PLEASE, BUNNY-LOVERS, READ THIS LIFESAVING TIP! When our bunny was 2 years old, he developed GI stasis. The emergency vet said to feed him a little bit of fresh pineapple everyday -- NOT canned or dried, but fresh. Fresh pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that helps break down the fur bunnies ingest while grooming. Our beloved bunny never suffered from GI stasis again, and passed away a year and a half ago at 13 years old!

@@MysticDesertBreeze We used to cut the pineapple lengthwise into quarters, remove the core, and slice it about 1/2 inch thick. Then we'd remove the rind from each slice (making sure to cut away any spiny bits) and give Bunny one of those slices cut into little segments-- PLEASE NOTE: I should have said HALF OF ONE OF THOSE SLICES! I apologize for the inaccuracy -- it's been 2 years, which makes it a bit difficult to reconstruct exactly what we used to do. But now I've consulted with my daughter, who has an excellent memory, and she has reminded me that it was actually more like half of one of those slices -- that would mean about 1/8 of a pineapple ring. (That being said, I don't think more would harm a bunny either, because our little boy used to get other fruits too as part of his bedtime treat, and it never caused any problem. However, it always makes good sense to introduce something new with a small amount, because his tummy might need to get used to it. BTW I'd always make sure to choose a nice ripe pineapple -- choose one with lots of yellow or golden colour, not one that's all green -- the green ones are really sour! (Also, if the pineapple smells fermented or has real soft bruised spots, don't buy it -- it's overripe.) Our bunny adored his pineapple! I hope this helps you and your bunny! 🐇❤️

@@reenakreindler2102 Thank you! I'm watching my friend's rabbit for a couple months while she travels. I had him for 3 weeks or so and then he got GI Stasis the day before yesterday. I'm so glad he didn't get it at the beginning of me having him, because I would have assumed he's not eating from stress in a new environment (I only know about cats, dogs and birds). I would have just left him alone to decompress. I've seen how crazy he is about food for those 3 weeks so I knew something was wrong right away. My friend never dealt with it either so she didn't know what it was. I couldn't find a vet the same day but videos on KZbin helped me make him all better! I would like to prevent it from happening again!

I'm so glad you found the pineapple advice helpful. But I'd like to modify the amount I cited. I suggest you try just about half of one of those quartered pineapple slices (that means about 1/8 of a complete pineapple ring). That should be plenty! It's been two years since our Pumpkin passed away, so it's been a bit hard to reconstruct exactly how much we used to give him! But I do think that 1/8 of a pineapple ring, rather than one quarter, is the right way to go. I hope your bunny has a long and happy life!

Our bun Henry is currently in the vet with GI Stasis and had emergency life saving surgery Tuesday. We took him to an out of hours vet Monday night and they said everything was fine with him but as bun mums we knew he wasn’t right so booked him straight in with our usual vet, they said he had a huge blockage and his stomach was about to rupture. He had the blockage removed and went home the next day. He still wasn’t eating and only pooping a very small amount so we brought him back. He is there now overnight but stable, he has had some hay, lettuce and apple. Fingers crossed our boy can come home soon. 🐰 💙

We just lost our little Snowie 2 weeks ago. It was her second time with GI stasis. She was almost 2 years old. We are just heartbroken as she was free roamed and was always with us in our living area. The vet seemed to think it may have been linked to her being spayed, but that was 9 months ago! He said rabbits that have been spayed are more prone to GI stasis. Who knows🤷‍♀️ Its not going to bring her back. Don't think I will get another rabbit 😢 So happy Cinnabun recovered❤🐇

My bunny also suffers from GI stasis.... Our vet said to give him about 1 ml of pineapple juice, two times a week, during shedding season. Natural pineapple, not bottled. Pineapple has an enzyme that helps with digestion. Last month we had to go to the vet 3 times, so we know how stressfull it is for bunnies... Hope she's all better now. Love from Portugal 🥰🥰

We've just had a £700 vet bill for our little girl. She stopped eating last weekend and was hunched and drowsy. I get her a rescue food but no improvement. Took her in as an emergency and the x-ray confirmed her tummy was very bloated. After staying in overnight, having fluids and jabs for pain relief and cut movement she improved a bit. I'm pleased to say after a few more days she is eating like a horse and very active again. She is a doh me mane lionhead and there was hair in her poop so I now brush her everyday in case she is investing too much fur. Hoping she stays healthy now as we can't afford too many bills like that but to see her well again makes it all worth while. Sending healthy vibes to Cinnabun to keep her tummy well.

