties in with the events that Mel Gibson's character alluded to in Patriot.

@@Beery1962 historians wildly believe that Last of the Mohicans while the main characters not being specific historical people, the battle scenes and way of life shown are the most accurate ever shown in film of that time period. Also, Daniel Day-Lewis lived in the wilderness for something like 6 months before filming to understand the Mohicans way of life.

While the film might have dramatized the American Revolution, its message that Freedom is a precious thing that is hard won with blood and tears is an important one and I'm happy that the boys were able to pick up on this as many of the youth in America right now do not appreciate this truth.

@@randomanton They had to capiculate to Georgia and South Carolina who threatened to walk out of the union conference if slavery was abolished in the DoI, which would have lost the war before it even started. So they kicked the can down the road, the South continued to pull their bullshit, until it all came to a head 80 years later and America had to spill it's own blood to abolish it.

I can tell both men experienced a high level of emotion. There was once a city of patriots whom had a cannon placed in the center of their town. During the opening months of the revolution, the British redcoats were confiscating all arms and ammunition and called on the city to surrender their cannon. The city’s response is placed on flags to this very day: in Latin it was written as “Molon Labe”, which translates in English to the legendary phrase that underlined how and why we earned our freedom. “Come and take it”.

Just completely made all that up, eh? The phrase is Greek, not Latin, and is attributed to Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae by Plutarch. The only way Americans used it during the Revolutionary War was when the British demanded Colonel John McIntosh surrender Fort Morris, he replied "Come and take it." He was talking about the fort, not guns, and there is no indication to know whether he was aware of the Greek saying or not.

The British colonel in the movie was based on a real British officer, Banastre Tarleton. He lead a force of mixed Loyalist soldiers (Americans who stayed loyal to King George). As you can see, he's still infamous in America today. In the movie he's older than he really was, did several things he didn't do in real life (burning the church), and didn't die in the war (alas). He lived to fight in further British wars, and serve in Parliament. We did start calling him Butcher Tarleton or Bloody Tarleton, though, after some time. He and his troops did specialize in destruction, and certainly weren't angels. While much of the movie is fiction, not actual history, it's true in general, and it certainly portrays the beliefs we have about the Revolution. Our forces were mostly made up of ordinary people. Sometimes, countries that dislike us forget how we came to be. We don't forget.

If I recall correctly, Benjamin Martin was also based on a real life individual that fought in the Revolutionary War as well. I believe the individual was called the "Swamp Fox", or something like that.

@@Seastallion You're right, plus some others. (I went and refreshed my memory, plus checked their movie article on Wikipedia.) I think it was about 4 or 5 people they pulled from, but the Swamp Fox was definitely one. His name was Francis Marion. Most of my memories are actually from a Disney series or TV movie about him on TV back in the 60s. 😆 Swamps. I remember lots of swamps. In black and white. LOL.

Man, Mel Gibson has some absolutely awesome movies, but this one might be my favorite, the chemistry between him and Heath Ledger is just awesome, and this movie is a rollercoaster of emotions. This might be a very dramatized version of the American Revolution, meaning was there an actual person just like Mel Gibson's character, or Heath Ledgers, etc, maybe, maybe not, but one thing that is accurate, is the absolute loss of human life and bloodshed that happened in order for America to gain it's independence, to be fair it was probably bloodier and worse in real life than depicted here. I truly miss Heath Ledger and wished he was still with us, he would absolutely be one of the top actors right now. Thank you guys for watching this, and not only watching but understanding the nuances in it. I know We Americans get a bad rap in other countries about being so patriotic and "America loving" but our ancestors fought so hard and sacrificed so much for us to be where we are now, the saddest thing for me thinking about it, is the sheer number of Americans living here, actively hating their own country, like any country of course there is corruption, and leaders who aren't so interested in the well being of their own people, and more concerned with making more and more money, I get that, I hate that too, but if the people had more say in things, it wouldn't be nearly as bad as leaders just deciding the best course of action for everyone with no consideration.

One of my favorite Indian films is called "Mangal Pandey" which is a true story of India's fight for independence from Britain, and a nasty, horrible trick that the British played on the Indian Muslims and Hindus (a trick which went against their religion without their knowledge) who were fighting on THEIR SIDE! Once they found out what they did to them, they formed a militia to fight against the British. It's an amazing film, and such a great story.

While this movie has several historical inaccuracies, it shows much about early American culture. If you can understand all the characters’ different motivations, you can understand a lot about America’s unique culture.

Re: did that really happen in war, the way they were just marching at each other as they fired cannons and all? Yeah it did. It was considered "honorable" to do war that way. The US starting to use "guerilla" tactics when they changed tack instead of just marching to their deaths was seen as shocking to the Brits at the time.

Saluting an officer in the field is therefore referred to informally as a "sniper check", because saluting an officer would let any potential sharpshooters know who to shoot.

14:30 "What sort of warfare is this where they stand so close?" The guns they used were not accurate. So the best chance of hitting anything was to march as close as possible to the man next to you, and to the enemy in order to have a change of hitting anything. Muskets and Long Rifles are not the same thing. The Rifle was more accurate but also far more expensive to make and took a long time to train a man to shoot it. A rifle could not take a bayonet either. The musket was cheaper to make and easier to train. The result of such warfare was slaughter as you stood still and waited for the other side to fire.

Incredible story!!!! Most believe that the movie is based on the stories of 2 different men. Francis Marion (Swamp Fox) hero of the Revolution. And Jack Henson, the deadliest sniper of the Confederate army during the Civil War.

I live about 15 minutes from where the fictionalized final battle of this movie actually took place. Cowpens is still considered a master class on warfare. Martin was based on a few true characters but the basic strategy of the battle was captured well here.

One of my favorite movies ever- story about a man who once was a soldier n fought previous war -after he became a pacifist - seeing what war does - his oldest son came to realize why his father didn't want to fight but now his life n Family is deep in it- N has fierce hatred for the sadistic Dragoons horse soldier that murdered his younger son. - his decision to b a pacifist changed quickly- freedom fighter also vengeance for loss of his sons - strength n courage - again a favorite movie. ❤Mel Gibson n Heath Ledger
