Pizza Time Theatre Show Restoration - Part Five

The saga continues as our three loyal Pizza Timers continue work on fully restoring a cira 1981 Pizza Time Theatre Balcony Show.
Here we experience the early testing phase of the nearly complete Show using a rare 1979 show reel. The results reveal many interesting surprises, including some interesting insights into the early animation and programming techniques used at that time. At the time that this was filmed in 2007, no one had seen these particular shows with operational figures in nearly 30 years!
These 1979 skits were originally programmed for Portrait Era figures, which pre-date the figures in this restored Show. The rough, limited movements are obvious when compared to the style of animation programming used during the Classic Era of PTT ( 1981 through 1983 ). In a later chapter the 1981 skits will be seen in action.
With the early test successful, the Show is now ready for the next step towards completion.

I'd love to see all the different arrangements as an adult. I recall the 80's "Balcony Show" that we had in North Olmsted Ohio. I'd love to have seen the 70's portrait rig too. We never had a showbiz here, so Rockafire wasn't something I was familiar with... Did that show have all the flags and clapping walls and such? The flags made the old balcony show all the more fun.

Only Pizza Time Theatre/Chuck E. Cheese's featured the waving flags and clapping paws on the wall. The original 'Balcony Shows' also has a 'band board' that actually played real percussion instruments to compliment the Show audio. And let's not forget the simply animated back up singing birds, the Warbletts, who were stationed to the side of the main characters.

I would give anything to visit a chuck e cheese the way it was in 1985. With the atari games, and animatronic shoe like this in a semi dark room. If Corporate wanted to make more money they would open some retro restaurants. Chuck e cheese sucks now

+LeoLion How did you get the original test program, animatronics, endoskeletons, and a 1979 show? Did you work at chuck e cheeses?

I helped to restore this Show for a friend, he owns all of the things shown in this video series. The items were gathered over many many years, through several connections. I was involved in this restoration as the cosmetic restorer and historical reference advisor. My two other friends, one who owns this Show, worked on the mechanical restoration and also in aquiring all the materials to piece together a 1981 era Balcony Show setup. This was a project done privately by long time Pizza Time Theatre fans who used to visit the Stores back then and remember the Shows in this format. The current Company that runs/owns CEC had nothing to do with this restoration project...but many within the Company have seen the end results. ;) It was a labor of love.

Back in the 80's my local Chuck E's had a separate stage in another room that had an Elvis version of Chuck E that had it's own show times. I have not seen him since then, have you located any of those pieces or just the main Pizza Time one's?

Oliver Sasse - i myself do not own any of the figures you mention except B.B. Bubbles. I own the only known exsisting B.B. and created a puppeetering mechanism to operate her for a special appearance at CheeseVention 10 in 2013. It was there the first known audio from one of her Show reels was played publically and she 'performed' it for the first time in over 30+ years. There are videos out there of that presentation..check em' out sometime!

To date, there is no Artie Antlers cosmetics that have been found. For years i owned the only known Arite audio recordings ( via a cassette tape i recorded at my local PTT in 1982 ). He was a neat character...i hope someday cosmetics are unearthed in some warehouse or atticspace in California!

No, that was simply a cosmetic display set up as part of 'CheeseVentiion X' where B.B. Bubbles appeared and performed. After B.B. performed, i invited audience members up to see how she was operated during the performance. I removed her head back exposing the foamcore rig i built, and did a through explanation and demostration of how the puppeteered rig i built operates her non-mechanically. There was video shot of this demo, but to date none of the attendees have shared it publically. I keep hoping one of those kids will upload it !

Omega Captain Aaron The Man Himself - That would be the 'Band Board'...a animated prop that used to hang on the Show Room wall at Pizza Time Theatres in the early 1980s. It 'applauded' the performance at the conclusion of a skit and made quite a bit of noise as this video proves. It features different animal feet and paws that 'clap' after a skit runs it's course. Most of these were removed when the Balcony Show concept was phased out. Extremely rare to find one today, especially in working order !