Don't worry Morgan about the content of this video that doesn't seem very cheerful to you: personally, I prefer that you be honest with your community and with yourself, and that you offer us as you rightly did an update on CB's GI stasis (how you reacted, the signs of the disease, the treatment, the contacts with the veterinarian, etc.) rather than a video that's super interesting and well done but maybe out of sync with the moment you were both living. So thank you, truly, for your honesty and willingness to pass on knowledge ❤

Hey Morgan! Im usually a silent subscriber but wanted to butt in here for some advice/personal experience - I have 3 girls (buns), my oldest Holly was a frequent flyer with stasis, I mean to the point where she was having episodes monthly. We went to our amazing vet on a really bad episode and she ended up suggesting to cut out all greens (heartbreaking, i know). She got better but was still having episodes every now and then, just randomly. Ended up back at the vet after a few months and we decided to switch her pellets, from Oxbow to Sherwood pellets. It’s been about a year from the complete diet change and she has only had one episode (during shedding season). Our other 2 girls are in amazing health and seem to have an iron stomach (knock on wood). Our vet mentioned Holly might have a gluten allergy which caused the frequent episodes. Sherwood pellets is our miracle food, however our girls were not happy when we made the switch and they would go on “hunger strikes” for a few hours lol Just something I wanted to mention since your poor baby seems to have issues as well ❤️ Hope it all works out and let me know if you have any questions! Momma to - Holly Audrey and Isabelle (Izzy)

As someone who also has a bunny with chronic health issues I completely empathize and relate to how you are feeling. The hypervigilance, panic, anxiety, and stress of going through stasis even though we’ve gotten through it dozens of times before it never gets easier because the what-ifs are still so unclear and the fear that maybe they won’t pull through this time is heart wrenching. Cinnabun is so lucky to have such a patient and dedicated bun-mom ❤

We have two 8 month old Holland Lops (neutered male litter mates/bonded pair). I panicked last night when Binx was not interested in his lettuce & was not as active- even doing some teeth grinding. I took him to the emergency vet (it was Friday night so I wasn’t going to wait all the way until Monday). I had critical care to start but did not have any pain meds for him. They gave him pain meds (and some for me to continue at home) and fluids (dermal). I was glad they did not have concern for blockage- and being at the emergency vet isolated him enough that I could tell he was pooping (hard to tell with 2 of them if only 1 is having poop issues!). It’s super scary and even though he’s more interested in food today I am just feeling really nervous.

You should try massaging her tummy on a heating pad after giving her the meds. Making sure there body temp doesn’t drop is extremely important and the massaging will help work the bubbles out and move the meds and critical care through

I appreciate you sharing what GI stasis looks like for your bun. My rabbit has never had GI stasis before, but he's young and I've only had him for months, so knowing the signs now is helpful. He does do that tummy stretch a lot, but it's sorta a normal thing for him and he shows no other signs of tummy issues, so I'm not sure what to think about it. Side note: That's fascinating that rabbits can take metoclopramide. The brand name for it is Reglan and humans take it, too. It's usually prescribed to humans as a gut motility stimulator, reflux, or gastroparesis, so I can see why it would also stimulate appetite. I'm personally allergic to it (was put on it once. Ended up in the ER the next day. Wasn't pretty), but I always find it interesting when humans and animals are able to take the same medications.

Poor little baby! That kind of videos make me feel so grateful that my bunny has stomach made out of steel. But once he had ear infection and I caught it very early, he simply wasn't acting like himself, he was sad and didn't let me touch his ear. My vet stayed at work longer that day to see him, she confirmed my suspicion, round of antibiotics, probiotics and painkillers and he was happy again. It's so important to know your bunny well. It probably saved my bunny's hearing.

A way to prevent the GI stasis: My exotic vet told me to give my bun a fresh pineapple juice in times of shedding. I'm cutting a fresh pineapple, squeezing the liquids out and with a syringe giving to my bun [about 2 syringes twice a day in shedding season]. There are also hairball dissolving creams that you can put on the bun and it will help to dissolve fur in the digestive system.

You can also further help by massaging gently his belly on both sides in a circular motion after each gas drops. Add pineapple juice to critical care. In the span of 6 hours you can do about 3 sessions of 30-45 min for each massage. You can hear or feel the gas sound from their belly and the rabbit should be enjoying it. During heavy shedding you can comb more daily 1-2times for 2 weeks with “furminator” to prevent GI stasis in the future.

