Ciudad Romana de Pollentia and Museu Monogràfic de Pollença(Alcúdia, Mallorca, Spain)
Pollentia was a Roman city and is the most important archaeological site from the Roman period in Mallorca (Spain). It is located in the municipality of Alcudia. The name derives from the nearby town of Pollensa during the Islamic period. Based on classical authors, the Roman consul Quinto Cecilio Metelo (Quintus Caecilius Metellus) founded the city 50 years after the Roman conquest of the Balearic Islands between 123 and 121 CE. However, the archaeological excavations that have been carried out in the city dated the founding of the city between 80 and 70 CE during the Sertorius War. About ten kilometers away from this site, there was the pre-Roman and Roman town of Civitas Bocchoritana (Pollensa), which was the only federated city in Mallorca. Archaeological excavations have made it possible to study and document the evolution of the city. The historical life of the Roman city spans from 70-80 BCE until the 12th century CE. The settlement includes different stages that include a post-layotic, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine phases and also an important Islamic stage that can be seen in a necropolis above the forum.
