I find your information about the judicious use of antibiotics interesting. We hear a lot these days about infections that resistant to antibiotics that we have depended on to be life savers for many years. I find that a tad scary!

Just a question how obesity can be reduced preoperatively? I mean shall weight reduction be considered if a surgery is in a later long period ? Cause the other risk factors can be managed in a 2 to 3 weeks ,which is suitable for must surgeries
Guidelines for hair removal dont seem to be used - it is dr preference but if guidelines and research like cochrane review shows decrease infection by not removing hair then why do we still do it even though they clip hair now instead of shave no one seems to clip it in the correct way and still causes between five and 35% of abrasions skin injuries, micro injuries cuts nicks and erythema then they pat the hair off say the back of the neck for spine surgery and the tape if it is not a steal package has been shown to Carrie anywhere from 5 to 10 different types of bacteria so now you have a braised area you’ve disturbed the follicle you’ve possibly cut or caused and now you use tape on the back of the neck that has bacteria on it stop removing unless it’s just at the surgical site maybe a quarter inch of hair they do hairspray craniotomies they should not be removing hair on the rest of the body

Thanks for adding all of the info, I almost never clip unless it’s going g to be difficult to sew the wound without getting hair in it, if I do I clip it and try to be careful not to cause skin injury, usually this is for pilonidal disease. But you’re exactly right, less is better.

How do we get surgeons to change? I Am particularly interested in cervical spine surgery where they many times clip from to ear to ear and to the occiput it is not only adding a much larger area for infection, but also for patients and recovery the psychological part and the mental anguish of looking freakish for quite a long time is ridiculous, especially since it is not evidence based I would also venture to say, which is a little concerning for nurses and surgical assistants that if we are performing a procedure on a patient that is not a guideline even though the Dr. May direct you to do so it could go against your license because you’re not following the guidelines of the CDC NIH JCAOH WHO and even your own facility- how do we make this change?

And I wonder if you know that according to JCAOH and the CDC, etc if you do any procedure on a patient, you must be trained, and then there must be competency and depending on what piece of equipment you use it states that that equipment must be in serviced by the vendor, and everyone needs to be taught by vendor in a training and then there must be compliance I doubt very seriouslyif this is happening, I’m pretty sure it’s appeared appear here. This is what I do which means not using the clippers correctly.
