Classic car ownership is not always fun in the sun. They need looking after. Here, I tackle some of the regular grease points on a 2CV with a big grease gun and a wireless microphone that may or may not be actually working.
HubNut Store will reopen on 2nd January. Have a great Christmas!

This reminds me of my 1965 MGB at around 1970. (Yes wire wheels, chrome bumpers and overdrive). The Kingpins were worn so I turned them down in a lathe and made new bushes. The things we used to do when we had no cash! Buying the MGB took it all.

All that talk of nipples and shafts I did wonder if I'd tuned in to the right channel. I remember the rigmorole well. I had a 2CV and a series 3 Landrover at one point, neither had an ashtray or winding windows as standard, both did have a starting handle and neither would get past 80mph, fun times! Merry Christmas!

Wear on the bushes of a king Pin has to far worse than what you have there to bother a proper MOT Tester, what they don't like to see is lift in the assembly, ie- a worn thrust bearing, this is because after you get more than a couple of MM wear the movement then begin to hammer the thrust bearing till it either breaks up or the king pin drives it's way through the top cover on the hub. Engine oil has never been as good and at least the 2CV has a proper oil filter unlike the VW air-cooled units. Hope you have a great Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.
@HubNut
@HubNut 5 жыл бұрын
No, it really is any form of play they don't like. Most younger testers don't really know kingpins at all.
@jbz2079
@jbz2079 5 жыл бұрын
@@HubNut tell me about it, but many buses and coaches still use kingpins, that is why I know about them. Think about it this way, a worn ball joint can fall out. A kingpin can't, no matter how worn it is it can't become detached.
@p24hrsmith
@p24hrsmith 5 жыл бұрын
@@HubNut This is what the MOT guide says about play in Kingpins..... It is not possible to lay down precise king pin/bush wear limits but the following may be helpful as a guide in determining acceptable wear at king pins. With the wheel braked, note the total amount of movement at the wheel rim when the wheel is rocked. For a 50cm wheel this should not exceed 10mm. The maximum for other wheel diameters should be in proportion to this figure. So in old english on a 19 inch wheel it's 0.04 inch so a dial gauge is really needed to test correctly. So could be usefull to arm yourself with this info to show tester who has prob never tested kingpins before a small amount of play is allowed

Quite familiar, that process... My MG Midget has six grease fittings at the front to keep the trunnions and swivel pins happy, and I refresh the grease annually. That said, the latest safety inspection found “worn ball joints” (ha), so it appears that I’ll be replacing the lower trunnion pins shortly, and checking the swivel pin bushes for wear as well. And yes, I love my classic! Warmest Christmas greetings to Mr. and Mrs. Hubnut, with hopes of many new adventures in the coming year!

Since owning a 1932 Morris Minor with well over 20 lubrication points (some as often as 250-miles), I'll never moan about greasing half a dozen points on the 2CV again. The Morris also has cable operated brakes that need constant adjusting, unlike the very modern LHM system fitted to the Deuche.

The MOT man should allow a max of 10mm of play at the wheel rim when rocked by hand before failing it if you have kingpins, that is a hell of a lot of play! MOT standards have been relaxed In recent years, the car has to have serious faults to fail
@HubNut

Yes, but even a slight bit of play tends to get an advisory as a bare minimum. I managed to convince my tester that no kittens were at risk. 2CV kingpins do not fail.

@@HubNut indeed. As I know owning a car with king pins for the last 46 years,they always advise on play even on brand new king pins and bushes! The MOT tester needs an hour of training on classic cars although most are now MOT exempt unless "substantially modified"

Merry Christmas to the HubNut crew. King-pins versus ball joints suspension: I had a 1967 VW beetle with ball joints, the upper right one failed about 200 yards from a VW repair shop. It was most fortuitous. I had them replace all of them as they were about $18.00 each and the labor came to about $100. My '62 SAAB had ball joints with grease nipples and there was an adjuster on the top of the ball joint body. Unlock the peened over washer holding the adjuster cap and rotate to take out any slop before greasing. I miss the quality of older cars.

I considered buying a 2CV brand new in 1985 (C reg) at around £2900ish, I think. I was fed up of having unreliable bangers (Viva HB, Hilman Avenger GT, Austin Princess, Triumph Dolomite) and was looking at getting something new with a warranty and stuff but money was very tight. Another contender was the rear engined Skoda at a similar price. But with on street parking being near a junction and a front garden measuring just 10ft 6in deep I narrowed my sights down to a Mini at about £4K or a Fiat 126 BIS at £2611 on the road. We got the Fiat, with its 650cc air cooled 2cylinder rear mounted engine, top speed of 72mph and a 0-60 time of 33 seconds! I subsequently taught my wife to drive in it with a toddler and baby on board every lesson, at zero cost, she took her test in it and passed first time. I loved that little car and kept it 2 years, but with a growing family we had to get something bigger (a boring second hand Astra estate) but even now I wish I’d still got the 126 for its novelty value and quirkiness.......maybe a model for you to consider in the future.

i remember those same years, but being young a 2cv was not suitable at the time, it was old fashioned and slow, i actually got a skoda, albeit slow still lol. the older BMC stuff had no interest to me either and were all rusty at that time, mini was also just so old fashioned at the time.

