San Antonio has tried repeatedly to get an NFL franchise. They built a dome under the “if you build it they will come” theory - didn’t work. The Saints relocated there during COVID and they tried to get them to stay - didn’t work. Red McCombs (very wealthy San Antonian) bought the Minnesota Vikings to lay the groundwork for a team in his hometown - didn’t work. I live in San Antonio and it’s weird - it’s a sports town. They support the Spurs, they host march madness tournament rounds, UTSA football and bowl games are popular. I think the league is concerned about dilution. Both the Cowboys and Texans sell a lot of merchandise here…

I too live in San Antonio. Its been a long and painful road this far getting to this point. In my opinion its our poor city planning and leadership that has cost our city an NFL team. . Not investing money decades ago into our local universities, our airport, our local businesses, and our infrastructure has caught up with us. Businesses like AT&T left SA for Dallas, young people left for better jobs and education. . However, the tide has shifted in the last decade. . UTSA and UT health are merging. Our airport is about to undergo a $2.5B renovation, multiple manufacturing and tech jobs are growing within the city. . Lastly there's discussion about PROJECT MARVEL. The construction of a new entertainment district downtown complete with a new SPURS NBA arena. . Rumor is those plans include major upgrades for the Alamodome. I pray the Alamodome does NOT get renovated. Instead SA should save money (3-5 Billion) and have the plan in place for when the next team relocation or expansion occurs. Then once a deal is made, construction begins

Oklahoma City would actually make a great NFL city in my opinion. Even with the Oklahoma Sooners somewhat relegating OKC to "de-facto college town status" - the main campus is roughly 20 miles from the city proper - I believe that would only help grow the team's fanbase. The key is to hit the ground running in fielding a competitive team, much like the Thunder did when they came to town. Bonus points if they can sign a few ex-Sooners, or even ex-OK State Cowboys as their fanbase is substantial in their own right.

St Lo has issues with the city not wanting to get sucked into paying for another stadium. They've had two teams abandon them and screw them over and they don't seem eager to test those waters again. But ya know never known. Austin is a no go. The University of Texas football team has one of the largest fanbases in the state and their stadium is literally in downtown Austin (as is the rest of the campus). San Antonio is a better choice since it only has an NBA franchise and no college teams with enormous fanbases. It's also growing almost as fast as Austin and is only a couple of hours drive away. San Diego absolutely should get a team. It's far too large of a city not to have and NFL team, it's a favored location for hosting Super Bowls because of the warm weather in the winter and the former Charger fanbase was a good one that was loyal to a team that wasn't all that good for most of it's time in the city. Additionally the NFL has shown a pattern of getting teams back into markets that have been deserted by previous owners. OK.... well maybe... However that has always been primarily college football focused and would have some of the same issues that Austin does. And outside of the OK City and Tulsa the state is pretty empty. It's also not terribly far away from where the Kansas City Chiefs play.

Expansion? Really, doesn't the NFL already have perennial cellar-dwellers living solely off TV rights? Is there really a need for a further dilution of talent? How many more teams are required to keep balance in the divisions? 4? 8?
@ashleighelizabeth5916
@ashleighelizabeth5916 Ай бұрын
They usually add them 2 at a time. For years and years there were divisions that only had 4 teams while other divisions had 5 teams. The standard practice is to add one AFC and one NFC team at a time and they usually (but not always) stick them in the division that makes the most sense geographically. What's been the pattern is to add teams in pairs every 5-7 years until there are enough to form a new division and then reorganize the entire structure of divisions (and sometimes conferences too). In the 60s there was only an East and West division for the NFL and the AFL. Then they added a Central division for both conferences in the 70s. Then in the early 2000s they went to the now current system with an East West North and South division. As to why they want to add more teams obviously so they can make more money. When they hit a certain number of additional teams they will reorganize the playoffs to add more playoff games as well which makes even more money. So far as diluting talent level goes. Well there are 128 FCS teams in the country with an even greater number of FBS teams out there. With over 300 teams to potentially farm talent from I don't think they are going to lower the quality of the product too much by adding more teams any time soon.

