The overflow amount is displayed in the top right as production on the ancient walls before you change the production queue to Apadana. Also a nifty strategy is to pick up Goddess of the Harvest and when paired with Magnus your faith numbers skyrocket. If you can find yourself in a golden age you can select workers and settlers purchasable with faith to baloon your empire very quickly

Good video. I disagree on a couple small points. I move Magnus around in the early game, but I eventually settle him in a production city to get benefit from the hammer-increasing skills. Amani is a huge weapon in the loyalty game. Combined with Bread & Circuses, she can flip large cities. I've taken nearby enemies out of the game with her loyalty skills. Liang is a good mobile governor to get fisheries. She turns mediocre water tiles into usable tiles, especially next to sea resources.
@balfizan6 жыл бұрын
I recently used his chop overflow mechanic well into the late game when building support units, walls and ships. Getting that early boost is a huge help even when its not as drastic as is shown here. Also on the rare occasion I feel the need to clear a permanent resource like wheat or rice to place a wonder later in the game he comes in really handy. And I think he doesn;t like Amani because he doesn't do military victories, he thinks its more difficult to get the other victory types on diety. And I fully agree with him that outside of a couple of niche applications fisheries are a waste of builder charges.
@jamesheaney51506 жыл бұрын
I'm torn on fisheries. I like them... most of the time. It's a lot of management and timing to get her to a city just when a builder charge is in the same area. maybe it's a bit too much management for the benefit. I usually create fisheries for the obvious tiles (2+ sea resources). Liang doesn't create a "Sea Petra", but she does improve coastal tiles a lot. Overall, I still think that the fisheries promotion is worth getting. I have to overcome my aversion to chopping resources. It's probably holding my game back. I think I plant Magnus because I'm hesitant to chop Wheat/Copper, etc. Potato's vids have been a bit of a shake up for my play style. They're very different from my usual games. I like a bit of warfare, especially in the mid/late game. It breaks up the "nextturnnextturnnextturn" monotony of cultural victories. It doesn't hurt that I can take Pericles/Peter/Catherine out of the running :)
@matt-stam6 жыл бұрын
But wouldn't you want the 20% science/culture + 2x GPP dude sitting in your biggest city?
@jamesheaney51506 жыл бұрын
My science and production cities aren't always in the same place. Pingala might wind up in a city with a great campus adjacency bonus. Magnus usually ends up in the city that can reach the most strategic resources. The capital is given to you by the New Game RNG. After that, you can pick city locations for specific needs like production or science. It's weird, but my production cities are usually much smaller than my science/culture cities. They're more specialized, and don't need a lot of population. For example, I'm addicted to the Venetian Arsenal. I know it's bad for me, but I can't stop. I usually pick one city location solely to get this wonder. Whatever other benefit it gives throughout the game is just gravy...
@Tulkas2196 жыл бұрын
n panth - Yeah, Liang's fisheries ability is one of my favourites, especially if you become suzerain of Auckland and get the coastal production bonus. That combination enables you, over time, to create a "Sea Petra" in every one of your coastal cities.

You’re underestimating Amani. Her last ability to double envoys is useful if there’s a really strong city state like Auckland or Carthage or Valleta or Zanzibar or something on the map. You can use spies to fabricate scandals to cut the envoys of the top civ in half and then use her to double all of yours. I’ve taken and held high demand city states from competitors that hand like 30 envoys invested with as little as 8 envoys invested from myself. Much stronger than you think.

Came across your channel and understood the basics. Yesterday was playing Wilhelma and in my capital Amsterdam got a 136 production in Industrial age. This was using Aqueduct, Dam, Main building and Magnus as Governor around the Industrial zone. Plus used the military card of 100% Industrial adjacency bonus. Was out of districts to build in 10 turns. Thanks for your videos. Really enjoyed them.

I think the last +15% to Wonders does not apply 'cause the initial overflow was generated when you were building the wall and not the wonder. It probably affected the per turn hammers and that's why you had 3 more hammers than your initial calculation.

Thank you for acknowledging that war is the "easier" path. I've always felt that military victories are less interesting because it's pretty easy to beat the AI over with a big stick and then leisurely work your way to any victory you may want. To me, that's the single biggest downside to Civ VI, as the AI is incredibly warmongery. Which is ironic since they'll almost guaranteed call the player a warmonger for defending themselves. The only benefit I've seen with this is that they've become even more triggerhappy when it comes to attacking City States in R&F meaning you can liberate those to negate your warmonger penalties. It's far more interesting to try and beat the AI in other areas without using the military brute force approach to cripple all competition.

Combine a 3rd promotion with a population 10 city, and that's 50 gold total. Amani's "Prestige" upgrade can be really helpful to give you a few more turns when you're conquering another continent. When I go domination victory, I tend to have 4-5 governors just to make sure that I only have to take cities once. Even so, if you're going up against an enemy in a golden age, it might not be enough - Amani gives 2 loyalty extra, which at the very least buys you enough time to capture more cities to help your loyalty balance.
@ballpasteshlepp6 жыл бұрын
The best thing about victor is that you can transfer him to a rebellious newly conquered city in 3 turns. That quick loyalty boost can save your foothold city; especially when invading a civilization on a different continent. Even the most disloyal cities take 4 turns to rebel. Getting victor in there buys you a few more turns to turn the loyalty in your favor.

