Your method for cutting is excellent for a smaller skirt, doing the hems in this fashion is sheer genius. Great ideas and so seriously cute on your baby! It has been awhile since I sewed elastic in this fashion, it is actually the best. Brought back memories of my mom, too. =)

Whitney, that was a fantastic tutorial. Easy and so cute! Great detail on how to put in the elastic waist. And I love the various options. So glad you mentioned what happens with directional fabric...I probably would have made that mistake. I'm going to make one or several for my grandaughter. She is the perfect toddler age for these skirts. Thank you for taking time to do these tutorials.

I'm so glad you liked the video. I made sure to mention about the fabric because I almost made that mistake one time with some vintage fabric that I only had a small amount of. Glad I figured it out before cutting it or I would have been very upset.

Love your tutorials. I remember as a teenager I had a really long circle skirt for choir. Nothing like a twirly circle skirt :) You should do video making your circle skirt into skorts. Adding the shorts underneath are nice for active elementary school age girlies who love skirts.
@Whitney_Sews9 жыл бұрын
Hehe they are so fun to twirl in! I always just wear separate shorts underneath (or bloomers in Peyton's case) that way I only had to make two pairs of shorts, but can wear them with any number of skirts in my closet.

Hi, thanks for sharing. I have made some circle skirt for my daughter but I haven't found the way of even it. They are always long at the bias point. I have cut a little at that point but it still long. Please if you have any tips for fixing this problem, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you can it's good to hang a circle skirt for a day or two before hemming to give it a chance to stretch. Then trim and hem. But even then some fabrics are still going still be a little weird and there's not much that can be done. I have some store bought clothing that is longer at the front and back because of that.

Thank you for your prompt reply ! Can you please tell me the length of elastic to be used for a girl measuring 20 '" hip size. I am thinking of using a 1" width elastic.
@Whitney_Sews7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the quality of elastic you're using (how soft or stiff) and the child's comfort level. Some kids don't mind tighter fitting clothes and some like the waistbands to be fairly loose. I wrapped elastic around my daughter's waist while she was watching a movie so she wasn't paying much attention to what I was doing. Then simply test to see what tightness seems right. If anything go on the slightly larger size so they can grow into it instead of quickly growing out of it.

Can you follow the same method if you use a knit? Or should I follow your older video where you made the circle skirt out of old tees?
@Whitney_Sews9 жыл бұрын
+Olivia Lopez I've made 5 circle skirts from knit and I made them all the same way I showed in the t-shirt circle skirt video. Since the knit is stretchy if you add in the ease like in this version the skirt would be way too big in the waist.

Zinnie Blessed Yes, because 6.28 is 2xpi and that is used for finding the radius of any circle.

Hi, I've been thinking about making a DIY skirt and I've already watched a few tutorials, but I haven't seen anyone using the same thing as you to cut the circles in the fabric. The 3rd does look the easiest so far. I made my daughter a skirt today and she got to wear it. It wasn't a circle skirt but a basic one and she couldn't wait to wear it. I am a little nervous about the FOE. How much should I cut? Any sugguestions for doing this with knit or a yoga wasit band? Thanks.
@Whitney_Sews7 жыл бұрын
The amount of FOE you need depends on your kid's size. I just wrap it around my daughter's waist stretching slightly and ask her if it feels ok. Then cut a little extra to overlap. You can definitely switch it to a different type of waist.

how do you know how much fabric you need to buy to make the skirt?
@Whitney_Sews9 жыл бұрын
It completely depends on the waist size and skirt length you decide on. The best thing you can do is make your pattern then fold some fabric you already own to lay the pattern on and determine from that how much fabric it will take for you. I believe for the ones in the video it took a square measuring about 25 x 25 inches.
@lilblu3y9 жыл бұрын
Thank you I will try that :)
@mangairamasamy36647 жыл бұрын
Your explanation is quite easy to follow.. Right now I am making the circular skirts for my grand daughter. My doubt is " From where did you arrive this 6.28 ? " What does it indicate ? Can you clarify this ?
@Whitney_Sews7 жыл бұрын
6.28 is 2 x pi. It's easier to type in 6.28 on a basic calculator and cuts out any symbols for sewers who aren't great at math.

How many inches of ease would you recommend for an adult skirt?
@Whitney_Sews6 жыл бұрын
I do not recommend this tutorial for an adult sized skirt. The fold over elastic isn't strong enough to be stretched over hips (that's the measurement you need to use for an adult skirt) and come back to it's original size. Let me find a link to a circle skirt I made for myself so you can see the type of waistband I put on it.

dag1937 You can buy them anywhere they sell dance clothes. In cheer they call them lollies. My daughter has been cheering for 13 years and to this day always wears her lollies whenever she where's a skirt or dress. I know that there are patterns for bloomers, because she wore them under her formals that she made for Rainbow Girls. It was a pretty simple pattern. Just like pajama pants with ruffles on the end. Sorry so long, but I hope this helps.

How do you calculate how much foe to use.
@Whitney_Sews9 жыл бұрын
Mine came in packs of about 2 yards so I just sew it on until I get to the end and trim the excess. I don't like to precut elastic because I might stretch or more or less than I think I will. Hehe so in other words, always start with more than enough and trim excess at the end is my advice.
@helmyfenisia52666 жыл бұрын
I made one but i didn’t fit me. Too small. Is it becoz my hip too large? I tried but it getting so tight when it went to my hip and it stopped there.
@Whitney_Sews6 жыл бұрын
Helmy Fenisia Probably. This video was how to make a skirt for a child so I used their waist for the measurements. For an older girl or adult you have to use the hip measurement instead. You might also have to use regular elastic in a casing instead of fold over elastic because there will be a bigger difference in the size of the skirt opening to the size of your waist.
@helmyfenisia52666 жыл бұрын
Whitney Sews oh Ic, but why i saw in KZbin , every one use waist measurement even for woman and they devided to 6.28 without radius. But thanks for your explaination.
