Thanks, Memory Journey for watching and for your warm comment. Roche Harbor is rich in history and surrounded by Lush gardens. It is sheltered on the northwest side of San Juan Island and faces Haro Strait and the Canada-US border. The story of Roche Harbor began in 1787, when Spanish explorer, Captain Lopez de Haro, and his crew became the first Europeans to sail among the San Juan Islands. Haro Strait derives its name from the Captain. Limestone quarrying and lime processing began at Roche Harbor in1880s under John S. McMillin, the Tacoma & Roche Harbor Lime Company, expanded to become the largest lime operation in Washington, until gradually the demand for lime fell away and its lime processing works were converted into a tourist destination. Hi, and thank you for the lovely comment. No kayaking in this video. 😲 On June 15, 1859, a company pig wandered into an American farmer, Lyman Cutlar’s vegetable patch looting for potatoes and he shot the offending swine. When British authorities threatened to arrest Cutlar and evict all his countrymen from the island as trespassers, a delegation sought American military protection. In 1872, Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany awarded all the San Juan Islands to the United States, ending the Pig War and finally settling the boundary between Washington State and the new Canadian province of British Columbia. The "Pig War" is celebrated because it was ultimately resolved by negotiation and compromise instead of by guns and force, and there were “no casualties” except the “pig.” Please drop by again at 7pm(ET) every Thursday(US). 🙋♀🛶🤗

Thanks, Carolina Campervan for watching and for your warm comment. We didn't know that most of the restaurants close by 7pm on the island and we were starving after 5hrs of kayaking. 😂Roche Harbor is rich in history and surrounded by Lush gardens. Very nice kayak adventure. Though cloudy skies yet lucky not to have rain. It’s really good to have a food packed and enjoy it while resting. I am so amazed seeing those group of seals or sea lions in one place. Gorgeous boats at the harbor. Last week, I had my first kayak experience and I can see why you love doing it. It’s a bit of a challenge to my shoulder at first though. Trying it in the safest water, bayside ha! Have a wonderful week.

Wonderful kayak trip! It's a great idea to take a guided tour with the change in tides and currents around the San Juans, could be tricky for anyone by themselves. We should follow your lead... we kayak a bit in the area but haven't made it out to the San Juans. Lovey paddle- thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Jennifer Lupine for watching and for your warm comment. Wow, you hike and kayak, too!!! I do recommend weekdays to San Juan Island. The tricky part is you need to book your roundtrip Ferry ticket in advance. I would love to see you on a kayak in the water someday. Roche Harbor is rich in history and surrounded by Lush gardens. 🙋♀🛶🤗
