Hi Chris It’s amazing that we still see images like this , regardless of all the regulations to prevent it . For as you say not all this work can be blamed on amateurs . You could spend your entire career just putting other people’s work right , never mind trying to do new installations . Ha ho it was ever thus .😃. Best wishes Mike. 👍

I've been on a job where the original meter box was in a little wooden closet nailed to a pole, the box itself was once made of sheet steel but was now more like crispbread from exposure to the elements. I dared not touch it. It was a single phase feed that had one 10A circuit wired to the house, with two rusty steel cables running between the pole and wall. The ground rod was at the root of the pole and the live/neutral wires were just single rubber insulation wrapped around those cables. There were 3 phases wired to the top of that pole, and we ran a 4 core 10 SQmm aluminium cable underground to the house wall, where a weatherproof meter box & main unit was mounted. The owner dug the 25 m ditch (70 cm deep) with a spade. The inner wiring of the house was done as far as possible while we waited for the grid company to connect the new feed cable to the pole top and remove the old box. Every circuit was tested by wiring it temporarily into the old feed, so when the new box was commissioned, it was just plug and play. It was an old summer cabin that the owner converted to be habitable all year round, but he'd so far had only one light bulb and socket wired in each room, the way he bought it. Built likely after the wars, electricity added early 60's or so. Another creepy building was a farmhand's hut from late 50's, where a friend of mine moved for a few years. It also had one 10A circuit wired from the main building, crossing the road similarly with single insulated rubber wrapped around cables strung between poles, and 1,5 SQmm 2 core cable wrapped around a rather thin steel cable on each side for the last 10 meters before it reached the building wall. The only ground was at the end of the main building, and at the hut, the kitchen socket just had a jump wire from N to ground prong. Several other electricians looked at the contraption and said that it fulfills the code of the time it was built, and is generally safe when properly operated. Obviously that contraption could not be altered at all without legal requirement to rebuild it essentially completely - the poles and support cables could have stayed, nothing else.

7:56 is a fused switch for bottle fuses (NEOZED), very common in Germany to feed subboards, because fuses are the only way to reach true selectivity.

You should see the wiring on one of my old work place, 100yo workshop with 110 upp to 500v and the biggest fuses was 200amp. You had to check the voltage before you pluged in something because the regular outlets were 110,127 and 240v.

I'll have to take some pics of my house light switch 'backboxes' sometime - just a bent strip of metal threaded for the facia screws.. Added to that the previous owner fitted metal light fittings everywhere and there's no earth in the lightimg circuit snd have the roses have choc blocks behind.. Socket ring has rubber cable too of course. Whoever did kitchen work for previous owners decided to put a 2nd CU in rather than touch any of it. Though thats got a 32a breaker in in wired to dont know what! Looking forward to getting a rewire done next year when extension is built! Luckily I've found a couple of electricians in Manchester who follow your work as well as N bundy etc so hopefully their work lives up to your quality when the time comes. Mind ive had to tell them no kopex in my garden office though..

3:47 I've seen before in a rental property - in my case it was when years of oil and steam etc from the cooker top got into the switch for it that was parked horizontally maybe 30cm from the cooker top and it was arcing inside the switch which caused heat to build up and it cooked the wire, it's why I don't like the "standard" installs where the cooker top is in close proximity to the switch or other sockets. Doesn't take much. IMHO there needs to be a regs change over that - either as relates to switch design and allowing steam inside or where switches are placed.

I think we have to take a realistic view here, not all trades people operate at your level. That’s a real good advert for having the electrics properly checked. But how many householders know this is something they should do? They turn the lights on plug devices in and it works! I watch channels such as this and plumbers, no doubt standards have risen over the years in many trades and along with that is the price. You all deserve a good days pay for a good days work but forgive the public for not understating what that takes in training, test gear, tools, van etc etc. A neighbour of mine pays £149 a year for an electrical safety check which entails a walk around her home. No testing! Education is key, you do a great job, but not all professional trades follow your honest standards. I was on Instagram following a plumbing chat and the bitching about customers was dreadful. Yes we are all different and have our ways, that’s life no matter what profession people decide to take. Carry on banging the drum and raising standards. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

@@K3ndallUKI was talking specifically about the earth that Chris didn't mention coming off the neutral block. If it's a TNCS supply then you can see why someone might have done it. It just moves the point at which the earth is split off. They still shouldn't have done it. It could become dangerous. It's rogue (disregards the rules). There are clearly other issues.

I was working with some horrible armoured cable today replacing a sodium son wall light for an Led bulkhead type and went to shorten the wires for terminating, cutting the inner sheath back but it was just cracking off no knife needed and the insulation on the inner cores was just crumbling off showing the copper. I would say it's from Heat off the old light fitting ( Thermal effects) or it could rubbish cable.

On the first example which is typical example of non compatible devices being used. Do you not think Chris, manufacturers should have been legislated to make devices to a standard dimension? After all, when a socket or a wall switch is replaced you expect it to screw into a standard dimensioned box, so sometime in the past BS did use a bit of common sense. What went wrong when mcb’s rcd’s spd’s etc were released on to the market ?

8:10 hard to say where this is but I'd guess either France or more likely Romania, these seem to be the only countries that favour red for line (along with blue neutral and yellow/green earth) and that terminal box on the bottom really looks like something from behind the former Iron Curtain. 8:52 Netherlands I'd say. I reckon someone wanted to add some lights to the shed in this horrible DIY way. 9:32 the cover on this CU has melted, hasn't it? 14:30 that DB has seen an awful lot of damp I'd say. I'd love to know where this is from! Single phase and double-pole MCBs by the looks of it - maybe Italy? I've seen that kind of universal bus bar in Austria but only with one brand of MCBs and these definitely aren't F&G. A colleague once called these bus bars "the world's hottest 3D jigsaw puzzle". I once had the end of one of them pierce a bit of wire, another phase - lovely dead short!

Swapped a socket outlet this weekend. Was a little crispy inside, as one side of the dual outlet was entirely burnt up from the switch to the socket, and it was sparking. Yes the house that Stevie Wonder did the wiring, half the place is on one 20A breaker, and then the other half is on 2. Outbuilding breaker boxes was replace on sight, more because the cover was missing on the Heinemann one, and the breakers needed a hammer to turn them off, plus the only thing on the RCD was the geyser. Then replace a junction box feeding the pool, or more accurately put a new junction box there to replace the rust, as the one screw fell off when I undid it, and the other one sheared off as it was one with the remains. Have already replaced more than half the socket outlets and switches, along with lights, because of missing covers, painted over and intermittent. Strong house though, the main house walls are 15 inch brick, minimum, so I will need a really long drill to get through them. As far as we can figure it was a jail at one time, but the plans were destroyed years ago.
