Edit :Nothing better than sunset at any harvest time any season no matter which place of world . Its the best time in my life when you following sunsets ,working hard behind the steering wheel ,well sunlight annoying your eyes But after sun gone you feel such relaxation in your body mix with incredible smells of crops I missed that feeling almost 10 years now Thanks for reminding me back

So glad the rice isn't burned anymore. I was going to Sac State when they still burning the rice stalks. It was miserable. I remember cleaning my bathroom and the next day I had rice ash all over the top of the tank. The smell got really tiring as did the irritated eyes. Thanks for embracing the mulch method.

It is interesting this year with the warm temperatures and north winds drying your fields and rice, your harvest went well, while the same temperatures and winds were causing problems in other part of the state - "it's an ill wind that blows no good". I enjoy your continuing reporting on rice farming and related topics.

@@Ricefarmingtv I bet it is pretty pricey😂 and the huge technology difference between that CTS and the 8600! Harvest went smooth except for a plug or two in the combine. Saw you guys out running while I was out running parts or other things. Did it all go well for you guys? Already blew out the combine and washing all the equipment tomorrow! Not too many plans for the winter except to get ready for next year.

This was wonderful Matt! It reminded me so much of harvest time with my Uncle and Grandpa. I couldn’t wait to be the first kid on the combine and I taught myself to hop on while that b,dated thing was moving too! 6 years old when I got it down pat... along with a couple of skinned knees, of course! Anyways! Thanks so much for sharing, it means so much to this ole farm girl!!!

Back in 1970-71 I flagged crop dusters in some of those very same fields outside of Richvale. Long...long hours for just a little bit of money. Back then the Ag-Cats had the big radial engines. I recall picking the granular fertilizer out of my hair until I figured a hat might be appropriate. Those were the days.

Use to see a lot of Claas equipment when I worked for Cummins. They have an assembly plant in Walesboro Indiana which I drove past every day. Starting to see quite a bit more of their equipment in fields around here, mostly grass/hay equipment, but that says a lot for them in an area where most farmers bleed either Red or Green!

It seems like I have been harvesting forever. I started with a Massey 90 special in 1956. I would drive while "Pops" took the truck to the barn in a 1946 Dodge. In 2019 I harvested 2000 acres with a 9770 while my son drove the grain cart. Some days we loaded up to 20 semis. Harvest has come a long ways in 64 seasons. Our first grain cart in 1965 held 400 bus now it takes 2 minutes to load a semi.

That 8600 combine is a no messing around machine when it comes to loading the cart besides threshing. My John Deere doing corn takes much more time. I have mine unloading a lot. One acre to fill the hopper and then an additional 1/3 acre before I empty the tank.
@robertreznik9330

The first combine I drove harvested 100,000 lbs in a day. The one I have can do that in just over 40 minutes. I think combines are getting better, in the 62 years I have been driving...this fall I did over 1800 acres as the driver.

About the CAT Lexions. Its actually pretty interesting why they were sold as CAT. In 1999 Claas started a Joint Venture with CAT Challenger, and produced Lexions in the US, and sold and serviced them via the network of CAT Network. Thats why they are branded that way. In return, Claas sold and serviced Challengers in Europe via their network. In 2002, the Challenger brand was sold to AGCO, and Claas took over the Joint-Venture and the manufacturing plant in the US. Then i would assume they slowly transformed the old network of dealerships and such into a claas network, and then sold Claas Products that way. I personally agree with the decision to market them in green/white, looks so much nicer.

We always usally disked our rice stubble our harvest was usally mid August early Sept. driest part of the year tried to get the disk going right behind the combines. Hope for a rain and disk again. On small paddies I'd use a breaking plow if it was going into cotton or soybeans the following year. Trying to use the still green stubble as a green manure crop.

Hi from italy! We are used to see the red white and green claas machines even the older challengers. There is a contractor near where i live who has two lexions 760 so i see them work all summer for the peas, wheat, barley, corn and soybean harvest because a average italian farm is 24 acres; is too small for buing a combine or even a big tractor. so contractors are very popular here.

Nice machines and see the appeal, but that makes me wonder what does that mean for the American market on combines, I like the old guy best cause hes been around to see how these changes as nice as they are we get weeded out little at a time and we suffer on ohers somewhere else gain. Just me that what I've seen in my short 50 years, lots of changes and lots of lose for the people on the ground maybe not for those in the skyscraper looking down , just us on the ground, I'm an American and lobe my country and I'm all for supporting my country and it's industries, which support the worker, the family then to the field that support there family to the table where we all eat, God bless our farmers and America. My understanding of Cat & Claus is that in early 2000's when Cat got into farming they needed a combine and partnered with Claus. Then in the 2014's time frame they decided to get out of the farming line of equipment. Thus the Claus name started to appear.

2 cups in the rice maker, watch some RFTV while I wait for dinner. Eating it without any topping or sides, just love the freshly cooked rice taste, cant wait to try the fresh milled. Thinking maybe I should stock up on white and brown, how long does the fresh milled taste last? Can I possibly mill rice myself? Is there a low cost machine to do it, or maybe a manual old school machine since its just enough for a few people? hey.... maybe you can branch out into researching rice milling and do some shows on that? I am going to rewatch the Brazil stuff, that wood rice milling machine...

Question. Do you worry about fire in the crop when it’s that dried down ?

Not really. Concern would occur in high north winds blowing the dry straw all around, potentially into the machine (on engine, exhaust or belts). That’s right Stephen, he’s been farming for 77 years but has been driving a combine for 47 years. In part because back in ‘42 they didn’t have a combine. Don has seen an amazing amount of technological advancement in rice during his lifetime. -M.
