That’s what I was hoping for. I don’t think my decision of flat protection will ride on the softness added. I actually prefer a stiffness because I get a more efficient thrust out of my pedaling. Softening is like low tire pressure that makes you do extra work.

I once used Tannus Armour and after a while both the front and rear Armour compressed permanently to about 1/8 of an inch in thickness. I got a flat from a small metal shaving in the front tire and it went right through the Tannus Armour. I tried riding with a front tire flat with the Tannus Armour and stopped because I was concerned about the rim becoming damaged. I no longer use Tannus Armour and use some tire liners with Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB Smart Guard. They are heavy tires and are advertised as being thick enough to not get flats from objects the size of a thumbtack. I road several thousand miles without any flats. If your bike tires are as flat resistant as car tires, that is ideal. Objects like screws and nails that give car tires a flat will also give you bike tires a flat unless you have airless tires or airless tire liners.

Interesting comparison - My personal experience riding in Southern California (Mecca for Goathead thorns) is that Tannus proves worthy. I have used several "liners" and none worked as needed. I've had the Tannus inserts w/tubes for about 6 months now and not 1 flat. I thought it would be interesting to count the thorns I picked up and pulled out, over 50 so far. I'm a believer in the Tannus solution.

On my hub motor on back tire e bike, i fixed flats n put the mr tuffy liner on without taking back tire off, i use rachet strap to raise back end of bike up off ground strapped around a tree branch or beam of roof or whatever you can strap it to People when you go riding on hub motor ebike carry a rachet strap also so you can fix a flat easier if you need to, works good when putting tire back on with tire up in air, also carry bottle of unexpired bottle of green slime or 2 bottles, this saved me a few times fixing flats, best to put green slime in before you go riding, carry extra valve stems, one time green slim messed up my valve stem n couldn't pump up tire- had to put new one in, also carry steal long valve stem remover tool- one time plastic valve stem remover tool on green slime bottle broke n wouldn't take valve stem out, also carry skinny needle noise plyers- one time valve stem got stuck n valve stem remover tool wouldn't remove it Especially on a e bike people, if you got wide tires n a heavy ebike it is hard to roll back home with a flat if you are miles away

UPDATE. I knew I read it somewhere, so I got out my Tannus installation guide and on page 3 under Tips For Installing Tannus Armour it states (It is common for the Amour to compress over time. It still is providing shock absorption and puncture resistance but will perform better when properly maintained. To minimize compression deflate the tires while not use. This allows the Armour compound to rebound to provide ideal performance.) So does that mean when your not riding your bike, your suppose to let the air out of the tires? I'm sorry but that's not happening. I don't know how everyone else feels, but if I would have known that earlier, I would not have purchased the Armours.

I have 2 Juiced Ripcurrent S for the last two years and had the Mr. Tuffy's in both and never had a flat. I switched to Tannus Armour and Maxxis Minion tires. IMO the Tannus inserts causes higher rolling resistance vs the Mr Tuffy's. I now have 2 months on the Tannus and for the first month the tire pressure kept dropping 2-3 psi every week. If you can do a battery range test Full to flat between the Tannus and Mr Tuffy on the same ebike and tires I would like to see those results.

That's what keeps me from getting them. I've heard mixed opinions on the resistance, but I don't see how it's not gonna be a little too squishy and slow for road use. Trails, I'll be on them all day. Absolutely. But for an ebike that spends more time on the road, I think I'd rather stick to double skin tubes. The amount a slightly too low tire slows you down, and drains the battery is substantial enough for me to skip them. Sucks because I like the idea and really want them, but I'll wait until I do up a straight trail ride. I really wish they would get on different composition/hardness options. And I mean it's not like they're super overpriced. But especially the fatties, are a little ridiculous for a little piece of molded foam. You don't really have much choice if you need them, and I wouldn't mind the price if I do end up needing them enough. But I've only got two flats in the past year, and both could have potentially gone right through the t.a. anyway. Big spike of glass, and then metal. Idk. Doubling an old tube or two has kept out the little dumb stuff, so.

I just had a screw enter my back e-bike tire. It went through the tire and Mr. Tuffy liner, but the FlatOut sealant sealed the hole with very little air loss. Double your protection and double your fun. Their is nothing wrong with redundancy and it will keep you from walking your bike many miles, or save you time with an on-the-spot repair job. Who knows what type of weather conditions await you? I did not notice any different ride quality with both of the tire protector products. I love your videos on Rad Bike upgrades. I use Mr Tuffy tire liners and slime tire sealant, they stop everything except nails and screws. I've learned to avoid construction areas because they spill nails all over the streets... 😠 I'm also familiar with the more comfortable ride when I was using Schwalbe Marathon tires which had a thick rubber compound. But that was on thin tires on a hybrid bike. With fat tires you get a similar effect so the ride isn't so harsh that I would favor the Tannus armor over what I use currently.

Was getting crazy flats on the rear of my Ariel Rider X-Class which is a 20x4.0 size. Installed a Mr. Tuffy and have yet to get a flat in over 1,000 miles mostly off-road. My original rear tire had gotten somewhat large holes ripped in it and the tire liner started to become the tire lol. The tire never went flat, even with the liner showing through! I found the install to be not as easy as I thought. I wish the Mr. Tuffy could stick to the inside of the tire with some mild adhesive. It seemed like the liner might slide to one side or the other if you're not careful.

