At what point do you press the chip-reset button on the carts? when you get a warning that it's running low, or when it says fully empty with an "X" mark.

I can’t get it to recognise the cartridges despite pressing the button multiple times and for multiple seconds I have pushed it down hard do you have any idea what I can do please
