Thanks to Craig for bringing this video to us & to Steve for sharing his SM with us. I salute Steve for making an SM part of his life. I own and drive daily a '72 DS21 and enjoy it as much as I think Steve does his SM. Folks here in the US are gobsmacked by the DS - still. Life is too short for ordinary cars.

Thank you Kevin for your kind words, Steve is a true petrolhead and has some amazing cars in his collection, but it was the SM he chose to drive around Europe this summer on a big road trip, it really does make a great tourer. Glad to hear you enjoy your DS! These Citroens really are unique :) Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy my other films

A dream car...I drove DS for over 30 years and find modern cars to be very disappointing in chassis design, ride and comfort...an SM would be perfect for European cruises like you use yours for.

It certainly was a smooth ride!

Great video The big setback for early SMs were timing belt failures at relatively low mileage. In Australia we called SMs the Sports Maserati. I may surprise you that around 20 Right Hand Drive conversions were undertaken in Australia. 3 by talented enthusiasts, around 5 professional conversions when they were new. Around 12 by Peter McLeod who imported cheap used US 4 headlighters for upgrading including glassed in headlight covers. He imported a similar number for upgrading without conversion. Dashboard moulds were made. I drove my first SM at 21 in 1974, one of the original professional RHD conversions. Later I was entrusted with an extended fang through the Southern Highlands and back up to Coast Road to Sydney. This stunning Blue Delta SM was meticulously converted to RHD by Car Club member Bruce Scott-Smith. THE DRIVE OF MY LIFE.

There are many videos on the SM, your's stands out with decent production values and not a bunch of bad info. Just driving the car and enjoying its sound is enough, so well done. I've owned my current SM for decades, so know of what I speak! :-)

Some people are so lucky to have one

I feel very priveliged to have been for a ride in it. This one went on a Swiss roadtrip. Where would you drive yours if you had one?

This review IS better than 2 others I have seen, in that they only showed extatic drivers waxing lyrical , and ONLY showing the DASHBOARD. You have shown the lovely seats, front and rear, too! But, what reviewers often neglect, in my view, is to show the interior of the BOOT. Incidentally, does this gorgeous car have a hatchback - and does the back seat fold down?

One of those SMs converted to RHD by talented Sydney Citroen Car Club member Greg Fienberg, had previously rebuilt my 1978 2CV6 which I imported as second hand parts after a year living in the UK. As the ultimate Citroen enthusiast he went through the parts manual for the GS Birotor Wankel and built the only RHD GS Birotor in the world. The Rotary motor was also intended for the CX. The Rotary motor and SM plus the world fuel crisis of the 1970s plus US 5 mph bumpers bankrupted Citroen for the second time.. bought by Peugeot. In the 1930's after the Traction Avant development Michelin as the main creditor took over. The Traction, 2CV, Ami, Dyane, GS, CX, BX, and Xantia we're all very successful oh so French delights.

It’s so quirky, it’s awesome!!! The interior is great, I just can’t get into the exterior styling! SM certainly stands for Steve McQueen...

I particularly liked the seats - with the ribbing were a styling statement in themselves, and super comfy! I believe he owned one as part of his collection?

The reason why the swivelling high-beams were banned in the US was because over there, regulations at the time required all vehicles to have two or four round sealed-beam headlamps on fixed mounts, with no lens or other covering in front of them. But why was this regulation in place at the time?
@CraigOnCars3 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question! Protection of domestic industry or patents perhaps? Fear of safety issues of modern advancement in lighting?
@CitEnthusiast2 жыл бұрын
The US DOT stopped the lights from coming over as a protectionist practice for domestic automakers. As if the SM/DS headlights by themselves would pull sales from Detroit! But that's the reason, not because of any other since regulations can always be waived by DOT as they see fit. This is documented by the DOT, so not a guess by me. The ruling not not admit the covered, turning, leveling lights was made in 1968 when the third front DS was introduced.

There is no "ice warning" on this car!

The hydropneumatic suspension is the best, finest and most advanced suspension system ever conceived! Mechanical coil or leaf springs are useless, inferior and old fashioned in comparison!

Why are the "side flaps" that shall cover the rear wheels taken away? Doesn´t look good or original! Destroys the elegant, streamlined look of the car!

I would be surprised if the police didn’t pull this chap over and have a word with him about that louvre that prevents him seeing out the back.
@CraigOnCars3 жыл бұрын
I believe the louvre was a factory option from new and it was bought from the manufacturers who still make them to this day. Visibility no worse than many other sportscars etc 😃

@Tim, you can see clearly with the velulux blinds installed. The camera is mounted lower then eye level and at that angle it appears you cannot see behind you.

What happened to the original steering wheel? Incredible! This is a bleedin' modern wheel. It shuld be confiscated from this barbarian. Also, the paint is badly maintained, headlights are foggy ... Anyway. They'ree not as comfortabke as legend would have it. Terribly noisy, jus like the DS. Now have a look at the Rover P6.
