I'm 6 feet tall and I like my seat position quite high and I'm concerned that the central storage running along the centre of the car and the top side forward storage might prove intrusive and potentially be a head strike hazard in any incident or in the latter case also reduce forward vision. How have you found it?

A proper review! Very helpful in helping me decide to buy a Berlingo XL Flair for use as a daily car but also a camper / tourer..One day, companies like Citroen will wake up to a sizeable market segment that wants their vehicle to be a camper, and offer options like a preinstalled leisure battery, extra insulation and a false floor and side panels, ready to be screwed into for custom designed DIY campers.

I had an early first generation 2L HDi and have just completed 70,000 miles in my second generation 2012 XTR (it's done >90k miles in total). These are still the best cars I have ever owned. The only thing I think is a backward step is that the rear seats no longer lift out, which reduces load capacity. I will probably replace my second generation one in a few years - either with a low mileage gen 2 or a used gen 3. Once you get used to them you wonder how you ever got by with the limitations of a normal car...

Thanks for the comment John 👍 great to hear from an owner. We loved the practicality of the Berlingo!
@crpth14 жыл бұрын
"...backward step is that the rear seats no longer lift out..." It should be well understood that "modern" cars as a general rule of thumb DO NOT have removable/lifting/rotating seats. Due to "safety" implementations! I had 1998 Mercedes A class. Front passenger seat could be removed with 1 lever! Next generation bolted in place! Citroen Xsara Picasso battery easily accessible under the driver seat. Seat lifted by 2 levers, very easy system! Later models bolted in place! Battery access became a nightmare... All rear seats were removable! Later Picasso incarnation, bolted and foldable... no longer removable! Renault Espace once had rotating seats, later generations lost it. Earlier vans and van based cars had handle on A pillar to facilitate user ingress. Another detail that you won't find nowadays. But still present on heavy vehicles. That don't have to comply with the same EuroNcap tests! ;-)

@@crpth1 Progress huh! Since posting my comment a year ago Blingy has now done almost 120,000 miles and still not missed a beat. Clutch is getting tired but I've decided I am going to accept spending money on maintenance and will be keeping it until the UK bans diesels or it it rusts away. It's still the best car I have ever had.

I found this review fascinating, not only for the vehicle, but for the cultural perspective as well. Here in Canada, we don't have access to Citroens or Peugeots. If you're a typical van person, you'd end up with a Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna, or a Kia Sedona. I'm an owner of a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew Plus, old technology in some respects, but comfortable. If you want to see the difference in the design mindset, have a look at the KZbin reviews of for example the Grand Caravan Crew Plus or the GT. Thanks for an enjoyable and informative European van review.

Have run an 06 incarnation 1 (1.6Hdi) for nearly 13 years and 150000 miles and the appeal was its van like nature which has never been a problem. It carted filthy kids, mountain bikes and stuff around flawlessly and only ever had (other than regular services) a cambelt, waterpump, 1 injector seal and a battery and starter motor. The Mk2 version was mildly focus group sanitised but they lowered it too much in the ground clearance department for some of the places I go. With the Mk3 version they seem to have lost the plot as it has drifted so far from its roots, got middle aged spread, has far too much trim in the load area and too many gadgets. Result, too bulky, too heavy and too pricey. I'm loathed to replace it but it has had it's day and unfortunately this new one will not be taking it's place. P.S. Good review, watched it all and it proved to me that the new version basically doesn't do anything for me....

That is the problem. We've had French van cars now for what seems like ever. Best things ever. But each iteration gets bigger and more expensive. I wish the dacia dokker was in the UK. It starts at 10k EUR.
@graemepilkington30805 жыл бұрын
@@Benjamin.Jamin. I thought the same, would have quite readily considered the Dokker but as the kids have grown up the bikes can now go on a rack and I'm awaiting the delivery of a 2019 Suzuki Jimny within the next 2 weeks. Yeah its smaller but the Berlingo has had its back seat permanently folded down for the last 4 years but it is arguably 5K cheaper which offsets the extra thirst of the 1.5 petrol. Has no turbo, no dpf, 4WD, loads of ground clearance, different to drive, loads of character and is square with a big door at the back. I predict that this incarnation will not sell as well as the first or second and residual values will be percentage wise worse. Good news in 3/4 years for ex PCH/PCP bargains.

A refreshingly honest, unbiased review of an improved version of an excellent existing model. If I had new car money, I'd be off to do a deal at my local Citroen dealer. Why anyone tries to kid themselves that the SUV option is an intelligent move beggars belief. Ok a more car based MPV might look a bit sassier on the driveway, but if that justifies spending £3k more, well again, more fool them as does so! I feel it is a shame that a really basic version cannot be had in the UK, likewise, the non availability of the triple rear seat is Citroen shooting themselves in the foot imho. Frankly, to get something as useful as the triple rear seat shouldn't have to include a lot of the electronics, and other unnecessary trim bits of the higher spec car. Come on Citroen, do the decent thing! I also have an issue with so many manufacturers insisting that white (the colour of least imagination) is the only no extra cost colour. Not everyone want's to emulate the poor sap, base model BMW and Audi drivers who could have so much more with a different grille badge! Sadly, unless my lottery numbers come up tonight, I'll have to carry on with my rather secondhand C4 Picasso......but hey, that's not a major problem.

