I first saw Donnie Yen in a string of films in the early and mid-90s where he played a really diverse set of powerful roles, from demonic eunuch to confused bumbling boyfriend, and he was TERRIFIC in every one of them. I was such a huge Jet Li and Jackie Chan fan, but I had to start buying crappy VHS transfers with dodgy subtitles at $30 a pop (that's how it was, in those days) for Donnie's films, too. Such the complete kung fu film package. I'd watch him read morose Chris Claremont X-Men comics on screen for ninety minutes.

This scene reminds me of those crazy fight scenes in those old kung fu flicks where the hero takes on a small army of foes and takes out five at the same time with a single hit. Of course more refined in terms of cinematography and plot structure, and perhaps a little more realistic. Though I have to admit that after watching those massively overpowered kung fu characters from classic kung fu movies, they make ip man look like a little old grandma out on a cakewalk. Sure Ip man is awesome, but his kung fu skill and prowess is nothing like the old school characters from the 70s and 80s. Gordon lius shaolin monk character from 36 chambers series would rip Ip man a new one.
