Tears are literally streaming down my cheeks watching this, I am on my first placement the staff nurse are so short with me, I can honestly say I have been humiliated into submission, my enthusiasm is crushed, I am getting on amazing with difficult patients and all parents like me but yep I am getting destroyed with being constantly being picked apart. It is hard enough as a mature student but I am doing the same I am just keeping a low profile. Thank you so much for this deep breaths I am counting the days until I am finished sending love xxx

Oh no Lisa!!! This is not ok for them to treat you like that :( is there anyone you can speak to about it all? Placement team etc? Don’t just put up with this, that’s not fair. You don’t get paid for these placements and there to learn 💙 xx

I've just found your channel and I wish I'd found it last year. Only 7minutes in to the video and I'm already feeling better 💙 I'm on placement just now and I love it, but I recently had a miscommunication with some colleagues and it had me in tears. We sat down and talked it through and I went from almost walking out and packing it in, to doing CPR compressions and feeling fantastic in the space of a few hours! Thank goodness I didn't leave in tears or I'd have woken up today feeling awful and maybe not going back for my next shift. Talking things through is so important and reflecting on what went wrong or didnt understand is so important. Its all part of our learning. Not every placement is going to be amazing but you will still come away with lots that you have learned. Off to finish the video now... x

Thank you so much for making this video, i struggle sometimes with placement & my stress gets very high during this time but watching this video helped me to put things in perspective. This is my mantra from now on " one bad day at placement or one bad 4-6 week placement is not gonna define me. I still gonna have an amazing nursing career ahead " Thank you so much, sending best wishes your way from Australia :)

Excellent vid, very positive and good advice. How we react to other people is very important, and the more practice we get in choosing to respond professionally and positively (despite the other persons negativity) the better. This builds positive resilience skills. Not easy but worth doing and also adding in lots of self care for us too, as dealing with other peoples negativity can be draining (and upsetting). Good support systems are important. I think you would be a good mentor in the future if you went down that route. Take care. :)

john stones Thank you John! 💕 it does definitely help not responding to negativity I think :) I’d love to be a mentor, I can’t wait to help other students and hopefully be a great mentor for them :) Hope you’re having a great weekend! X

This has helped me, I am on my first ward placement as all of mine have been on community which I’ve loved. The staff are great nurses, very good to the patients and they’re nice but their hard if that makes sense. There’s no warmth to it in my opinion. I want to get the experience and be enthusiastic. I have 5 weeks to go. This has helped reassure me because I’ve been thinking am I up for this
@ClaireCarmichael5 жыл бұрын
Please don't doubt if you're up for it! You are!! You're probably similar to me, and are a community nurse :D It's a completely different feel out there in the community, it's amazing. And when you qualify thats where you can work as a NQN

Claire Carmichael thank you so much!! I’m usually a mental health nurse so this is my enhancement placement and I am just more at home in mental health. But luckily it’s my shortest placement. It’s nice to know I’m not alone and it’s not that I’m a rubbish nurse, just that that area is not for me

I am glad I came across your videos. I am just about to qualify and I am on a make up time placement in a ward. I did not feel very welcomed and I get the feeling my mentor doesn’t want to teach me because she has other students in different years from me. I was literally just left to do everything on my own. It was a horrible first shift and I now feel like I don’t want to go back. I have cried most days and I still have four weeks left. I am really hoping these shifts fly in and then I can get into my sign off and start learning for my job once I qualify. I just need to find the motivation to push through

I am on my final year as a student nurse on placement . I am thinking of quitting the course. My mental health has suffered during these years I guess there is still bias towards male nurses or maybe just when you are male East Asian student nurse. They think just because you're being nice you are stupid. People treat you differently and less than students from other nationalities.

see I am looking to apply for nursing this December but its the fear of having a bad mentor or a horrible experience at placement that makes me doubt my decision.
@ClaireCarmichael4 жыл бұрын
Don’t think like that :) it’s rare you’ll have a bad mentor / experience. There will be stuff you don’t like 100%! But you’re only on that placement for so many days / weeks. It’s not forever. And if you ever have major issues, you go to your uni placement team or placement link and tell them. They should be sorting it out for you! ☺️ don’t let anything put you off following your dreams. There’s always a solution xx

Watching this today after a long day in an acute ward, about to throw the towel in. My Asseor is so good, but my supervisor is the most difficult person to deal with. She is also friends with the ward manager. So there's nowhere to run to. I witnessed a student brought to tears, it broke my heart. I guess students are scared to report.

Hello Claire. As I am typing this I am crying. Do you know what to do when you failed placements in year one? My tutor recommended retrieval placement. Do you know what it is? Please respond .
@ClaireCarmichael2 жыл бұрын
Hi 👋🏻 aw I’m so so sorry about this! I hope you’ll be ok. This is so disheartening. I’m not sure what a retrieval placement is? I’m assuming it’s like a few weeks extra placement to pass? You should be given a second chance? :)

I’m at BCU and it looks like my placement is headed in a bad direction too. I found it difficult but spoke to my tutor who was so understanding but she wants me to involve a few more people and it’s just too much. My tutor recommended trying for extenuating circumstances but with placement instead of assignment… maybe go down this route ?

this carer was really rude to me to point i felt useless i was in surgical ward i usually take only 4 patients but ofcorse we help out with other inbetween also i had to help with admission and preparing patient before surgery. my nurse mentor was really busy she was lovely. i kept on telling myslf its ok the lady just having a bad day but she shouteed at me in front of patients, and constantly pulling me from helping out a patient whom i was in the middle of washing she didnt even knock just to help her make bed. she was complaing, she gave me dead on evils and justt sighing at me constantly , and i ligit told please dont be mad i am trying and but i doing toilliting and pre opperation preparation in between. but every time i tall she kept walking away. i finally had enough this lady went for her break and told me i dont have time to go to mine i asked her to help me out with very heavey patient with transfer, she didnt come. i went to the ward clerk told her and asked to switch sides they tld me its not the first time people say this about this lady its her personality and gave me the option to complain. i said no i didnt want that for a person even when i switched sides of ward she confronted me and said she needs a word with me and why i went crying to the clerk than talking to her i dont knowwhat more i should say to her she kept walking away from me. later on the whole of carers refused to speak to me and they were being overly nice and standing in a group and talking with this lady this lady was openly taling trasjh about me but everyone just ignored it like its normal only person who stood up for me was another student nurse. i really should have given awritten complaint about that lady i reret it. im scared to go anywhere near that ward i hope it dosent happen to another person but as a person with anxiety and depression making me feel useless and telling me rude thing turning others against me i honnestly was feeling really low that day if my mum wasent here to support me told me it wasent my fault because she a nurse and they dont treatthe STN that way i didnt go through with what i was planning that day.

Aw I’m so sorry you’ve had that experience! That’s absolutely awful and very rude and unprofessional of that person to do that to you. You should of filed a report against them at the time :( but at least you know now, so if it ever happens again you can report it straight away! 💙 Keep smiling and keep going. You’re doing brilliantly by the sounds of it! Xx
