The difference is extremely obvious. They look so different that I used to walk by natural citrine without even realizing that it WAS citrine. I got so used to seeing heated amethyst as “citrine” that I didn’t have an instinct for identifying it in crystal shops until recently. I used to see natural citrine and pass it off as “a particularly yellowish smokey quartz,” which is kind of what citrine is chemically. The beauty of natural citrine, at least to my eyes, came when I learned to recognize what it was. It has a subtle, almost stoic beauty. Very different from its heated amethyst cousin, which is more of an eccentric beauty.

Honestly as a Geologist the treatment process isn't all that different from how it would occur naturally, its a combination of heat, pressure, radiation and time, of course we would all prefer 'naturally' formed Citrine but i wouldn't be too upset about it i expect your pieces are still lovely!

Thank you for this. I just manifested a piece of natural citrine through dream work and had someone attack me saying it's fake. So many girls like that in my crystal groups who spend all day screaming heat treated instead of doing something productive. Clearly their crystals aren't working for them. Your vid confirmed my piece is definitely natural 🖤

Same happened to me, but I didn't want to say mine was citrine, we were just talking about yellow inclusions in flower ametist that looked yellow/orange. As they mentioned citrine, I tought my yellow/orange ones could be something similar so I showed them. Wish I never did, since everyone got triggered and I was upset at the end. I didn't even know this kind of cristal, and at the end my cristals don't look like citrine, but neither heated ametist to be honest. I still don't know what they are yet, it was a gift so there wasn't any label explaing what it was :/

Commenting late on your video. Thank you for this. Educational and objective. As layman “user” with love of crystals to sync with human lives and emotions, I can somewhat understand many crystal healers and seller of stones saying man made HTA as “citrines”. Natural citrine is getting rarer and most exports out of countries like Brazil are HTAs. So large stocks of HTA citrines are carried by many shops as “citrines”. I am ok but am not happy when the sellers do not have full disclosure or honesty about whether it is natural or HTAs to the unsuspecting novice buyer. From the testimonies of my circle who has no vested interest in crystal trade, IMHO, it is just not correct to say HTA is no different from natural citrine. The process to get there is so different. Natural citrines are created by millions or hundreds of thousand of years under slow high pressure and heat in earth’s crust. HTAs are created out of amethyst from super strong fire or oven heat at commercial processing speed. The amethyst existed as an amethyst in time and history for a reason. The application of environment on the crystal is different. For sure, HTAs are crystal and continue to have energy and frequency. One cannot simply claim HTAs are identical to natural citrines. Besides cosmetic visual of naturals and HTA as being different, many crystal healers and personal lives will tell you they feel a difference in energy level and impact. If a HTA still helps someone or one loves the physical form and color and wants one, of course it is more than fine. But they are not the same.

You’ll have a higher chance of getting natural citrine at an actual crystal and mineral shop. Online shopping is always a bigger gamble. If you can’t see it with your own eyes, you never know what you’ll end up with. The shop where I got mine, the owner prided himself on getting his hands on as much natural citrine as possible, and was very passionate about knowing the difference between them. He has a lot of heat-treated amethyst, and he prices them accordingly (cheap). Then he has his natural citrine specimens in a glass case, priced higher. And he’ll put them next to each other for you and explain the difference. So I was very confident that mine was legit. Of course, finding a shop like that is not easy. I’m fortunate to live near a good shop!

@@Winter74575 It’s called AZ Jewelry Supply Store, and it’s located in Huntington Beach, CA. They have an Etsy page. But other than one small citrine point, I don’t see their super nice specimens listed online. I imagine they might be concerned about shipping them. But hey, if you live close enough to visit them, that would be easiest. Or just contact them and tell them one of their regular customers mentioned they have quality natural citrine on hand, and see if you can convince them to ship something to you. Last I spoke with him, he charges $200/lb for natural citrine. So not the cheapest thing in the world, obviously. But he has a decent amount on hand. I was only there two days ago.

@Jimmy Mcgill Thing is, they were tossed on the hill in the backyard by my brother. It's a very shaded area underneath tall trees, and we are in BC Canada so it's not often hot here. Oh and it wasn't just the crystal that discolored to rust. The whole rock itself that they're on did too. He found a backpack full of white quartz while hiking and didn't know what to do with them, so he tossed them when I was a toddler. Then I found a few like 4 or 5 years later while playing.

I'd like to point out that ALL Citrine is heat treated - the difference is whether the quartz got heated inside of the Earth, or whether it got heated by humans after being mined. It is all still quartz - SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide), but once the quartz gets heated and becomes yellow, it is considered Citrine (which is actually a trade name, not a scientific name), end of discussion. Even "natural citrine" is still heated inside the Earth - it starts out as clear, smoky or amethyst quartz too. Check out GIA for more scientific data and research on this topic.
