It sounds defiant to me: It's sad and it's full of sorrow, but it's also full of resolve, it's obvioussly about survival and overcoming and pushing through even during hopelessness. Every tragedy just another challenge that was overcome and strengthened you in the end.. That is what I get from it. And the end is when it's all been said and done and it's all reflecting in the honor and nobility of one who has overcome the odds against them and has been hardened and wisened by experience which is regailed to future generations. That is what this song brings out in me.

I don't get why many people think this sounds sad. To me it sounds hauntingly ambient and maybe a bit scary but not sad.