Top Gear is a prog about fast cars, designed for the profitable younger market, more gullible and with a greater spend ability for toys, flash, and shiny stuff combined with a desperate desire to be noticed, but in the end we all have to grow up, buy a house and have to move stuff, this is for those "once youngsters". Different market, different audience, as you say a good solid review. The awkward rear door I haven't seen mentioned before, on a commercial version this would be totally impractical, so why does the poor punter get the rubbish version ? Again good review.

Regarding the opening rear window - is Citroen really not offering it as an option for lower spec tiers? Here in Slovakia we specced out our Berlingo with middle tier and optional opening rear window. I've also seen it as an option in both Rifter and Combo price lists here. So I wonder what's going on on the other side of the channel ...

Hi mikosoft, thanks for the comment 👍 In the UK its an optional extra too, would be nice to see this as standard on the high spec models.

Good review, the first gen has been in our family for years (just hit 200.000km) and my father of course is looking at the new version. Still, I am quite amused about the French sense of beauty as I think the XTR version looks a little silly with the garish orange detailing and the odd top roof thingy.

Nice looking tool, it smacks of looking like the new Vauxhall in which case I would prefer that.

Vauxhall is now owned by Citroen/Peugeot so it's just Vauxhalls take on the same basic model.

Why would head up display be odd i had it for year in mpvs it means there is no need to take your eyes from the road and become distracted if anything it make more sence in a family car where safety is most important. One who question your view point as a driver if you think its odd.

Excellent review. Full of good information. I've been looking for a review of the Ford Tourneo Connect, but can't find one. Have you done one? Thanks.

Hi Green Baron! We haven't reviewed the Tourneo Connect yet but we did review the Transit Connect last year: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYWXXmeviq6hnpI. Hope this will help you decide if a Ford MPV will suit you best 👍

PSA needs to offer this as an EV; there seems to be enough space under the floor for a battery pack. Perhaps they could use a similar motor and battery pack as in the eCorsa (100 kW, 50 kWh, 205 mile range).

I read that Toyota's ProAce city is a rebadged Berlingo.
@F1Kamel_19925 жыл бұрын
No it's not, the Toyota ProAce is a rebadged Citroën SpaceTourer
@crpth14 жыл бұрын
The Toyota ProAce, align with Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch. The Citroen Berlingo, align with the Peugeot Partner (Rifter is the passenger version) and Opel/Vauxhall Combo. On the bigger vans the Peugeot Boxer, align with the Fiat Ducato, Citroen Jumper (Relay, in the UK). Or Dodge Promaster in the US market! On another line and much smaller stance. Peugeot 107/108, align with Toyota Aygo and Citroen C1! In almost ALL cases they´re built in the same factories, by the same workers, with the same parts, etc. So take a deep breath before going all ape about French brands, Japanese brands, German brands, UK brands, US brands... You get the picture! LOL 😂

The mistake at 08:27 needs correction. The Eat 6 gearbox was not in the previous versions of the Berlingo or Partner. The ETG6 was the previous robotised manual, as were the EGC6 AND EGS6. The EAT6 and EAT8 are both new, high quality torque converter gearboxes, without the reliability problems associated with the previous generation and the VW DSG boxes.

I like the look of this car from the outside but I think the rifter is nicer on the inside. But both have too much hard plastic.
@paulparoma6 жыл бұрын
On the inside, the materials are pretty horrible: exposed metal, cheap plastic etc. And the whole design of the dashboard is rather crude, even in this updated version. I wonder how it drives, though.
@matt72325 жыл бұрын
Agree, I was eager to buy it and then i went on test drive. After one hour i returned the car. VERY disappointed. Too much plastic and not too good ride quality...

@@matt7232 I had the same experience many years ago with the Xsara Picasso. The car stalled as soon as the salesman started it (pretty embarrassing), and then it could not keep a straight line on the highway. I was also very disappointed by the C6.
@matt72325 жыл бұрын
I see you point - I was also disappointed by Picasso. Citroen cars are generally nice to look at, especially DS versions but for me...it just can not compare quality build to german rivals or the driving quality experience. Although Peugeot made a huge step forward with 3008, especially the interior.
@crpth14 жыл бұрын
I always find kind of funny how ridiculous opinions, based on pretty much nothing, are used to cover an entire range! Let´s forget for a moment the fact that even with so many "faults" it sold MILLIONS worldwide! Maybe the FACT that 2 (53L) fuel tanks put me well across the German border! That from a start point in the most Western point of Europe! FYI That´s in the far West of Portugal, with the Atlantic Ocean as a background image! That in a 2004 Xsara Picasso 1.6HDI, 110hp... While doing that comfortably seating in "captain" chairs, leaning against the arm rests. Part of the full leather interior! All while the cruise control set us out on the road. Did a lot of family vacations like that! Maybe that´s enough to enlighten about the fact, it really can do a straight line on the highway! In fact can do it very well indeed! LOL 😂 BTW Sold it after 4 years of ownership. Got something else, but soon repent my choice. Went back to Citroen to buy another (new) one. Unlucky me they didn't sold it anymore. Among other reasons to not "cannibalize" sales from the, at the time, new C4 Picasso!! Now many years later among the six (6) vehicles I still own! One is precisely a well beaten and basic (no frills) Xsara Picasso 1.6 petrol! By far not the best car in the household for the moment. But reliable and very cheap to maintain. So keep it around. ;-)

Just to point out there is no option in Britain to have automatic transmission with a petrol engine. It has to be diesel if you want auto. Verified by dealer.
