I would recommend that the trees be cleared away from the walls actually. It would be rare to have dense growth right up to a village like that. And especially if it is walled. The Palisade takes a tremendous amount of timber and that alone would clear a lot of the wood around the villages. But on top of that, the reason for building a palisade wall is for defense, and having the forest grow right up to it negates that defense. An opposing tribe could use the cover of the forest to go right up to the village undetected. And if it is primarily to keep out wild animals, many dangerous animals can climb trees. Mountain lions and jaguars both climb trees and pounce down on unsuspecting prey, so tree's right up to the wall would enable such animals to attack the villagers. It takes a lot of work to clear even a small amount of trees, but there are many reasons a tribe would put in the effort to clear an area around the village.

This is a fascinating aspect I never considered! Truthfully I should have done more research on native peoples and how they constructed their settlements. I did try to find some diagrams and whatnot but it was difficult to find sources (with pictures at least), especially on settlements in the Southern USA. So I sort of winged it based on what artwork I could find describing native settlements. I wish you had stopped by earlier in the series, I would've absolutely made these adjustments, but unfortunately where we are in the series now, we're about to enter the industrial age. I'd love to keep hearing feedback from you in future though!

@TheKumuCortwade definitely planning on catching up on this as I can. I am not an expert on pre-columbian settlement patterns, but I have studied defensive structures through history. In particular, Middle East and Greek antiquity, and Medieval Europe. Now that archeologists have discovered mesolithic forts in Siberia, I am studying everything about this that I can too.

It's a very interesting start for the series.the games mechanics make it hard to deal with tribes, but it will be nice to see how you deal with it and expand it with time 😊

Looks like this will be a fun series. Have you checked out donoteat01's Franklin series? That series is about the colonization and development of the East Coast, with Pennsylvania as the inspiration for the Colony/city of Franklin. Each of his episodes take you through the region over time, with the 1st episode not unlike this one starting just before the Europeans arrived, then going into the first colony, then to the Revolutionary war and onwards. He never finished the series unfortunately, but it is very good.

As a matter of fact, this series was heavily inspired by Franklin! Donoteat was the creator of both the palisade walls and the wigwam assets which enabled me to do these early settlements, and I frequently rewatch his episodes to verify some of the stuff I've said in this series. I really hope you stick around, I'm proud of how this series is going!

This seems really interesting? If the region is based climatically on Louisiana and the indigenous peoples are based on on Louisiana are the colonizers going to be a French analogue?

I can't spoil it! But there are analogues for most European states, even minor ones!
