It was the way the Confederate Government tried to supply clothing to the volunteer soldiers in the field. This clothing system is often referenced but is often misunderstood. While it doesn’t involve clothes, there’s a paragraph in Grant’s Memoirs on the burning of Jackson Mississippi that recognizes the military value of cloth mills and why they were destroyed: Sherman and I went together into a manufactory which had not ceased work on account of the battle nor for the entrance of Yankee troops. Our presence did not seem to attract the attention of either the manager or the operatives, most of whom were girls. We looked on for a while to see the tent cloth which they were making roll out of the looms, with "C. S. A." woven in each bolt. There was an immense amount of cotton, in bales, stacked outside. Finally I told Sherman I thought they had done work enough. The operatives were told they could leave and take with them what cloth they could carry. In a few minutes cotton and factory were in a blaze. Grant p 227 Movement Against Jackson W.S.

As a dressmaker I find these uniforms fascinating. So much braiding with coloured fabric built in underneath,pockets in tail flaps etc. I hate to think how long they took to make,to potentially end up with its wearer in a remote unmarked grave.

Civil war minutes episodes go into quite meticulous detail about the uniforms. Some uniforms have buttons from the opposing sides uniform,possibly because they lost some of theirs and stole them off the fallen. And bushwackers stole blue coats so they could approach enemy camps,and for other similar activity. Its fascinating!

Check out our episode about campaigning in the cold. We have a good discussion there about the use of cotton. Put simply, people who work outside will say the cotton kills. When it gets wet, it does nothing to help your body stay warm and in fact leeches heat away from you. Good question!
