When Jack Palance walked on stage to accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, he dropped down and did one handed pushups on stage. He was in his 70s.

Hes main roles Batman 1989 and Tango & Cash 1989 , thats very cheesy 80s action and Jack Palance is chewing the scenes. He did lot B movies, like It can be done Amigo 1972 , with Bud Spencer and Sergio Leone as 2nd unit director, its fun because they used few old Sergio Leone movie set , that still were on place. Bud Spencer that was big guy, but only one inch taller that Jack. He belonged to the same group of Pennsylvania Ukrainians that the Deer hunter was about , but served in 1942.44.

That was my first thought. Billy Crystal's spent the rest of the night riffing on Palance’s subsequent feats of strength through the rest of the Oscars and it was hilarious. “Jack has just bungee-jumped off the Hollywood sign.” One of the best Oscars.

Curly is played by legendary character actor Jack Palance, who acted in 125 movies, usually playing the villain (most famously in "Shane"), famously dying violent deaths in 37 of them. He's satirizing himself here by dying of natural causes. Several funny websites have compiled lists of his on-screen deaths.

For the actual filming of the calf coming out, it was a puppet. When the calf was stumbling around, it was a real calf right after birth and Billy Crystal actually helped birth it. They used 6 calves all in all to film it. Afterwards, Billy Crystal paid to ensure the calves had a space on a farm

As much as Eastwood is also a westerns icon, I could not see him pulling this off with the same level of heart. He's shown levity in some of his roles, but.. I just don't think it would have been the same. Jack Palance WAS Curly. He had the look, the gravitas, the cache, the history, but also the heart, the twinkle in the eye, the tender side and the wink to the audience. He was perfect.

Least known bit of trivia about this movie: The ranch owner is an actor named Noble Willingham, with his very distinctive voice. He is also in The Last Picture Show from 1971 as the guy who holds the first down markers on the sidelines at football games. The movie showing at the time, the titular picture show in the local theater, is Red River - the movie containing the so-called "YEE-HAW" scene which is the scene that's on screen while the characters are in that theater. Mind Blown!!

Highly doubt he actually helped deliver the calf. The calf would have to be an embryo transplant which was rare at that time. Norman is clearly a purebred Jersey, which is a dairy breed, known for their friendly, sweet personalities. (I happen to raise and milk Jerseys) And the "mother" is definitely a beef breed cow.

Bob Costas had a talk show where he'd have a full half-hour conversation with a single person. When he had Palance on the first thing Palance said was "I thought this was gonna be a five minute interview." Costas said it was a ridiculously hard interview but as soon as the cameras were off Palance put an arm around him and said, "Hey, let me tell you a great story about Marilyn Monroe!" He was a weirdly funny guy.

Me and my cousin saw this in the theater..we were 17. We couldn't stop laughing right from the animated intro. One of the best comedies ever. Extra great if you like westerns too. Billy Crystal was huge back then. A headlining stand-up. He had one awesome season on SNL to help resurrect the show along with Martin Short and Christopher Guest. Afterwards, he, Whoopie Goldberg and Robin Williams organized and headlined the Comic Relief tours. Then one hit movie after another, hosting the Oscars like 9 times...

I saw this in the theater. It was a "friend date" with the sister of my dad's best friend's daughter-in-law who was from out of town and visiting for a week and I got tapped to entertain her for an afternoon when Dave and his wife had an appointment. I remember it was funny enough that we kept looking at each other to share a laugh, but once it was over I just took her back to "Uncle Clay's" house and dropped her off. I don't actually remember the plot other than a couple of flashes -- "rum raisin!" and the stampede from the coffee grinder are it, really. But I do recall it being a fun afternoon with a pretty girl who I've not seen since.

He didn't throw the rope forward. That's the point. He released it at the wrong time. And the key in the calf birth scene is Curly calling Mitch "Cowboy." The death of the cow is there to reinforce the seriousness of the situation and how powerful it is that Curly affirms his behavior/manhood in a critical moment.

Billy Crystal describes this as a coming of middle age and wrote the movie's premise on a notepad, including Jack Palance

Thanks for this reaction! I love this movie and saw it in the theater. If no one else has mentioned this, Yeardley Smith (Nancy) and Helen Slater (Bonnie) were in the incredible movie, The Legend of Billie Jean, together and you would absolutely LOVE it. Also, fun little fact, Phill Lewis (the younger Dr. Jessup) has a small part in Buffy the Vampire Slayer...and we went to elementary school together.

One of Jack's last roles was on Crusade (a Babylon 5 spinoff) He did one of his famous Ripley's style sign offs.

I worked at a theater when this first came out, and nobody thought anything of it. But it just gained momentum by word of mouth and it was a packed house on the weekends every night. As employees we got to see it for free and loved it! My friends and I will still steal quotes from the movie. I mean, you can't eat bacon at every meal!

Bruno Kirby and Daniel Stern remind me so much of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern in Home Alone.

I decided if they ever do a live action Disney Hercules movie, you should play Meg. You have the perfect voice for her.

8:43 - Oh my gosh. That's Yeardley Smith. The lady who does the voice of Lisa Simpson! I've watched this movie a couple times. Just noticed her. When I was growing up, Jack Palance was known for being the host of a TV series based on the books called Ripley's Believe It or Not. To me, it was a change of pace to see him in this movie. I didn't know about his extensive movie career.

I'm glad you enjoyed this, Shan, it's always been a favorite movie of mine. And Billy Crystal is always a riot lol (Miracle Max in The Princess Bride, etc.). I was in high school around the time it came out so I got the VCR jokes right away. City Slickers II isn't as good as the first movie, but it's still fun in its own way and is worth a watch. Another excellent cattle drive film you should definitely check out is Lonesome Dove. It's actually a 4-part miniseries but trust me, it's definitely worth investing the time to watch. It won a ton of Emmy awards and is widely regarded by both fans and critics as one of the greatest westerns ever made, if not THE greatest. Seriously, it's THAT good. I hope you'll check it out soon! :)

This movie reminds me of a John Wayne movie The Cowboys. He has to use a bunch of green schoolboys to get the herd to market. Epic!
