First heard this in a record store in 76. Bought the record and became a fan. Saw then live at the Marble Bar in the Congress Hotel in Baltimore. Myself and a friend were the only ones there who knew their music. We got invited backstage for Heinekens after the show. Quite an evening. Still have Mike Hammers guitar pick.

Knew the first time I heard this on KMET (Los Angeles) that it was a one-of-a-kind band, and crazy talented album. Went down to Tower Records on the Sunset Strip, and bought it immediately! Sadly, it didn't get the massive airplay it takes for a band to get widely known, but I never, ever forgot how talented these guys were, and I try to turn friends on to them, any chance I get, even 40+ some years later. Honestly, I'd call them my all time favorite underplayed band. This LP reminded me of Boston's first LP, which was packed front to back with great songs, as this album is. My personal favorite, 5,000 Years, Don't Know, Can't Tell...

I've always been a fan of complex layered production, such as, All Things Must Pass, Queen, Ambrosia (Somewhere I've never traveled), Genesis, 10 CC, The first Boston album, (until radio wore it out), The Fixx, and this is a great example. I have loved this album since it first came out and arrived at the Progressive Rock station that I worked at in Erie Pa.

I have three of their albums. This one is actually their first and self titled City Boy, released in '76. The two following, released in '77 are "Dinner at the Ritz" and "Young Men Gone West". I love this album, though Dinner at the Ritz is my favourite. The music gets into your head and is very layered and lovely . . . . I forgot about them for years and am now happy to revisit.

Thank you for posting this. I'm looking forward to hearing the entire Oddball Dance - the track posted on YT for 7 years doesn't include the "Anyone for tennis... I'm a loony" verse with farting sounds :) Just scored this and Dinner at the Ritz double CD for $13.55 on Ebay. Psyched. I lived off my badly warped LP since the early 80's.

Effing brilliant. Haven't listened to this for ten years. Originally introduced by my younger brother on a cassette in his car. Great shame such talented guys went for harder rock in their follow ups and faded away. I'm told that they were going to release Hapkido kid as a single but were pipped at the post by that crap Kung fu fighting by Carl Douglas which might have gone to No 1? On such fine lines is the future drawn.
@craiggerrard5117
@craiggerrard5117 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's true, although it's possible. Kung fu Fighting was released in September 1974, way before this album. Hapkido Kid was released as a single and they performed it on Top of the Pops, I think it is on You Tube.

@@grahamharley4895 Thanks for the reply. It's my guess that the reason for their failure in this respect was timing. Their albums came out just as punk was hoovering up all of the media's attention and it was difficult for a group like this to get much air play except on specialist shows. A pity.
