Get on your knees and thank God for songs like this. George Vreeland Hill

@McDenis09 I hope you don't view all Southerners as racist. I'm Virginian, born and bred. I'm proud of my heritage and I look up to Robert E. Lee (who was not a hateful man at all, the only reason he fought for the south was because he refused to fight his homeland of VA) quite a bit. However, I'm far more proud to be an American. I'm glad the south lost because of what things would be like should it have won, and I'm glad tolerance is slowly making its way through the US.

I am not American, but a very patriotic Canadian, but I still feel pride for your country when this song is played.

@jimmypreble I agree. This is the "standard" version. I was fortunate enough to play it, using exactly this version, when I was in high school. It went out over the radio on a local station here in NYC. I was one of the "second violins" and I still remember my part. We had a full orchestra and a full chorus, just like the one we hear here. It was one of the most memorable events of my whole life!

Thank you for using the original version with the verse "We shall die to make men free" I think that means more than we shall live to make men free.

@Astron278 True, I joined to fight for my loved ones and I typically have a deep sense of patriotism. But I disagree with the unnescisarry wars like Iraq and (god forbid) Lybia.

@Astron278 It does to me, everyone has different opinions, idk maybe I'm just coming from the thought process of a soldier but I feel that we should never forget the ones who died for us to be free.

bluebelly07 is right, plus the 1812 overture was written in 1881, yes in commemoration of the Napoleonic invasion of Russia but many years after the actual event

"Chris Brown a little hero, full of light and sweet and brave, Arizona knows their valor when they fought her rights to save Their Blood, her blood now stains them, the right who fear and rave, ...but the truth goes marching on." Now embroiled in poison, the great republic cries Corruption, hate, distortion cast aside 'fore she revives free siblings of the nation raise your head and use your eyes The truth goes marching on.

The tune is actually taken from a song Union soldiers used to sing about John Brown (considered a martyr by the Union). Howe penned the poem and they naturally put those words to this music. It was said that the poem "just seemed to fit" the music. I don't think it was a Russian song, but maybe you can prove me wrong. I would like to see the link to the Russian song if you have got it.

Always good to hear music with meaning and spiritual power. You can tell this song came before modern times. I hate it when some dumb pop artist tries to sing this song. It always sounds like shit to me when someone tries to modernize it.

ok seriously people who are saying the COA is going to rise again...look at the nation currently sure some states would join you but the majority would be union and i don't think you would find much allies outside of the middle east times have changed get on with life men on both sides would have moved on by now why can't we all we're all americans in blood and remember the revolutionary war was fought in the north and the south we're tied by trust let it be that way.
@Melvin294l11 жыл бұрын
thats not the original, the real one which was sang by the soldiers was "john browns body" .. this here is the changed version of julia ward howe.. it was used when the cw was already over.. the original is about the abolitionist john brown, in her version its all about the lord (as if he and not jb helped to free the slaves) old version much better :P

@LongDongSilver666 I pretty much agree with you, although I wouldn't resort to using curse words. The problem is, unfortunately, that the South values religion (such as it is) over education. As long as that's true, they'll always be holding themselves back. Education (including real SCIENCE, of course - not that "Intelligent Design" garbage) is the only way to advance to the kind of perfect America we all claim to want.

When the Civil War began American Commanders believed that the best way to attack an enemy position was to line up shoulder to shoulder and slowly advance toward the enemy position. As a result casualty rates were very high and only the fact that early Civil War rifles were of limited range, timely to reload and inaccurate. By the end of the war Southerners, at least, had learned the value of entrenchments and were very good and building fortifications, which led to the terrible battle losses for the Union side at the Battle of Cold Harbor. The men on both sides who lined up like that and marched straight into the teeth of enemy gunfire must have had balls the size of basketballs. We owe those men, on both sides, our honor and respect for their commitment to their cause and their willingness to lay down their lives for it. Removing or destroying monuments that honor Confederate leaders is just plain wrong because many of those men, like General Robert E. Lee, served with honor and distinction in the U.S. Army prior to the Civil War. They fought for a cause they believed in and, in losing, became part of our American history.
@maryannfiebelkorn7439 ай бұрын
I owe nothing on this earth to men from the confederacy who left the union and who left the union to perpetuate slavery...General Lee and all like him were traitors to the Union..and in Union cemetaries such as Arlington all the traitors from the south are buried in circles facing each other away from the American Flag. I owe everything to men like my two great great grandfathers who volunteered to fight in the union army during the Civil War..I owe everything to men like the Union Colonels Joshua Chamberlain and Strong Vincent who sacrificed everything to save the Union at the Battle of Little Round Top Gettysburg.

@TheCameljockie How about you do a little research before you go spouting garbage that you know nothing about? Most Northerners enlisted to fight the South with the same enthusiasm that we Americans had when we enlisted after 9/11, or after pearl Harbor. Your ignorance is truly sad. And frightening.
