*I love that there's so many Bobby Darin songs in this movie. I was a Bobby Darin tribute artist for years and love his work. Its funny how in the movie Kevin said he was tired of hearing it in the house but IRL he picked the soundtrack, was a massive Darin fan, even did an entire biopic movie in Bobby's honor because both he and his mom were giant Darin fans with no one in Hollywood to back his funding.*

I find it interesting that his wife really doesn't even care what really happened at work. That they were basically asking for him to justify why he should be able to keep his job and he just wrote some smart ass letter because he didn't really care anymore. Also, it looked like they wanted to downsize anyway, so most likely whatever he wrote wouldn't have made a difference.

@BrianBisetti

It’s not a conventional Hollywood happy ending, no. But it *is* a happy ending for Lester. In the opening scene he says “Both my wife and my daughter think I’m this gigantic loser, and they’re right.” By the end of the film, Lester has achieved self-actualization. I think the review in Variety said it best: by the end, Lester may have lost everything, but he’s no longer a loser. For me, that’s deeply satisfying.

Annette Bening did a fantastic job in this role of a woman stuck in a world of denial and appearances, at war with with herself and her emotions. The husband, though reprehensible in his own way, was at least honest with himself, and got the most out of terrible employer/job that he was going to lose anyway, and saving whatever soul he had left in the process. The daughter is the anchor, who sees right through the B.S. and calls it out for what it is, yet she hangs out with a girl who is also a total "facade". The movie exposes the myth of upward mobility in corporate America and the fragility of suburban family life and ideals.

@Mamyrbek Yerkaliyev yeah you live and you learn. I had some experiences before that one, but that was like what I would consider my first “REAL” relationship, add in being married on paper, I just had to make it work. Also add in the pressure on men from society and media, I had to man up and stick through it and always be there. “Happy wife happy life”, “it’s always on the man to fix it”, yadda yadda yadda.

so everyone just pretending to be happy. That explains why straight guys can get a bit drunk and dont mind dropping their pants to men who can give them more love in 1 night than 2 or 10 years with a Karen.

She can be upset with him for quitting his job if she wants. That is definitely the kind of thing that partners in marriage should discuss ahead of time. But is she really going to play this level of stupid with the details? He clearly fucking said that he got a year's pay as severance WITH BENEFITS. That was 60k per year which adjusted for inflation from the 1999 value is just under 98k in spending power. AND, he already has another job. Sure it's an hourly fast food job, but combined, he is easily bringing in over 110k in the next year, plus the cake of medical, dental, vision, etc. She is definitely not in a pressure situation as "sole bread winner" as she claims. As a realtor, she might be making more than him, but all that means it's that their combined income is actually better off now that he's bringing in bonus money while keeping his salary. They are literally better off than they were before he left for work this morning. C'mon Karen! I mean, Carolyn... Use your head here.

It is truly staggering that no matter what level of connection you have to people many will walk all over you like you're their damn property or welcome mat. They shut out any opinion you have, act like any decision you make is lesser than theirs, and treat you like your useless depite being the houses Hercules. The level of contempt, spite, and depravity some people are capable instead of admitting fault or consequence never ceases to push new boundaries.

I understand the violence he exhibits when he throws that plate of asparagus after being interrupted by his wife, just as I understand when humans riot and destroy things when a government doesn’t do anything for the better. When you aren’t heard, violence is a way to get people to pay a attention.