Agreed on Magnus in general: very powerful. Surplus Logistics, though, can be useful if you are chopping rainforest (gives production and food) or harvesting food resources, because it speeds your food growth in the city. This can be an excellent way to turn a low productivity 1 population city into a higher productivity 4-5 pop city, in a few turns. Beyond that, the Goddess of the Harvest pantheon becomes ridiculously overpowered with this: double food and production gain from harvests, then you get all of that added to your faith total as well. Say Hello to Early Religion, Easy 2 Apostles for 4 beliefs of your choice. On rainforests, this becomes absurdly powerful.

Dunno about the fishery for liang, i like to build coastal cities with a lot of water tiles,and having extra food on these boosts the growth of the city, which in turn then raises your production/science/gold/culture. If you combine this with a well times musem of halikarnossos, lighthouse, and have a decent amount of see ressources, you can get a mega city in roughly 100 turns with 40 or more pop. Which just shits out units/buildings/wonders/gold/science/culture/faith. If done correctly on a few coastal cities, all of these are around 30 -40pop by turn 150 (250online game). Only downside to this is that an attacking naval force will never die, as they just plunder to 100% hp up :D

well I dont think so: maybe they will take away how the policy cards enhance it more. which I would assume is just a simple tweak to the function in when it is added in the formula. like: here is city base prod per round, that gets multplied by policy cards. and if a chop happens that will just be added directly to the building/unit being produced while any overflow is saved for next project of the city but does not receive a multiplier of policy cards. indirekt nerf but so far this mechanic seems too abusable and probably not as intended? Curious if it was.
@mikestarface85714 жыл бұрын
What if you had a builder with extra charges, but nothing to chop, would it make sense to plant a Forrest and then chop it again? Would that still result in a productivity proffit?
@MegaEz2pwnU6 жыл бұрын
Great video. Two quick questions. First, if you queue an item that costs less than the overflow does it get lost? (ex. you have 100 production overflow, and queue a 60 production archer, do you lose out on the 40 production or does it go to the next item you select). Second, how do you weight chop now vs. chop later since yields rise as you continue down the tech/civic trees. Is there a general rule of thumb that you use to decided between these factors? Thanks for the video, and am looking forward to your next Let's Play!

I think you may be underestimating the usefulness Magnus' Vertical Integration for a science victory. IZ stacking bonuses were ridiculously powerful in vanilla (for the patches it was present). Great scientist generation is much harder to get now, even with stockpiling money from big ben. Buying them isn't a reliable way to secure a fast victory. Nor is campus research grants as effective anymore since democracy no longer synchronizes. They're still good, but not as good. Hard building the space ship parts is likely the fastest route. Now that IZ stacking is (partly) back, it's very easy to create a production powerhouse city. Ruhr valley + globalization + about 5-7 IZ factories/power plants. It's expensive to build all those buildings. But, it may be worth it to spend the gold from big ben to buy those buildings instead. They don't buy many GS anymore anyway, and they come late with how slow the eras are. After you have those production buildings up, just run campus research grants until you win. I still have to experiment around with optimization. But 300-400 production is certainly possible.

Endgame Haven't done the math, but pingala has production boost toward space parts. I imagine building the parts with him would be easier. You don't have to plan out cities, Industrial zones for Magnus full promotion use that way. And pingala has better promotions in my opinion anyway.

I haven't been through enough play to be sure of myself, but I've been looking at the Government Plaza as a later build to use a bit like the Forbidden Palace in Civ IV. That is, you'd want the Forbidden Palace as far from the Capital as possible to reduce corruption as much as possible. So, you'd want the Government Plaza as far from the Capital as possible to bolster loyalty as much as possible.
@jamesheaney51506 жыл бұрын
I use the Government plaza for the adjacency that it gives. I try to position it between 2-3 cities, with few resources/hills around it. @eberlchl5 жыл бұрын
@@samuelcaie6289 I like using vertical int too because its a fun to make ridiculously overpowered production cities. But how much production did you put into getting 6+ surrounding cities up to power plants? I don't wanna do the math, but it's a crap ton.

also one city benefits from it the rest is just utter waste

liang is also good (especially for china which is builder focused) and kind of synergises with magnus since your builders get an extra charge. And since it's both of their first ability i think liang first then make a builder then magnus as your second governor point before you use the builder for chops might be good.
@JosephTansley2 жыл бұрын
While I agree that in principle, with the right set-up Magnus' initial ability is great, I'm just not convinced it's that great except in that very specific set of circumstances, and would rather go with a governor that provides consistent value every turn. If anything (unless you're upgrading him and leaving him in a specific city to pump out strategic resources) he's the epitome of a situational governor (compared to say, Pingala who gives consistent value every single turn of the game). Perhaps it's just me, but I generally only harvest tiles rarely, and normally when I've finally finished using the extra resources from the tile and need the space for a wonder or specific district.

