To each his own, I guess...BUT it's been rated very highly and it's also one of the most historically accurate Viking movies ever made. 7/10 on IMDB and 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 82% on Metacritic. Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Costume Design. Dublin Film Critics' Circle Awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography. International Film Music Critics Association Award for Best Original Score for an Action/Adventure Film, plus 12 more I'm too tired to list. But, I think you get the point.

Facts: 1. King Leonidas was around 60 years old when he fought this battle..!! 🔥⚔ 2. Efialtis (Εφιάλτης) (The traitor who told Persians the secret passage), actually means "Nightmare" in Greek 3. The phrases below, were actually told by Spartans in that battle a) Get back with your shield, or on it. (᾿Ή τὰν ἢ ἐπὶ τᾶς) b) Then we will fight in the shade. c) Come and get them. (Μολὼν λαβέ) P.S. Leonidas didn't miss.. Remember, he said that until this battle ends, you'll see that even a God-King could bleed.. 😉

This is only part of the Spartan Story. One day Sparta was a city state like any other Greek city. Then it conquered it's neighbors and enslaved them. The population was 85% slave, 15% Spartans. The Spartans knew they could not survive a slave revolt so they militarized their whole society. This is what you see here. The slave, Helots, were the ones that worked the lands, the Spartans were Soldiers. They protected Sparta and kept the slaves oppressed. It was not illegal to kill a slave. This is a very general explanation of what a society Sparta was.. but it's left out of this movie, and most movies about Sparta.

There were also 400 Thebans, The Sacred Band of Thebes and 700 Thespians at Thermopylae. There were not two cliffs that they backed into but a mountain side and the sea, which is further out. Thermopylae was very cool to explore.

I don't know if you guys caught this :) At 10:30, the Queen's order "Come back with your shield, or on it", was a common saying of Spartan women to their men (husbands, sons, brothers), before going off to battle. It basically meant: "Come back carrying your shield (which meant alive and therefore victorious) or being carried on top of it (which means dead)". The only thing you were NOT to do under any circumstances, was come back alive without your shield...because that'd mean you dropped it and fled.

People still go to the Hot Gates in Greece where the 300 fought and died. There’s a large statue of Leonidas there. I have a hat which reads “Molan Labe” (Come and take them) on it, which is what the Spartans said when Xerxes’ army told them to lay down their spears. In the end, Xerxes told his men to kill Leonidas first and abuse the body to dispirit the Spartans. They killed him and pulled his body back behind the lines to tear it up. The Spartans waded in and took Leonidas’ body back. This happened multiple times until Xerxes said he would waste no more men on them and ordered the arrows. Incredible true story.

The cinematography was done to look like Frank Miller's art from the graphic novel, he's known for his black & white watercolour art style with splashes of colour, usually red, 300 was done with bronze saturations instead of greys. Another Frank Miller adaption they would like is Sin City starring Bruce Willis & Mickey Rourke, it's filmed in black & white with a lot of red and CGI sets like 300, Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez directed it so it's closer to the source material, Zack Snyder directed 300 and took a few artistic liberties.

Although I did enjoy watching the movie🎥300 in the Theater when it came out, I did understand that the movie maker's took a lot of liberties with the actual facts of the history of Leonidas, Xerxes and the actual battle of Thermopolyie!🏛 Actually it was Xerxes, as a young Prince, that had to fight a Lion🦁 in a cell with a Spear, in order to pass his Manhood test to become a King of Persia! Leonidas became the King of Sparta by marrying the Kings daughter! Also the brave, fierce 300 Spartans were only able to make their legendary and glorious last stand at Thermopolyie, because of the success and ingenuity of the Greek Navel Commander Themystacles, who through his navel victories over the Persians, allowed for Leonidas and his 300 Spartans to amass at Thermopolyie without Persian blockades enroute!

So this movie is based on a graphic novel which is based on the actual story but not accurate. But many things are actually true like the Persian messenger asking for earth and water and then they did throw them in a well since that meant unconditional submission which wasn't the Spartan forte. The Spartans developed the military in that way to keep in check the Helotes which were the indigenous people they had conquered centuries earlier. The agoge started at 7 but the heavy stuff (military training) didn't start until they were 12 and practically didn't end. Women in Sparta held more rights than anywhere in the world at that time even the famous Athens and they could hold and inherit estates plus they also got military training too (not the same as men obviously) and even take part in sport games. Now the Famous Leonidas was probably at his early 60's when the battle of Thermopylae happened which says a lot. Sparta had a dual system of Governing which was two Kings so Leonidas chose to go to war while the other stayed back to deal with the city. The Spartans weren't 300 only they had others that joined them leveling their numbers up to 10.000-12.000 soldiers which again was very very small comparing to the Persian might which was more than 100.000 (definitely not 1mil as the stories go because it wasn't applicable for the time). But in the end they send off most of them and they stayed back to fight in order for the others to escape and warn the other Greeks about the incoming forces. Near the place where the final battle took place there's cenotaph with a writing that still echoes after so many centuries Ὦ ξεῖν᾿, ἀγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις ὅτι τῇδε κείμεθα τοῖς κείνων ῥήμασι πειθόμενοι. which translates as O stranger wayfarer passing by, announce to the Lacedaemonians that we are buried here, obeying their commandments.

Actuall Leonidas was around 60yo when Marathon happened. He felt before his soldiers and the remnants of them protected his body, reaching to a point where their swords and spears broken and fought with bear hands. After their death, petty Xerxes took Leonidas's head and after that, history wrote that Persians got slaughtered and maimed, drown and killed by the Greeks in fierce battles that came ahead. But not before they managed to raize cities and altars to the ground...

This is not a normal wolf in the intro facing Leonidas. The wolves that used to live in ancient Europe are Eurasian dire wolves, a more formidable breed of the gray wolf. They laid SIEGE to CITIES. They fought armies and won. They were huge, and they were SMART. They are the "big bad wolf" truth of fairy tales. The English killed them, and now only the smaller wolves remain.

It took me a while to realize, but this movie is the poster child for the concept of the unreliable narrator. Every scene, line of dialogue, every set piece, every character, EVERYTHING, is told by Dilios to the Spartans before the final battle. The visuals we are shown are the pictures his listeners conjure up in their minds, they want to believe the magnificence of their dead king Leonidas. Dilios is the ultimate Hype Man. And you can't even accuse him of outright lying, maybe exaggerating for dramatic effect. This is why the lighting and weird creatures make sense in the end. He says "Xerxes punishes his Generals", which he can't even be certain of, but the listeners conjure the visual of a fat creature with blades for arms. Snyder absolutely nailed this one.

They fought the persians at a narrow valley. So narrow that only a few hundred persians could enter at a time, giving the Spartans a huge advantage. If this were an open and wide field it would've ended very differently. But i think Leonidas wouldn't be that foolish to fight in a open field anyway. Leonidas lost this battle but he took many thousands of persians with him. The intention of this battle was to buy time and delay the persians from invading further meanwhile the rest of greece could mount up a big army. Leonidas knew he would lose. But he wanted to delay the persian advance.
