Cipher Wheel 03 - Keyword Cipher

How to create a keyword cipher using the cipher wheel. A keyword cipher is a more difficult cipher to create, but it is much more difficult to break.

As you have to agree on a keyword with the recipient, you could as well agree on a random sequence of letters long enough for a long message. An "enemy" will not be able to crack this cipher. This is called One Time Pad.

That would be a solid cipher indeed. With changeable inner wheels it could be even more secure.

If you wanted to make this even more complicated, could you use a keyword instead of an index? This reminds me of a vigenère.

I think it would end up being a vignere with no vignere code word if you write out the possiblities in a grid. Since the offset depends on on a relation between the keyword and plain text.

what if you have more letters ? like here in denmark we have 3 more letters of alphabet. also for english would a "the " not also be nice to ad to the wheel ? also what if the alphabet was scrabled ? one or bouth. what difference woudl it make ?

That would make it even more complex. My current cipher wheels all use 30 characters now - the 26 English letters and numbers 1-4.

@@crypticwoodworks If you use 26 letters and 10 numbers on the big wheel (36) you can mark round the wheel(s) in 10 degree divisions with a simple protractor.

Thanks for your video!! I like how you go slowly enough that I can follow all of the moves of the wheel. Great teacher! I’m trying to figure out the cipher wheel in the Enola Holmes movie if you can do a video on that! On the inner wheel, they move the L to the end of the alphabet. Then there are numbers on a third inner ring. The 1 starts at “F”. I’m just not sure how to use this wheel. Thanks again!

Do you have a video where it is a three-layered cipher, the top is numbers then 2nd layer is letters and 3rd layer is letters too?

I’m afraid I don’t have anything like that. I think I’ve seen designs like that but I haven’t made or used any.

I see a problem though, you can easily mix the direction you code and or decode the message. IE outside to inside vs inside to outside.

Alexander Knight the outer ring is usually the plain text while the inner is the cipher. But, why nit switch it up to make it even harder, eh?

I have one of these code wheels that I made years ago........the outer wheel has 26 letters and 10 numbers around the outside and inner wheel has the letters and numbers (36) in a jumbled order and it uses a key word of 5 letters that I am familiar with to generate the code......it is unbreakable.....even the most powerful computer cannot decode it without the key word.
