What is an LMS - in Theatrical Cinema

In this video, I describe what an LMS (Library Management System) is and how it helps with running a Theatrical Cinema and managing all the content they receive.

There are TMS without LMS. An example would be the CineDigital TMS. It CAN have an LMS, naturally, but if you have servers like the Dolby DSS series, where one can transfer content, at speed, while shows are running. If you have sufficient storage on your SMS servers, there is no need for a dedicated LMS. We have a 3-plex that is doing this. They have between 2.8TB and 10.5TB storage on their servers and just load the content on the first server to run it and transfer content from there. That said you explanation is excellent.

I did mention that DCI-Players act as an LMS, but due to the fact they have a priority task of playing content, they cannot reliably work as one as their ability to supply the content is significantly reduced when playing. As such, they are only used as such during out-of-hour operations. Even if they were all SSD-based storage, the minimal power and heat-producing units in the Projectors don't have the IO capability to allow them to act as a fully functioning LMS. But it is good to understand these limitations and give the operator the ability to use them like this when appropriate. In some ways, in the initial implementations of a DCI projection system, it was considered that all players act as a distributed storage system/LMS. But ultimately, it is better to have dedicated LMS storage. Even GDC pushed a central storage solution, with high bandwidth 10gbe, to each projector. This solution, however, I have never seen adopted. In the end, cinemas do not want any single point of failure they don;t need. So DCI-Players with local storage has always been the path taken. I still wish they would utilise better than 1gbe network interfaces. Or the ability to bind interfaces. I am also uncomfortable with the "required" media and admin physical networks. This is NOT needed but a good way to spend a lot more money than you need.

One thing that the cinema-catcher-app doesn't mention is how to create an account to be able to log in. I assume that needs to be done via your portal?

username admin, password admin. did I overlook this in the online docs? You don;t need to register with my main portal for it to work.
