It’s not a conventional Hollywood happy ending, no. But it *is* a happy ending for Lester. In the opening scene he says “Both my wife and my daughter think I’m this gigantic loser, and they’re right.” By the end of the film, Lester has achieved self-actualization. Annette Bening did a fantastic job in this role of a woman stuck in a world of denial and appearances, at war with with herself and her emotions. The husband, though reprehensible in his own way, was at least honest with himself, and got the most out of terrible employer/job that he was going to lose anyway, and saving whatever soul he had left in the process. The daughter is the anchor, who sees right through the B.S. and calls it out for what it is, yet she hangs out with a girl who is also a total "facade". The movie exposes the myth of upward mobility in corporate America and the fragility of suburban family life and ideals.

That was 60k per year which adjusted for inflation from the 1999 value is just under 98k in spending power. AND, he already has another job. Sure it's an hourly fast food job, but combined, he is easily bringing in over 110k in the next year, plus the cake of medical, dental, vision, etc. She is definitely not in a pressure situation as "sole bread winner" as she claims. As a realtor, she might be making more than him, but all that means it's that their combined income is actually better off now that he's bringing in bonus money while keeping his salary. They are literally better off than they were before he left for work this morning. C'mon Karen! I mean, Carolyn... Use your head here.

I understand the violence he exhibits when he throws that plate of asparagus after being interrupted by his wife, just as I understand when humans riot and destroy things when a government doesn’t do anything for the better. When you aren’t heard, violence is a way to get people to pay a attention.
