It is time to revisit sewing the US on an issue blanket. This episode demonstrates a third way to match an original and provides more tips that could help with the other templates shared previously. Will shows you how to sew on the US template that is provided with the US Issue Blanket from B & B Tart. Their reproduction is based on an original carried by a private in the 7th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry. Bonus, if you are learning to sew, you will see how to do a back stitch that is a key stitch to know!

Oh my God that was awesome! I had no idea that there was that much detail into sewing those blankets. It really makes you sit back and wonder just how much we take for granted. Will, I thank you for your time to show us these moments, tasks and day to day goings about the Civil War!

I also found chalking the outline of the stencil before sewing was much easier than sewing through the paper stencil. Another great video.

Nice tutorial, Will. I've visited the work apartment. I think it is a stop on the Chicago CityPASS tour. 😉

Sherman's raid of two army corps from Vicksburg to meridian was brilliant , they traveled light no tents , I also remember reading that some units gave their soldiers and option , take either a wool blanket OR a gum blanket , which would you have taken ??? , take care Mike Ferenz of the HOGG MESS

The wool works wet or dry. I guess I would go that way. How about you?

What i do is take exact measurement of the letters then figure out the middle of the blanket the take a pencil and draw on the letters with the measurements I took earlier of the letter

How about using a pricking wheel and chalk dust ?
@CivilWarDigitalDigest
@CivilWarDigitalDigest 2 жыл бұрын
It certainly is an option, although I would be concerned about how loosely woven comparatively a blanket is compared to other fabric. Also, as a tutorial, the pricking wheel is a rather specialized piece of kit that a lot of people may not have. That’s why we chose to go a different way. Tailor’s chalk should also be more universal to acquire.

Any source for the yarn used to make the "US". Any suggestions?

When we did not get out from the maker, we often use just worsted wool yarn.
