This week I replaced a Catalyst 2950, been running since 9/2004, 24/7. Went through numerous renovations that took place on the manufaturing floor. I swapped it out because it's 10/100 ports and not sufficient anymore speed wise. But still running. Amazing

I have not used the 1000 series but with the 2900,3500, 9000 series switches third party SFP works fine if you buy Cisco compatible models. Our network engineers recommended a $10 SFP+ transceiver. Also I've had good luck with start tech and tricentric

The check for coding on c1000 is different than those other platforms. I have had issues with especially copper transceivers in c1000, even if they work in cat9k, 2960x, 3650, etc. The optics vendor needs to change the coding in many cases to work with c1000. That said, we have not had any transceiver we couldn't make work by working with the manufacture for coding updates.

Buy an SFP reprogrammer, and change the codes on your SFPs to match Cisco OEM codes. This works great.

I would argue that a hack does not “work great”, because you lose support and is a big hassle.
@GarrettSkjelstad
@GarrettSkjelstad 3 жыл бұрын
@@svettnabb It's a Catalyst 1000, not an NCS55. I guess "the hassle" depends on what support costs you're willing to shoulder, who you're willing to pay them to and at what point in the lifespan of your equipment. Reprogramming takes 5 minutes; granted purchasing pre-programmed SFPs is faster, but not always an option.
@svettnabb
@svettnabb 3 жыл бұрын
@@GarrettSkjelstad - For the price its not worth the hassle. And in the enterprise it’s not ok to purchase expensive equipment and hack it to work, so why would it be ok for a client?
@GarrettSkjelstad
@GarrettSkjelstad 3 жыл бұрын
@@svettnabb - This is an enterprise practice, so I'm not sure what enterprises you're saying that it's not OK for. - www.fs.com/products/96657.html - Part of the functionality is to reprogram SFPs to work with different vendors or for specific wavelengths that your *WDM implementation needs.
@svettnabb
@svettnabb 3 жыл бұрын
@@GarrettSkjelstad - I am unsure if you have worked in enterprise. Let’s say you deploy switches with this hack, with spfs that has been modified to work in switches, with a switch vendor does not support third party spfs, so additionally you have to use an undocumented/unsupported command for it to work. Then later, one or more switches die and you have to get a Cisco technician in to replace equipment because the company is losing money and pay for premium support for these kinds of incidents. It does not matter if hacking the switches to work does the job, the board of directors loves a scapegoat when shit hits the fan. Good luck with that sir, I personally would not risk my career on something like that.

Catalyst 1000 DOES support non-Cisco transceivers. Must be GLC-TE (for rj45) compatible. The issue mentioned in the video was probably caused by GLC-T transceivers, which are not supported.

Just wanted to put my two cents in One Tom the review was well thought out. I appreciate that as I do deal with cisco all the time dual CCNP ( Routing/Switch and Unified Communications ). My only concern with this line up is well Cisco's history of trying to step there toe into SMB and then leave the customer hanging as 3 years later the line up never sees any new products. One example is Catalyst Express line of switches, these ran a IOS lite image but you had to manage via webgui. I see that they are doing this again with the Catalyst 1000 a IOS lite ( not full layer 3 switch ) . It is good as it still IOS 15.x aka legacy so for old timers like me i can configure them in my sleep . Anyway that is really my only concern and if any of your clients want them it would be my only hesitation would be that cisco has a history of not sticking with their smb ios based products very long. Note I dont count the rebranded linksys line aka Cisco Small Business switches cisco if it does not run a variant of IOS either legacy or XE/XR then it not a cisco switch.

I think they've been relying on the Cisco SMB series Linksys junk for too long and this is them finally stepping up to the plate with a proper SMB product so I'm happy. We often want the Cisco seal of quality but can't afford the Catalyst 2000/3000 (now 9000) series equipment but I feel like the old SMB 200/300's were basically not even Cisco.

This is the 1st place I see that anyone has brought up the fact that these devices are totally incompatible with just about every SFP out there. (So thank you for that, It is dead on)! I just got quite a few of these, they are running 15.2(7)E5, I like the switch, but getting any SFP to work is a bear. Out of about 50 SFP's, I only found one that works. It is a Cisco "GLC-SX-MM", however, I am afraid to order more, They might somehow be different and not work. I also want copper Gig SFP's. all of the ones I have are incompatible. I have never heard of much less used an "SFP reprogrammer", but I don't think I am ready to go to the mat, and have my work to shell out $600 and then find it doesn't work. These commands don't help: service-unsupported transceiver !(Doesn't work on the C1000 ) service internal no errdisable detect cause sfp-config-mismatch no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid The manual says (Incorrectly) "The Cisco Catalyst 1000 Series Switches support a wide range of optics."

We spent ages with TAC trying to fix a OSPF bug on our 9K's using VPC and SVI's. In the end we moved the OSPF routing to a Catalyst and it just worked. There's some really nice things about NX-OS but the bugs kill you when you hit one. Meanwhile our 6500's & 4500's using VSS just chug along doing all we require without skipping a beat. It's not just the Nexus platform thats got bugs but the 3850's were absolutely shocking too. The new 9K Catalyst are great but I'm not a fan of VSL on them, I'd rather have proper stacking.

The background checks are in fact because their clients are usually bigger enterprises and they need to make sure you are a part of that company by checking the supplied information, maybe make a call. You actually need a public domain to be able to register. The whole account thing is not only used for support stuff but also these days for their smart licensing on the bigger boxes/software subscriptions. @jyk011609 Жыл бұрын
Yes. It depends on whether you're using them for a live production network or for home/lab use. You don't want to use the 3750Gs in a real production environment because they are End of Life/End of Support since 2018. If u run into issues with the 3750Gs, then you would have no other option but to buy more and have the faulty Switches replaced. But you do get Cisco Support with the C1000s. The other thing to consider regardless of home or production use is vulnerabilities. Since the 3750Gs are EOL/EOS, the outdated software is vulnerable to attacks. But the C1000s will continue receiving updated patches, bug fixes, features and enhancements
@FoX84tac022
@FoX84tac022 Жыл бұрын
@@jyk011609 Fair, but a few caveats - EoL doesn't necessarily mean any 'more vulnerable' as it's not unheard of for even cisco to have outstanding zero-days for extended periods of time (unless there are vulnerabilities with the 3750 you know about that I don't). And secondly, the price of said 3750G's would allow you purchase orders of magnitude more devices. I agree with not running them in production envs, but I can't see a reason not to in a home/lab env. In the end though, today I'd look more towards a 3750X or 3850.

I agree with you that cisco is wonderful to work with and not complicated compared to what it could have been. But if your standard for simple is unifi, then cisco is complicated.

Hey stop ordering from Amazon and help stop wage slavery, sure you would have an account with a wholesaler or non Amazon supplier.

dear Tom, its a lack of knowledge from your part here clearly, you should not do these reviews if you have no knowledge about cisco networking equipment or networking in general. so after 2 min in I already know I can stop watching. Just stick to the free crap and other stuff. Cos this is useless and a waste of time.

I put those words in the beginning so you don't have to watch the rest of the video. Your welcome. 😀

dear Piglet, I enjoyed the video. I’m actually considering using Cisco switches now in some small offices where I would normally use something else like Netgear. (Now that I don’t need to hire someone with Cisco knowledge to configure, maintain, and troubleshoot them!) I appreciate Tom taking the time and effort to make the video. 💯 Cheer up pal! Stop hanging out with Eeyore so much!
