Scottish comedian/actor Billy Connelly was in the British Army Parachute Regiment (TA/reserves) back in the 60's/70's? and had a similar experience. He said the first time he was in a plane, like the rest of the hard men from Glasgow in his intake, he jumped from it. None had any problems jumping but on their sixth flight the pilot cancelled the jump and returned to land. Billy said all the tough guys were bricking it and holding onto each other at the thought of having to be in a plane when it landed!

In 1975 I was on short final (Cessna 150) to runway 8 at El Paso International when ATC screwed up and cleared a DC9 for takeoff on runway 22. He crossed super close and at my altitude during his climb-out. Knowing what was coming next I was able to warn my wife for the certain incoming vortex from his wing tip. When the vortex hit I couldn't physically hold the yoke so I just followed the pressure and did the only complete aileron roll I have ever done. They never called me, and I never called them. Clean underwear required all around.

I can definitely understand. In 1974 when I was a student pilot, I was solo transiting from our practice area back to NAS Atsugi, Japan. This route took us under the approach to Yokota AB.. All I could ever figure was that I got into the vortex from a C-5A that had passed a few minutes before. I quickly realized that full aileron wasn't stopping the roll so I just rolled with it. Flew back to base and never told anyone about it.

Back in 1990, I was a student pilot flying out of Fulton County Airport (aka Charlie Brown Field) in Atlanta. It had a tower but radar was out of Dobbins Air Force Base. Not long after getting my privates I was flying down the coast from Sav. to St Simons...VFR of course. ATC calls me and says something to the effect of..."just letting you know you have a squadron of 5 A-10's at your altitude on your reverse heading. I acknowledge. Then after thinking it over for about 5 seconds I said...November (____) I think I'll drop down 500ft to 3000....ATC with laughter in his voice..."I think that's a good idea" .... LOL. So seconds later there they are, 5 A-10's about 1/2 mile off my wingtip 500 ft higher heading north. Beautiful sight!

What a great vid. You do have a nice job! The view from your office is pretty spectacular. I was a passenger in the right hand seat of a Cessna 172 over London once, back in the early 1990's with Special VFR clearance which then rapidly went to full IMC. At one point over the Thames, London informed us that we also had a Citation, directly ahead and in our opposite direction. We saw nothing and I remember as a young man with very limited experience flying in those conditions, being very tense. There was zero viz as we were totally in cloud and they kept giving the closing range and asking if we had traffic in sight!! All we had was grey wet perspex!! Eventually the call came to say traffic was clear behind us. We never saw it and I am of course certain the distances were all legal, but for me back then, it was a good education!! Fortunately my pilot was very experienced with a commercial licence. We were heading out to have a maintenance check done the other side of London. By the time we were on the return journey, the weather had cleared and the views across London in a single engine aircraft were spectacular! I've never forgotten it. Safe flying!! 😊👍🏻

Left my left wing after being told they had me in visual sight (legally they had to maintain 3 miles). Same controller asked my distance from Vegas which I had GPS. This man is dangerously casual to be where he is in the take-off roll to be just getting around to securing his seat harness, which also resulted in having to take his eyes off the runway. He didn't learn that in flight school. And good thing his passengers all are wearing parachutes, with that near miss with the Citation.
@KerryDMcCauley

Nope, didn't learn that in flight school. I learned it by doing thousands of takeoffs off my private strip, which is about 250 feet wide at that point.
