To be fair, the therapist guy was so damn weird I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s never successfully helped someone with a problem like this before. From facial expressions to the odd tone of voice and general emotional detachment, it wasn’t exactly helpful to ask if she was mad at him, she should’ve been prompting into talking more about her reaction and working through it, rather than prompting her to see him as a villain instead of someone genuinely trying to help. Also, if she couldn’t eat coloured fries yet why the hell did they go on to an even harder diet change? It was probably for TV but that more than likely would’ve caused her to totally shut off to this sort of therapy permanently because she found it too traumatising. But I don’t think the aim of that show has ever been to actually “help” people, just exploit them.
@niconova252 жыл бұрын

Well, at least the result was good (I've seen comments saying this was for her daughter, and she was later able to eat more foods, and is currently rather healthy) I'm wondering if they intended to like, desensitise her after the rainbow attempt ended how it did....still not a great decision, but maybe that was the case
@adamgil41592 жыл бұрын
It was really uncomfortable to watch especially when she was coughing and having convulsions and then the "therapist" trying to teach a lesson whilst she's crying. C'mon now you don't need to be a therapist to realise that this is just reinforcing the thoughts and behaviours that they are trying to change.
@pizzlerot27302 жыл бұрын
Exactly. These two idiots are always so painful to watch, their entire approach is just "shame someone and then force them to be different." Yeah, sure, that'll help 🙄... This lady is a great example, as there's clearly more going on here than just not liking other foods. It was apparently revealed later in the episode that she has a genetic predisposition to extreme food aversion, but she could've also had something psychological going on such as PTSD from an abusive relationship. TLC is an exploitative, garbage network, and those two goofy goobers are right at home on it.

Blasphemy! Granted, the coconut shavings are the least tasty part of it, but coconut milk or, even better, coconut cream, just make everything they touch so creamy and satisfying! Then again, coconut cream also has an insane amount of fat, so it's probably not the best thing to consume on the regular.

Cilantro is literally a breed that’s mixed between mint and parsley. Most everyone can get behind one or the other but for some reason when the two are mixed, some people are reminded of “soap” because of a bitter and “fresh” after taste… if you don’t like cilantro maybe it’s stigma so just try to eat a mint leaf with stalks and leaves of parsley (doesn’t matter which one like Curly vs Italian flat leaf the curly one is stronger so just keep it in mind)

I remember a few years ago, I was about 130 lbs or 60kg and we went in a school trip to a lake for a week. It was awesome, but seing all my classmates in shorts and stuff... I just felt fat, even though I wasn't overweight. So I started earing healthier and went to the gym pretty much every day. By the end of it, I was full blown anorexic, weighing just under 70 lbs (about 30kg) . I hoarded chocolate and I would bake and cook every day, but I'd always give it all away... it's crazy how much the mind plays into pretty much everything you do. Anyways, I'm good now. Gained some weight through medication and trying to lose it rn, but I don't wanna go that extreme again, after realizing I could have actually died.

My mother had a weird eating disorder where for 3 years she could really only eat a few things without it making her physically ill or in pain. This one specific brand of kettle cooked potato chips was her staple food, she would buy them in bulk and would not eat any that had brown spots or burnt edges.

I am quite curious how things got to such an extreme extent. Watching her reaction doesn’t make me laugh or feel bad. I just agree with Ken on how with the limited timeframe they were given, she was being pushed too hard for her situation. It’s pretty hard/annoying for others to deal with someone who seems too fragile because having to be careful about “normal” things is a waste of time for people who don’t have such problems. Putting yourself in her shoes isn’t exactly easy either. If they had time/weren’t trying to record the video in a certain way, I think some approaches that would of helped include consulting on a couple more things. For instance, with the colorful fries (which look nasty to me, but could probably eat): perhaps they could inform her and do a blind test first with normal fries, and then switch between the two and see if she could handle that. If she can’t, then they should find the root of the problem and solve that first (if she really wants to be able to eat healthy/more than just fries). Also forgot if they mentioned if she’s okay with beverages or not (can temporarily rely on blended stuff if she can drink it). And yikes, deep fried carrot doesn’t sound particularly appetizing to me. They jumped from same texture to completely different. At least experiment with similar texture/similar taste. Fries and just deep fried category has such a wide range for someone who only eats fries. Carrot is crunchy, but it’s hard, and it tastes…I dunno…fresh/clean? Potato is mushy…and easy to down like mush/baby food (just swallow it). It goes back to doing the blind taste test to figure out if she can handle taste/appearance of the food. I’m just babbling a bit too much since I was curious. I’ll go back into my hidey-hole now 😵💫

In this instance she most likely has ARFID - avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, you can read the specific criteria for it in DSM-5. People usually have a very hard time with food texture or smell or sound or whatever, which makes them pretty much afraid of certain foods. In time usually they start eating less and less, which is why they should get help. Usually people start eating only carbohydrate rich foods, deep fried is also what they enjoy. In time it gets more restrictive, like with her, that she is only able to eat very specific type of french fries now. The cure is pretty much like you described, veeeery slow exposure therapy. It's a fascinating condition because it seems so over the top to cry over a blue french fry, but for their brain it really is that scary. It's the same if we were but infront of a table full of bugs and told cmon eat it. You'd be so disgusted and probably also have a gag reflex, she just has it also with normal everyday food. Though condition to overcome.

My brother loved pepperoni but he would eat olive pizza so I always won unless we went half and half. As far as onions, I don't like the taste and texture of raw onions and peppers (bell peppers). So I chop them up, sauté them in butter, Worcester sauce, soy sauce, and they were so tasty. Soft but with the flavors all there. (Great for burritos and tacos)To this day, I prep my onions and peppers and garlic like this but I can usually use just butter and some seasonings. It depends on what I'm making.
