Renown, also known as dynasty prestige, is a currency that can spent on actions targeting members of your dynasty. It can also be spent to unlock Legacies, buffs that benefit all members of your dynasty. In this video we look at how you can spend Renown, the Legacies you can unlock, and how to earn Renown.

Thanks, I really needed this great overview of this topic. One question: I've only played a few games so far, but the fifth tier Legacy bonuses do not seem to be worth five first tier ones. Even excluding that you have to pay for the second, third, and fourth tier bonuses to get to the fifth tier. For example, the Guile fifth tier of Family Connections prevents the first murder attempt as any of you dynasty members. That would be valuable if you were in an assassination war with some other dynasty, but not helpful otherwise. I'd rather have these five first tier bonuses: - Noble Veins: +30% chance to inherit and create good congenital traits (!) - House Warriors: Knight effectiveness +15% (!) and Prowess + 2 (meh) - Vibrant Court: better guests (!) and +10 courtier opinion (meh) - Bounteous Loins: +10% fertility (! As renown is based on number of dynasty members) - Mostly Fair: +5 popular opinion (meh) I'm not saying that any of the first tier bonuses are better than a fifth tier bonus, I'm saying that any five first tier bonuses are better than any of the fifth tier bonuses. In addition, you can purchase the first tier bonuses sooner than the fifth tier bonus. Let's say you have the first four Guile bonuses, you're getting 3 renown a month, and it's 1100 AD. You have two choices: Choice One: Wait 28 years, then 1128: get Nobel Veins (then wait 28 years) 1156: get House Warriors (then wait 28 years) 1184: get Vibrant Court (then wait 28 years) 1212: get Bounteous Loins (then wait 28 years) 1240: get Mostly Fair Choice Two: Wait 140 years, then 1240: get Family Connections

Thanks for the response! The great thing about the Crusader Kings series is the variety of play styles you can choose. This allows for differences in what each player values. The legacy bonus typically seems to improve and you increase in tier, so if value a certain play style (ex. a Martial playthrough where you want to conquer as much land as possible) it makes sense to go all the way to gaining the tier 5 bonus (extra Men at Arms and access to the House Guard is very strong). If you prefer to have more variety among your rulers, I wouldn't even get the tier 3 bonuses that give the 10% learning in the lifestyle tree until you get the other tier 1 and tier 2 legacy bonuses that you want. I would also say that not all tier 5 bonuses are equal. The +1 domain limit (Home Estates) doesn't appeal to me, but adding +5 years to your rulers life (Octogenarians) or +10 global opinion (Righteousness) seems very strong. Unlocking tier 1 legacies that aren't suited for your play style also means that you have to wait that much longer till you unlock the tier 5 bonus.

I think the low tier legacies are low hanging fruit, I can't imagine not getting Glory, Kin and Blood 2 in each campaign. These things, combined with a style growing your dynasty you describe, have sooo many synergies! Matrilineal marriage is key for growing dynasty and collecting good traits, and renown gain early is great. Fertility from fecund, beauty and legacy all stack to greatly increase the number. Genius kids, genius tutors and the legacy combine to get great educations. Even for a martial style this first may be better than starting the warfare line, although you'll want 1 and 2 soon too. Even more so for intrigue, have a four star education might be better than the first three legacies, although you can stack later. I'd probably pick up the free piety to create my own faith sooner. After this all and a lot of time your renown gain will be better. I'm not that impressed by most 3 and 4, so probably pick these based on which tier 5 you want.

House guards are not THAT strong because you can only have 1 stack. Better off dropping them for another regiment. But jot useless, as some think.

Yeah, I used to think you could get multiple groups of them. I have found it pretty easy to stomp the AI armies in the end-game though, so maybe spending 5000 renown on this final legacy isn't that great.