You were apologising about the sound levels? You are loads more audible than your friend Richard was on the Dacia carb video. Yes grease guns are traumatic. I've got one like yours that takes cartridges, for my Morris Marina trunnions, and before that Mini and Hornet rear subframe swinging arms, but years ago as a fitter at the mighty Concordia Electric Wire and Cable Company (no longer mighty - or there) I regularly used grease guns filled direct from a tub of grease. Airlocks and spitting and popping with no grease going into the bearing is a regular occurrence with those AND the cartridge types. Confusingly and rather frustratingly, one member on the Morris Marina forum stated that if you get grease coming out of a trunnion, from under the dust cover, I'm forcing it past the seals and popping the seals! I'm not sure if that is true but....too late now!

We forget how little lubricating modern cars need. My dad's repmobile in the mid 1960s was a Ford Consul Classic 315. I found an old service book for the car in a junk shop a few years back, seemed the car needed a lube job every 1500 miles...for him, and the rural distances he drove, that was a morning off every few weeks to get the car into the garage in the next town. Service intervals were also just 6000 miles.

Yes Morris Minor's king pins we ignored at your peril, taking a bend too enthusiastically and the wheel would collapse with a worn pin..so of course BL carried the ancient design into the Marina which also did the same..not possible with a Ford of the Classic era.

Go to South France if you really are interested in a 2cv. They are a bit cheaper in France and of course in the south, they rust less often than in the UK. I live in the Netherlands and they are extremely popular around here and also expensive. I heard that in Serbia they are dirt cheap but I don't know why. I was considering to buy one but I found it too expensive and not practical. They make a terrific amount of driving noise and 100 km/h is really the max otherwise your ears are gonna bleed. Always cold inside these things and not really waterproof. Bought a classic mini instead. Needed complete sills and floorpan restoration but it was cheap, has decent power (1275cc), driving it is extremely funny, gets great gas mileage, and if my daily driver brakes down it a great second car!

Anyway tried greasing the water pump with the new one but couldn't get it off, had to break the nipple. New one had a Metric nozzle. Was going to do a video of running over it, but as I don't like breaking things, gave it to the garage. Also the king pins. This year my steering was very stiff at the start of the year. Plumped grease through until new grease came out. RESULT. Like fitting power steering 😊 Happy Christmas......

Also, with most grease guns you can adjust the sleeve nut on the end to alter the grip tension on the nipple - I used to grease lorry chassis as part of my mechanics apprenticeship and would (by hand) loosen the nut, fit to the nipple and then tighten the nut, grease, then loosen the nut for easy removal. Merry Christmas HubNut peoples. You're lucky you've at least got a garage. I have to service my 2CV outside but of course it's always sunny here in Southern France (NOT!). What is it with grease guns? Grease goes everywhere except where you want it...grrrrr. Look forward to what you've got in store for 2019.

I'm very impressed with the extra mobility that wirelessness has provided. My last car that had grease points was a Chrysler Neon of around 2001 which had grease nipples (or zerks in the USA) on the ball joints and track rod ends they were normally ignored (even by the dealers) and generally failed , perhaps because no one has a grease gun any more.......apart from me and of course you.

Where about in Scotland are you visiting? If you're anywhere near blairgowrie (close to Perth) you're welcome to have a run around in my series three Land Rover. It's slow, noisy, dirty and pretty clapped out but it still goes! I'd offer a shot of my Audi A8 4.2 but one of the timing chains snapped. I'd also offer you a shot of the 407 I bought to use until I fix the Audi but the suspension fell off at 60mph a week after I bought it and is currently being a pig to fix!

Not that far north sadly. Border country, then off to North Yorkshire. No time to play! Maybe another day.

@@HubNut Ahh, oh well. The offer is always open though if you're up this way. I'm away to hit my Peugeot with more hammers and see if I can get the broken driveshaft out of the gearbox. Been at it for a total of about 20 hours, in two blizzards a rain storm and much sub zero weather! Wish me luck. (I'm working on the driveway as Audi is in my garage!) Merry Christmas.

I'l raise you the early Peugeot 404. 4 (or 5...I forget!) x grease nipples on the steering and track rods, 1x on the prop shaft centre bearing (inside torque tube) 1x on water pump bearing and even a little tube to drip a bit of oil onto the clutch release bearing. Later model 404s had some deleted. Shame nobody thought of rust proofing the rest of the car...

An easy job at least! Seem to recall the nipples are easily accessed.

She's a lucky car. Has the aura of a pampered cat at the end. Season's greetings to you and all at Hubnut mansions and thank you for having enriched my 2018. I wish you all the best with your plans for 2019.