There’s a trick to inserting liners - insert an aired up tube to hold the liner in place, and go around the rim about 30 degrees at a time, tucking in the liner a bit at a time, then checking that it’s centered before popping it on the rim…

*Want a really smooth ride? Take some baby powder (or foot powder) and put about 1/4 cup over the tire as well as inside the tire casing, dumping some in and turning the tire in your hand so the Baby Powder (talic) evenly distributes. This will make for a very supple ride as you prevent the tire from sticking to the tire casing inside which also increases chafing and hence tube wear and seam leaks). I have been a UBI Pro Mechanic and used this for bikes since the early 90's Even for ebikes too. (My first was an "ebike" but Ebike brand from 1999) For my spare tube I keep one in a ziplock bag with the talic in coating everything nice. Trust me it really makes a huge difference!*

My observation on the Mr Tuffy liners. Yes, they do reduce the goats head thorn punctures. If you get a tuff thorn and it breaks off and the pointy part stays in the tire after more riding the thorn WILL get thru the tube. Yes the rolling resistance is less, however the ride over gravel/sidewalk cracks is much rougher.

@@chaguito69 you can do both, but if you're on a budget mr. Tuffy is the way to go. I have a specialized fatboy & have mr. Tuffy on both front & back. Easy to install & it does the job on the base of the wheels. If you're an aggressive rider & go thru bushes, you might need the extra sidewall protection & Tannus would be your best bet🤔

I added the tannus armour to my diy ebike, a 2019 Montague Paratrooper and a Bafang Mid Drive. It was hard getting the tube and tannus on the 1.95" tires I have on the bike. My next build, hoping to be my reward when the fed finally approves my disability I want a fat tire recumbent electric mountain bike! i tried a ride at the beach and it was a nogo. I am running 20lbs of pressure in the innertubes I do like the softer ride feel.

Just installed my tannus liner on my rear for my himiway. I popped it right at the beginning of winter, a little thorn did it in. But I haven't done the front yet, but was gonna just start with the rear. Giving her a charge now, and am excited to give it a feel. I saw a video that says you can just do it on one tire and it'll be fine. Have you rode with only 1 liner in?

By the way a have the tannus the other ones can cause punture between the inner tube and the liner if the psi is low and ride it like that

I use an old tire inside the new. Say you have a 26 x 2.125 you use a 26 x 1.95 but trim the wire bead off the old tire first. stuff the inner tube into the smaller tire then put the smaller tire in the bigger one. I use it for my city riding and has effectively stopped flats for now.

I am looking at those same two liners for my new ebike, a fat 20 tire bike. I'm fat so I needed a fat tire one. Anyway, 5 years ago I built a 29" motorized bicycle. It came with cheapo tires on it. Riding the neighborhood I had 3 flats in the first couple months. Always the back tire. I put on some Continental bike tires, 29 X 2.25s, and Tuffy liners. No more flats. Flat tires ruin the whole concept of bicycling for older riders like me. I can't be walking the bike home several miles. The last time I hid it in some bushes, walked home, got the car and came back. Dollar for dollar, I think the Tuffys make more cents. An object longer than the foam is thick will flatten a foam lined tire. The Tuffy liners are actually tough. Liked your vid.. Try not to talk too much, talky videos get on my nerves.

Okay, the Tannus prevents a puncture but now you have a foreign object embedded in your tire that you are unaware of. Sooner or later it is compressed through the Tannus to the tube. And you don't mention how much of a problem it is to fix a tire with the Tannus already installed.

Changing out the back tire is not as hard as you think but I would certainly rather do it in my garage than on the side of the road
@Skupperful
@Skupperful 2 жыл бұрын
@@CitizenCycle925 I've recently bought a R&M Load 60 cargo e-bike and I've tried changing the back tyre in my garage just to find out how easy/difficult it is. I found that it's pretty impossible without some means of suspending the back of the bike above the ground (which is doable in the garage). The bike is too heavy to get upside-down. With it the right way up, you can't hold the back up with one hand (because it's too heavy) and take the wheel off the chain with the other (too fiddley). I've seen a Propel video where he looks at ways at suspending it from a tree branch, but who knows if there'll be a handy tree with a low limb where you get the puncture? I think there's no realistic option in the event of a roadside flat in the back tyre other than to walk the bike home, so I plan to invest in the Tannus Armour before that happens. Thanks for this useful video.

If Schwalbe would make fat tires with their patented puncture resistant lining we wouldn't need liners or foam inserts. I loved my RadRover but the flats were killing me. Never could get the Mr. Tuffy Liners to sit right so instead I cut open the tube I was replacing along the inside circumference and then wrapped it over the new tube thus creating an extra layer of rubber. That plus the addition of Slime worked well. If I did get a puncture that made it through both layers, the Slime slowed things down enough so I could make it home.

This review was more about Mr. Tuffy tire liners not being as good as that other brand from his opinion. Either one is good, you will not get a tread flat, side wall punctures are rare but if that is a concern for you, then pay the extra cash. If you can afford a multi thousand dollar e bike then get the higher end tire liners. Mr. Tuffy is still a good investment. The tannus armor cost $79.99 for 26x1.95-2.25 Or $18 for Mr. Tuffy and tuffy liner won't loosing your spokes, is reusable and biodegradable.
