Love love love that you made this video and LOVED that you acknowledged the fact that owning a horse for everyone is so different. I've had my horse for just over 5 years now, pay for all my expenses, get to show etc while still being able to save money for a down payment on a house this coming spring. But I also have friends who own horses, spend their money stupidly in the horse world and are in extreme debt. But I definitely think it can be hard at first to adapt to owning if you're just used to leasing/taking lessons but it does get easier with time, as the years go on you start to settle into a routine and know where you can cut corners safely (outdoor vs indoor board, shoes vs barefoot). I completely agree with everything you said!!!

@@annabelalves5091 Bad plan...geldings are so much sweeter. You can easily learn to clean your geldings sheath. It's not a big deal for most good horses. I use a sock on my hand/arm, a commercial sheath cleaner and a hose or a bucket of warm water. They normally don't mind if you're gentle. If they do, you can always pay the vet to do it.

I’d also say where you live is a huge factor in cost. I don’t own a horse but I do take lessons ($65 per lesson which is CHEAP in the Seattle area, most barns are $75-85 per lesson). Boarding is also very expensive here. The barn I ride at charges $850 a month with turnout (which is about the average). It’s one reason as long as I live here, I’ll never be able to own my own horse.

As of right now, I'm just taking lessons once a week but the barn that the lessons are at is very far away from where I live. I wrote a letter to my parents last night, talking about how I think a horse would benefit me. I knew they wouldn't automatically just say "yes", so I had backup. I looked up local barns that don't charge too much for board, and I asked if I could possibly lease a horse over the summer so I could get the swing of things. I haven't showed the letter to them yet, but wish me luck that they will at least consider letting me lease!

Saddles can get very expensive so I recommend looking into hdr saddles because they are affordable but very well made we have one for each horse
@brazenbull6365 жыл бұрын
So what do YOU do that allows you to pay for all this on top of your rent/bills? Dude i know got his horses for about $500 a pop. Keeps em at home and handles all the maintenance himself (except the teeth grinding thing). After the entry cost of the horse/saddle/basic care equipment its around $100-$200 a month in feed. Diy shots are around $60. So i kinda don't get this video. Not saying the following is you (unless it is) but: I see a ton of videos on here where these young females are raving about their horse. Talking about how great yet expensive it is, and how you MUST use X products that end up being only optional and expensive. Then low and behold it becomes apparent that her wealthy father is financing everything 😄 Meanwhile everywhere else in the horse sector of youtube people are spending at least 1/2 as much to own their horse no problem. Keep your horse at home(if you can). Do the shots yourself, and hoovework yourself. Theres a ton of expense doxed right there. Just like everything else, you can make this as expensive as you want...
@mollymckinney11265 жыл бұрын
Brazen Bull ok but if you do the foot work yourself and don’t know what you are doing then you could really damage your horses hoofs but every situation is different some people can have there horses in there back yard other can only afford to keep it at a show barn everyone is different

So what if owning a horse just isn't an option. Are there any other ways I could ride on a regular basis other than going on tourist like trail rides? I live in Northern CA and owning a horse up here isn't very cheap. I've looked into volunteering at ranches but haven't had much luck.

I was lucky. Rented a house on 20 acres, bought hay for winter, only bought grain as a treat. Kept my horse barefoot. Trimmer every 6 weeks for $45. No shavings as I didn't confine my horse to a stall ever. So hay during winter, dewormer every other month, shots once a year, float every 2 years. Waterproof blanket for extreme rainy days. If it was super cold but dry, I left blanket off as his winter coat was perfect.

It depends on what she actually knows, and I am sure she won’t be giving the horse a bad life. You don’t need to know how to ride to own a horse, contrary to certain beliefs. Some people just own horses without riding them, and work them on the lunge I guess 😅 Just because you can’t ride, doesn’t mean the horse you own will lead a sad and unhealthy life. As long as you know the basics of horsecare and do your research, you can have a ver happy equine child

Buying my horse for 500. Boarding is 300, and it's so big and pretty, I can also use their feed for 25$ more 😌 I'm not worrying about a saddle for a few months until I'm sure my horse is ready because she's been in the pasture for 2 years and i know she has some behavioural problems, mostly she just needs some dominant check. She's barefoot which is fine with me because I don't like shoeing [my preference.] I can also use my friends tack for a bit if they fit her as well, but I'm going to be buying hand me down stuff, sale stuff, stuff off Amazon and all that. Ima be a cheap person lmao, and I also am getting a payment plan I pay my vet every month for an amount I choose and incase the horse gets hurt it's already paid for in advance.
@jasonfrost50256 жыл бұрын
TLDR: Horse ownership is as expensive as you make it. If you live in California, you literally have to be rich (or single with no extra expenses, or live at home with parents who already own land, ie rich people). If you have land, it's cheap. If you have to board, it's not cheap. If you don't own a trailer and a truck, it's not cheap. If you own a trailer and a truck, it's still not cheap. Side note: A lot of vets recommend you don't ever clean the sheath; it has protective bacteria, and cleaning it often does more bad than good. Concluding comments: based on my experience over the last 6 months, horse owners are basically the new modern royalty, most of them are 3rd and 4th generation brats who were born into land and ownership, getting into the community is astoundingly difficult, getting into rodeo and finding training is almost impossible if you weren't born into it, and you need money and social status (or you at least need to pretend you have social status and money). Good luck!
@510mundo6 жыл бұрын
It's funny you mention the CA part. I live in nor cal and have always wanted a horse but it's super expensive. To own land around here you have to have a bit of money. I guess I could just take lessons but I don't think it would be even close to having that bond with your own horse.

Okay so, I’m really confused on the boarding thing. If I have my own stable for the horse, do I even need that? What if I am able to care and feed for my horse on my own? Can I just not enter it into a board?
@dancetothebaileybeat28095 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit late You dont need to board your horse as long as you have your own feild, feed room and field shelter. Keep in mind you need to strip graze/rotate fields to avoid turning them to mud. Depending on the size of your property, you may wish to combine your feed and tack rooms. You might also need stables and a straw barn, depending on your horse's requirements. In short, as long as you have enough property/a friend's property, you shouldn't need to board.

I had that weird tingle, and she was an amazing pony overall, so I am going to began my lease in week! I’m so happy! (The horse in my profile pic is a old mare I used to ride and I was going to lease but she was evil). All I have to pay for is boarding fee and lease fee which is 👍👍👍👍👍👍😎.

This video, while very informative, brought me back to reality quicker than you can say 'fiscal responsibilities.'

*PLZ HELP, ANSWER* If I buy a horse, do I need barn and stuff? Or can i just make only a room for the horse ? Is that ok? And where to buy horses? And how much a horse cost?

At my barn boarding is 1200 and it is a very old barn. That’s why it’s really hard for me to buy a horse cuz the price is WAY too high