I can't believe there's folks that still believe St.Louis should or will get another NFL team. SMH. The NFL got exactly what they wanted by moving the Rams back to LA into the new corporate headquarters stadium, increasing the value of the team, meanwhile expanding the fan base of the Chiefs to the whole state of Missouri including the St. Louis metro area. The St.Louis department stores all sell Chiefs apparel and memorabilia while the folks buy and wear it all over town. The local network sports coverage always includes the Chiefs the same way they always did the Rams and the Big Red. Chief signs and logos are displayed everywhere. The city now has the Battlehawks who play at the dome where the Rams played. And the city also settled themselves with a major league soccer team. Built a new stadium for that. Nah, St. Louis has been turned into Chiefs nation, and most of the NFL fan base there have fallen for it.

Louisville is too small of a market that is not growing. Also, a new arena will need to be built. The downtown KFC arena is unfortunately outdated by current standards. But then again, New Orleans and Memphis have teams. Neither one is growing, even lower than Louisville.

I’m a biased Okie but I believe Oklahoma City would work well. The negatives are low state income and proximity to Dallas/KC but past that Oklahoma is a football crazy state. Tulsa and OKC combined metro areas are 2.4 million and less than 1.5 hours apart. They have no problem filling up 2 major college football stadiums each Saturday. The only pro team in the state (OKC Thunder) is known to have the best home crowd fan base in the NBA.

If Oklahoma City were to get an NFL team they would need a dome capable of withstanding strong tornado force winds. It would be a good football fit, provided the metro population is stable enough.

ZERO percent chance San Antonio will ever get a team. It’s a one sport city. And that’s the spurs. Not to mention, people there are Cowboys fans. And they have a VERY small TV market. Austin would be chosen over SA. Also, you obviously have no idea how much power Jerry Jones has. Maybe he’s just one owner, but he is also the owner of the most valuable sports franchise in the world

Any city that would cough up $3 -$5 billion for a new stadium and facilities can snare an NFL team. The sheer greed of the league and it's owners would put a team in Alaska if they could make enough money out of it. Until 10 years ago Las Vegas was a no-no, but they got a team so I'd never say never if enough money was on the table.

San Francisco native 🌉 here. 1:40 "...still root for the Raiders...." No! When Al moved then to LA, my Fandom went bye 👋 bye 👋. Meanwhile, the 49ers arose under the late Bill Walsh. Thus, many ex Oakland fans jumped ship 🚢. Any city in Canada 🇨🇦 is subject not to have an NFL team: the CFL exists.

1) Agree on San Jose, legally San Jose can't in that aspect 2) Albuqurque just sounds like a stupid city to put a team...that's a given. Plus it's a college town 3) I may have to respectfully disagree on Memphis, I think they'd test the waters on an NFL team...and if Roger Goodell wants it, the Titans will change their name to Nashville (And the only reason it failed in the late-90's is because the Liberty Bowl is a dump) 4) Louisville is a college town...I don't think "team loyalties" is a valid reason. A new fresh NFL team in your city would totally change that 5) Ohio isn't a big enough state to house 3 NFL teams...but Columbus is a solid sports city San Antonio needs a better building than the Alamo Dome. Austin is Longhorns country...no NFL team is needed there.

While it won’t happen for the reasons you mentioned, I would immediately jump from the Browns to a Columbus team. I’m a diehard Browns fan, having never missed a game for as long as I can remember, but I’m a Columbus native above all and am proud of it. Plus, the Browns haven’t exactly done enough to keep my fanbase for as long as they have. It’s a very toxic relationship.

I think you greatly underestimate how much pull and influence Jerry Jones has on the league and it's owners. He's pretty much the reason/catalyst that got Stan Kroenke and the Rams back to LA. As long as he's living there won't be teams in Austin or San Antonio.

Surprised Albuquerque was mentioned. As a resident the thought of an NFL team here never really crossed my mind because of the reasons you’ve stated. I could see possibly an NBA team similar to the Thunder. Basketball is the most popular sport amongst young people here and our two D1 schools have had more success in basketball than any other sport. But there are other cities more deserving of one than ABQ.
