Citi prestige is the worst. They recently screwed up my hotel reservation while I was on vacation. I had to wait forever to talk to a person and they did the bare minimum to fix the situation when I finally did. Basically, I paid them $570 to talk to a robot and get ripped off. I can get that for free with any other CC. Will be cancelling this month.

Thanks for doing a vid on this! I come here the unique insight you provide in your content and also because alot of data is beneficial to me. It's good to hear the AF is waived for AD, I believe comments in earlier videos were speculative about it. It's a good card but to me and like you eluded to, it's not quite on par with the likes of the CSR and AMEX Platinum but not a complete avoid. Thanks for sharing with us once again!
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
You bet jcewata! It's a fun card, Citi just needs to bring back the travel benefits if they want it to be taken serious as a travel card. As for waiving the annual fee, I called them for more clarification and they don't "waive" it as a policy... their system automatically "suppresses" it because my SS# flags me in their system as a Military Lending Act beneficiary. I don't think Citi is being deliberately charitable towards active duty, I think it is just a quirk in their banking system coding to comply with the law and they aren't even doing it on purpose. Whatever though, lol. I'll take the free benefits.

Thanks for the unbox and review. I always wondered why Citi didn't appear to have a popular top tier card. It's always Amex this or Chase that despite Citi being one of the big credit card banks (at least to me). Well done!
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Sam! The other top tier card is the US Bank Altitude Reserve. It's a good card. The problem with them is they require you to open a checking account and that checking account has maintenance fees if you don't meet certain requirements. They also love rejecting people with too many recent accounts similar to Chase. I'm taking the next 10 months off from applying and hopefully I can get that card next year.

Hit the nail on the head. Travel credit good. TSA precheck good. Fourth night free good. Cell phone protection good. All things that you can easily justify the cost of card. @JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bucky, yes, the $250 would apply toward the booking of the room and you would still get the 4th night free. How this actually works is you pay for the 4 nights upfront, you are then refunded in a statement credit a couple weeks 1/4 the cost of the 4 consecutive night booking.

I’m looking toward ultimately getting the double cash card; maybe, (per your recommendation on a separate video comment I made). I saw a comment on one of your videos to get this card for the sign up bonus then “downgrade” to double cash. Does downgrade consist of having your credit ran again as you apply for a new card. Also, on a separate note, when you apply for a credit card are they hard or soft inquiries? Does an inquiry appear on your credit report every time you apply for a card? I’ve heard many different opinions. I wanted to reach out for your insight. I appreciate the videos brother. Keep up the good work!
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Nick! Nope, downgrades (product changes within a family of cards) does not cause another hard inquiry or have any impact on your credit. People recommend getting the Citi Premier for it's $500 SUB and then downgrade it after a year to the DoubleCash. Some banks (like Chase and Citi) always trigger a hard inquiry when you get a new card. But some banks (like AmEx) will only give you a hard inquiry for the first card and then every card after that for them is only a soft inquiry and doesn't show up on your credit score. Cheers!

I have this card and the 5x on restaurants is pretty crazy to have. I think Jake should also highlight the value of the cell protect as a value in the effective annual fee as well as any world elite mastercard perks. I use lyft 5 times a month and I get a 10 credit from lyft which I Value as good as cash. I agree this is a compliment to a card that has some protection and therefore never use it to book my flights.
@JakeBroe

For sure Jake! The cell phone protection is amazing and the multipliers are still good. I meant to argue in the video that "worst case" this is a solid hotel keeper card that can cancel out the annual fee cost if you can use the 4th night benefit. Everything else just makes the card better.

I am. But my phone calls about it with Citi have been bizarre. Their official policy is that they do not waive the fee for active duty servicemembers. If you call them and ask, they say they do not do it and it is not their policy. I got transferred through several operators and through several departments to figure out "why am I not being charged the annual fee then" and finally was told by someone it is a constraint of their computer system. The annual fee is suppressed automatically to comply with MLA law for active duty... but Citi has no policy of waiving the fee. When I got the card in 2015 it was the best premium card bar none. Priority Pass. $450 annual fee with a $250 airline credit good for any airline purchase, including flights. Thank you points worth 1.6 cent per point for American airline bookings and 1.33 cent per point for all other airline bookings. Unlimited fourth night free reservations through the concierge, which allowed you to receive the same rate as booking with the hotel directly and status benefits. Three free rounds of golf per year. Admirals lounge access when flying American. Travel insurance as good as the CSR travel insurance with an unheard of three hour trip delay coverage. It has been one devaluation after another since then. All travel insurance gone. Golf and Admirals lounge access gone. Thank you points now only worth 1 cent per point for airline or hotel bookings. 4th night free reservations now limited to two reservations per year and must be made through the thank you portal. Higher annual fee of $495. This card is not worth the annual fee IMO.

For that price it should be a solid metal ! For annual fee that price
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Albert! It is solid metal. It weighs the same as the AmEx Platinum. It just has this mat finish that makes it look not metal for some reason.

If you could pick one between CSR, Platinum & Citi Prestige for "free" (AD Military) then down grade after a year or two which would you get? Spend a lot on food and will be doing 1-2 trips this year/next year. Other current cards are Freedom Unlimited & propel. Love the channel and thanks for what you do.
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Devon! No contest it would be the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Great sign up bonus worth $750 in their travel portal, you will get $300 a year in free travel credits and $60 a year in doordash credits. After you get out you can downgrade it to a no annual fee Freedom card, which is a revolving 5% cash back category card.

You have a very good credit score to get an interest rate that high. That was some crap. They should have given you between 15.99-17.99%

In my opinion the best thing you can do now is freeze some credit cards and just use debit,because you need to keep real life track of your spending especially if you're not working and perhaps you don't even know if you're going to have a job with this is all over .

Wrong channel buddy... Also he's in the military, job security is not as big of a concern. Furthermore, Jake has done an outstanding amount of research when applying for these cards and has done us a great service for sharing with us. Definitely an underdog when it comes to this topic. He keeps track of his everyday spending, credit cards are only so bad for a person with the wrong mentality. I get what you mean though, it's tempting to overspend.
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Spartan! And yes, Junjor, my job and my income is very secure in the military and I really do not spend that much money to being with (I'm a single guy trapped in a small town in North Dakota). But you are correct, for anyone that might lose their job, I do not advise they go in to credit card debt to pay their bills and maintain their standard of living. It's tempting, but ideally an emergency fund was saved and some unnecessary spending (trips or eating out maybe) can be cancelled until a new job can be secured.
