Fantastic to see work beginning on this great ship! I used to dread her being broken up due to the lack of interest by government, while here in the UK. So pleased Australia is now giving her the retirement she deserves,i watch with interest! Thank you.

I remember this as the Carrick, and when I was a child she was moored alongside in Glasgow, and was used as a club for members of the RNVR (I think). Didn't see her for many years then found her on the hard at Irvine in Ayrshire, looking very sad, and crumbly. I am so glad that she has gone home and is gradually being restored.

You have a big job restoring her. Almost to late! These things need to be saved. It would be a duller world without beautiful things like this in it. She will be a real sight when she is finished!

I used to see this ship almost daily when it was laid up on a dry Dock in Irvine. I believe the Scottish maritime museum bought it with the intention of restoring it but the project was too big and they couldn't secure funding. I even got to go on board once as a kid in the late 90s/ early 00s.

Thank Goodness she was saved. She is the oldest Clipper left in the world (there are only two clippers left, the other being the Cutty Sark), and from memory she is the last iron and timber composite hulled sea going ship left in the world. She is an important piece of history.

My father sailed on the Cutty Sark, Archibald Russell, Kirkcudbrightshire and many other fully rigged ships. I had my share at sea singles handed my 50' ketch for five years from Hobart to Cairns each year. Good to see the last old girl brought back to life.

So sad to see the Carrick (City of Adelaide) in this shape, I used to see it reguarly in Glasgow when I was a kid & i even had a birthday meal on board in the early 1980's, I hope to see it restored to its former glory one day.

This ship was a Hospital ship in Southampton at Millbrook Bay, Millbrook point that is a container port now. She was under a different name then, she housed tropical diseases and infections, this was all moved ashore and the ship was got rid off, there is a picture of her on her moorings when she was in Southampton

This ship was on dry land at Irvine in Ayrshire , i knew some of the maritime museum staff as my self and my wife got a look around inside the ship , It was called ''The Carrick'' then and was used as a restaurant in the Broomielaw Glasgow before it sunk at its moorings , it lay there for a lot of years before being raised I think it sunk in 1978, but not sure, The ships bell was in the Irvine Maritime Museum I hope it went with the ship

My uncle was a marine surveyor in Glasgow during the time she was a floating restaurant. Apparently, she had 2 large pumps below deck running 24 hours a day, constantly bailing out water to keep her afloat. I'd assume one of them failed, resulting in her sinking. Although it was never confirmed.

It's great their restoring her she will look beautiful 😍 after only 2 off her kind left the world the originals, but it depressing me that the state government and the lazy port Adelaide city council have neglected the FAILY and left her to rot , she only needed 2million dollars to fix her hull thicken it up , she was always booked out on trips but the council asleep at the wheel again and this was years ago so what's their excuse now the lazy barstads

I have been following the fortunes of this ship since the 1960s, and I am glad she is in South Australia. It is too bad they did not get her before she was allowed to sink at her moorings. However, I think to call her a "clipper" may be a bit of an exaggeration. Her lines are pretty full.

The few pictures in the beginning this ship is rigged as a bark, not as a full rigged ship as the clippers were. As a bark I doubt very much that she had lee sails on the fore and main mast. So calling her a clipper is an exaggeration. BUT having said that quite a few full rigged ships, both 3 and 4 masters, were re-rigged as barks in their later years. The gaff rig on the mizzen is much cheaper and usually2 to 3 men could be shortened from the crew list. It could of course very well be that this ship is built as a full rigged clipper ship and can be justified with that designation

Says on the website that its the oldest clipper ship in the world. Its not. The Star Of India in San Diego was built in 1861, and is still seaworthy. Of course, she was built entirely of iron. As opposed to Adelaide, that had iron framing only.

In 1948, she was decommissioned and donated to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Club, and towed into central Glasgow for use as the club's headquarters and remained on the River Clyde until 1989 .. Maybe that is when the lamp came into use. ?
