One other CB you can get as a merch repub is if you have the trade port and the city and the county is within range, you can then get a CB for that county. As a merchant republic though, I don't see the benefit of owning a lot of counties. Unless there is an aspect of the range that it improves. The money makers are your trade ports and then any city holding, so I have never felt the need to expand counties. The one "perk" to being a killer patrician is with the distribution of the other family holdings, it is random, but evenly distributed among the other families, so it appears to be the only way you can get trade posts over your allowed limit. That's why as the head of a merch repub I always focus on seduction. You bring enough high intrigue women into your court, you become quite efficient at eliminating opposing families. It's all about the trade ports... and the money!

Counties make money. MR Coastal CB is one of the main ways to expand as MR as marriages are usually low tier

If a family with 4 or more tradeposts goes extinct YOU WILL AWAYS receive at least one even If you're over the limit. Fun little mechanic is to only kill families who own 4+ tradeposts so you will get 1 then repeat.

I'm not sure if you mentioned this btw. There are penalties that you have as a merchant republic head if you have lordship over vassals who are feudal government type. The penalty appears to be in relationship as feudal lords don't like to be vassals to the merchant republic head. I found that out by creating Jerusalim as Botstain of Gotland in Sweden. Although, there might be other penalties I'm not sure of or unaware of. The dislike of having a ruler be of a 'wrong government type' might still be related to the traits of your vassals though. Just wanted to share this. I love the video btw, your laughter is contagious.

I'm new to CK2.... I'm not a merchant republic, so if another kingdom builds a trade post on MY coastal county, am I making trade money at all? Should I never increase the "trade practices" tech? Should I always wage embargo wars to get their trade posts out of my territory?