We think my bun has an underlying health issue. But so far even after seeing an exotic specialist, I still have no answers. It is very scary, and I'm glad cinnabun is doing much better 💜 I'm glad you are also a great bun mom who takes good care of her. My first bunny, who unfortunately passed from something unrelated last year, used to get stasis every molting season too. When he was seven, he started getting it every couple of weeks, and it turned out to be cancerous tumors on the testicle he wasn’t supposed to have (he’d been neutered already). Thankfully he survived the “fancy” neuter that removed the third (?) testicle, but stasis was absolutely hell every time. I’m so familiar with those meds, those signs, and that ceaseless worry. I’m so, so sorry you both went through this. It’s so freaking hard. I hope she recovers quickly and well. I think the fact you know the signs so well you caught it early is the best thing for her. I know it helped us. She’s in good hands with you. ♥️♥️

This happened to my Cinnamon bunny a few weeks ago. Two separate episodes of early stasis in the span of two days. My friend who has a lot of experience with rabbits as well, gave me an the interesting perspective that it might have been a mild, prolonged bout of stasis instead of two incidents. He was also shedding too, but interesting that it has not really happened before during worse molts. You just never know with bunnies. It can be a big guessing game with stasis. I hear you when you say it is stressful every time. When I see my boy sprawl or flop, I have a little anxiety because I worry he might be sick again. So precious but so fragile. Thank you for posting this!

Glad to hear CB is okay and thank you for sharing your experience! My Eden just went through a mini stasis episode a couple weeks ago the morning I came back from travel. Couple of rounds of simethecone and and she was eating and pooping by dinner. I also recommend looking up the video from HRS (I think it’s on howcast) about giving your bun a belly massage. it involves supporting their belly just above the legs, holding the butt, front half flat on the table, back legs dangling, and kind of gently bouncing the butt to help force some movement of those gas bubbles. Everybun needs to know how to be on the lookout for and address the early signs of stasis, the more content on this the better!

This isn't the best advice to recommend since many may not know the amount of pressure to apply. Someone may accidently apply to much pressure to any of the internal organs and make the situation worse.

@@Ominester Thank you for making an excellent point! That’s why I recommend looking up the video from HRS. Apologies for not emphasizing that in my reply.

@@rinzor Although the sentiment is nice, the pressure required to alleviate or move a blockage/gas is far to close to a pressure that can rupture or damage internal organs. So unless an owner is in the veterinary field, this isn't recommended. Not to mention, Mary Cotter, the women in the Howcast video, is not a veterinary professional, and does not have a degree in veterinary medicine. I do urge you to do a little more research before recommending something that could hurt other peoples pets. Also id like to mention that feeling for gas or a blockage is easy and can be done safely, but attempting to alleviate it, can be dangerous.

One of my bunnies has exactly the same issue, I have been told by the vet to reduce as much as possible any fruit and treats to make him eat even more hay which the fibre will help to get rid of the ingested hair even more. Since I have done that I haven’t had any other GI stasis episode. Why you go through is exactly the same I go through with mine. I send you my positive energy! ❤

Thank you SO much for sharing this!! I have a lionhead and he gets stasis all the time. One time it cost me at least $2000 with emergency care. It's so good to know I'm not the only bunny mom who deals with this! I've always felt like it's my fault and that i'm a bad owner

My Boo gets bloat symptoms once in a while, she presses her tummy on the floor, lethargic, hunches, doesn't eat. The first time she had it, I brought her to the vet, turns out she was fine. After that, she's had it twice. I finally got her gas drops for the next time. I feel you with the waiting. I couldn't sleep last time cause her symptoms continued until like 3. I'm always terrified when it happens, but I've got a system down and it fades on its own. My prayers are with you and CB 🙏🏻

I'm rooting for you and cinnabun. Thank you for sharing your experience. We have a bunny who also has a sensitive stomach with all the triggers in the book. We do the whole routine of critical care, pain meds, and gas drops. It's usually a 5 hour ordeal until we start seeing improvement. He's had GI stasis so often we notice even the smallest changes in behaviors that allude to GI. We're pretty over the top with the treatment, meaning every 30 mins to 1 hour we're giving him hay or fresh veggies to see if that'll get their instincts going. It's definitely a journey.

My old rabbit would get GI sometimes. Our vet actually told us to put a little apple juice in their water. It gets them drinking their water again which sometimes help them get their insides moving again :). Hope this helps

Thank you so much for sharing this! My bunny,Paulinchen,is just recovering from one of those episodes and like you said it’s really scary and stressful. I also have the same medications on hand and used them right away when she didn’t eat and looked like she was in pain. The vet had me already cut out bananas and carrots and add a different kind of hey. Unfortunately Paulinchen is not a big hey eater. Best wishes to Cinnabun 💖

Oh my gosh! Thank you so very much for sharing these signs. Our bonded indoor rabbits (siblings, bonded since birth) are almost 3-years-old and no stasis yet at all! 😬 Knock on wood. 🤞🤞 I’m so terrified of this happening and I’m worried I won’t handle it well, especially emotionally. So, when you post videos like this, it’s extremely helpful, and I am far more prepared! Thank you so much for doing this!
