I just wanted to say thank you all for the tips. I’ve done several jobs with it since then and got it dialed in. I’ll have a few more new videos of it coming soon so be sure to follow the channel by hitting the subscribe button. It really does help the channel out. See ya on the next job! 😊

You're brave showing everybody your first time with the flail mower. I've never used one but I've seen a lot of videos about them and I think they do leave a much better cut than a bush off. However, I did not understand why the grass was staying bunched up in your machine. As you deduce that was probably the problem and why your belts burn up. I am not familiar with that brand of flail mower but it does not, or at least in this case, did not cut well at all. But everything gets better with practice. Hope your next venture goes well. As this is the first video of yours I have seen, I will search for some additional ones. Thank you for the content. Kim

I have another video in the works that shows what that mower/mulcher can do but I need to get part 2 of this job done first 😂. Thanks for the comment. I just wanted to show what I do, the up and downs, how do my line of work, and in the most rawest forms I can provide.

I run a betstco 135. You are doing great just remember to take it slow. Be quick on the PTO switch once the bets start to smoke shut it down and back out. I have done the same thing. Also you will notice you broke a hammer connecting bolt when you feel a sudden vibration. Stop immediately and look for the hammer. Its usually with in 10feet behind the flail mower. At $14 a hammer you want to find it LOL. They work great but you have to take it slow. I also removed the scraper bar on my rear roller. It cloggs and doesn't let the material fall out the back like its supposed to.

This brand looks to be pretty bad I must say (not the first video I've seen with this Betstco whatever brand, where it did work badly). I have the same design from KDL Agri, most likely the very same manufacturing line with different paint, but mine has for the EFGC-125.... 3 belts. Also the belt guard has pins, which prevents it from touching the belts.

It has its flaws but it actually has performed well since this video was published. There are a few more videos I did with this attachment

RPM's seem to low . Also you have it adjusted to low and at a downward angle. Basically plowing with it.

Never mow in reverse with a flail mower. Cut in multiple passes starting with the mower high and then bringing it down. Don't drag the dirt in rough ground. Watch out for the belt guard rotating and then rubbing the belt. I have the exact model but 42 inch width. Once I learned the do's and don't I've had no issues with the mower.

@kdegraa turn off the pto when reversing and let the blades stop. That way the blades don't bind up on long, stringy material. It's from my flail mower instructions

adjust your skids higher. go slowly. maintain a high speed on flail. adjust angle of attack so mower is level with ground. learning curve. carry spare belts. 😀

That company needs to send out better setup instructions. I had a set of belts burn up on mine too and had to learn to set the roller to the highest position. And in tall vegetation, use the hydraulics to cut high the first pass, then go back over a second time.

From my experience (I have 55 acres deep in the piney woods of Texas) the Bestco flail mowers tend to ship with the belts not tight enough from the factory and I would venture to say you hadn’t tightened them when this occurred. Also (I think two others pointed out this as well) the rear roller should be the only thing on the ground when in use, DO NOT CUT IN REVERSE, and adjust the skids as low (extended out from the mower) as low as they will go. This mower cuts thick underbrush, saplings, and grasses as high as 7’-8’ tall without an issue. However I haven’t found one yet to chew up old engine parts. It is a learning curve and it’s far easier than what I used 50 years ago (a hand swinging sickle). Good luck from a first time viewer, I’ll be sure to check out your other newer videos too just to see how things turned out. PS: keep at least two spare hammers and a set of belts with you along with spare pins and a few bolts for the hammers. Adjustable wrenches don’t cut it keep the right size wrenches too. I have actually broken a hammer (you will notice an immediate vibration when that happens) on what turned out to be a piece of petrified wood, not sure how it got where it was but rocks are also common to appear from thin air it seems. One other thing I keep handy when on the back side of my place is a “snake charmer”, I hate snakes (cottonmouth’s, copperheads, and rattle snakes meet the charmer, all others get a chance to go away) when they surprise me but I try and identify them before doing anything to them. I lost a great dog to a cottonmouth, I certainly have no love for that species. Stay safe!

Every new pice of equipment has a learning curve. That’s some pretty heavy stuff in there too. I’ve hit stuff I was unaware of with the grapple and brush hog myself a few times. Hang in there. You’ll get better with it in time.

Does this model have height adjustable skids?
@theturfjunkies4052
@theturfjunkies4052 Жыл бұрын
The skids are adjustable and so is the roller in the back. I’ve been trying different height adjustments to find the sweet spot. I will have more videos of this unit in the future. Stay tuned to the channel.

Adjust top link to put roller on the ground and the skids slightly off the ground. Only lower mower until roller engages the ground

The belts on my finish mower smoke when cutting thick grass. I’ve snapped a couple of belts but I guess it’s cheaper and easier to change a belt than to change a gearbox. Usually the grass, which can grow six or seven feet tall, needs two passes to cut. The issue is a mountain of cut grass clogs up the mower. I’d like to buy a flail mower to cut long grass. I hope it doesn’t clog up like a finish mower does.

If you get one get it with the Y blades. They are designed to cut grass rather than the hammer blades which perform better in woody material better. Keeping the roller in the lowest hole will open the discharge chute more. I won’t say it will clog up all the time but leaves a more even discharge of grass rather than it windrow up like a brush cutter. I just recorded a job going from woody material to tall grass and seeing the difference. Stay tuned for that video in the future.

When you see dirt behind you that means you’re too low. Dirt plus wet vegetation creates the clog that burnt your belt.