Magnus is essential for a religious victory. I always choose the pantheon that also gets 100% faith for chops. So powerful to send three apostles together and always beat CPU.

Since Magnus just got nerfed in the Spring update, does this strategy still work, and is he still the best governor to take first most of the time?

At Pingala you say that some traits make you want to move him around and the others to move him around ... it's like you have to make a decision.

While I love Potato's videos, many of his advices don't work against human opponents. Literally yesterday my team was able to raise a very problematic rebellion in opponents' team city by using Amani's Emissary skill. Multiplayer is very often a completly different game:)

Does Monarchy's native +50% defensive building bonus stack with the limes-wall-chop? Because that could make Monarchy even stronger as an early mid-game government.
@PotatoMcWhiskey6 жыл бұрын
jrm78 It did in the previous patch but monarchy no longer gives production towards walls.
@jrm786 жыл бұрын
Ah. I'll chalk that up to not having Rise and Fall yet - though if they fixed that in Civ 6 vanilla, they should fix the card for Monarchy. Still, I enjoy your videos and find them informative.

You didn't mention Victor's ability to be placed in a city after only 3 turns. This can be very helpful when you have loyalty problems in a war. Say you have a smaller city that you've taken close to the other side's capital, to keep it from rebelling, it helps to be able to place a governor in that city faster than you otherwise would so you can get the loyalty bonus and keep that city from rebelling.

Magnus was nerfed from 100% to 50%, can't say it was unreasonable nerf, this abuse was insane.

Great video! One question: Can production overflow carry over if you don't spend it all on the next turn? For example, if you bought an archer instead of the wonder, would the remaining 237 carry over to the next turn?

Yes, it works for any number of turns.

Pingala is super strong combined with the Oracle. You even beat Deity AIs to a lot of early great people. If you get a religion, Moksha can also be used to maximize beliefs like the +1 science per religious follower in foreign cities. In this case I'd probably skip Reyna or get the Casa wonder.

Great video!! Please allow me a sugestion? Sometimes you speak a little too quick, it´s harder to understand since english is not my native language. I guess some other viwers may feel the same way around the globe. Could you please explain a little about harvest ? I´m always pitty on harvesting. What do you do ? Do you grow forests again ? Thank you, please keep the great work.

better to raze a city then to capture ii if it's loyalty can't be changed when going the domination route.

I have been using Magnus as my main for a few months. It is hard to go back. I really love not losing pop in the early game and he is also strong in the mid and late games. I constantly get at least 400 production in my capital in all games. Honestly, I don't even care that much for the chop bonus, even though it is great. EDIT: I just realized this is an old video and Magnus changed LOL

Devs are well aware of the "Abuse" and have mentioned it on the Maori premiere. I suspect it'll be nerfed, but who knows. These games all have some kind of trick. Imagine you're a game designer, you create a set of conditions that if one is really clever they can use to great advantage in the game. Then everyone learns it, starts doing it, and they nerf it.

Does this still work in 2022?
@drphilChemist Жыл бұрын
Nope. Magnus was nearly completely nerf'd: You only get 50% chop bonus AND as of Gathering Storm, chop over flow was completely nerf'd. The bonus production from the specific build (defensive walls in the video) counts only to that build and disappears once you start a new build where it doesn't apply. I think it still works if you build another applicable target (like next level walls). The no decrease in population on building a Settler still works nicely and is good, but I'm not sure I'd say Magnus is the "best" gov ... depends on your victory target.

Reyna with 2 promotions with a commercial hub, city, and harbor adjacent to each other, on a river, plus 2 fish, plus policy cards for harbor and commercial hub adjacencies, plus golden age for science from gold districts, plus a shipyard, equals 30 gold, 30 science, 15 production for free. Combine a 3rd promotion with a population 10 city, and that's 50 gold total. Combine an extra district like a governer plaza, and an extra fish, you can reach 59 gold, 39 science, 17 production for free. That's 115 resources not including what your citizens are working!

So admittedly your way better and more knowledgeable about civ6 than I am but I use the City state Governor more to stabalize my cities that I captured and are revolting or when I settle way to close to an enemy that starts the revolt in my new city, and if you buy her negative to enemy city ability while your in the heart of a conquest with say the romans or something you can destabalize several enemy cities and then just walk through or even wait until they turn and ask to join your civilization. I had one early game where I bought her first cause I was spawned in a map right next to france and I took her first two cities while she was distracted by england on a true location earth map which made her implode in on herself and then later against spain I made three of his cities revolt so she has her uses and if you dont want to declare early surprise wars she can net you some early cities if your just a little patient, and big gains if you get a city where there is a big cluster of several cities all within the 9 tiles so a sneaky way to conquest since once the city flips to revolt you dont have to declare any wars ... I dunno my just two cents that she is at least 3rd tier and not complete trash .....

Amani isn't as useless as you think. It is situational, but she is great to passively flip cities with her Prestige Perk. I've used it very effectively in several playthroughs while warmongering and while doing peaceful playthroughs.
