Great to hear from a LFS experience since not many of the Rochester Stores get any large clams. I think I agree from my clam gluttony these last few months that the quick acclimation worked best vs the drip acclimation. Yet getting stuff shipped makes it harder still so if you find some locally that's been in the tanks for a little bit you're lucky. Most LFS don't bother feeding so that's a possible risk too. I was told the larger clams are sold cheaper as food grade compared to the small ones are considered ornamental and charged more.
@InappropriateReefer5 жыл бұрын
That's actually super interesting, regarding the larger clams being sold as food grade. I remember hearing that in Japan some restaurants serve these live giant clams as food... the customers would pick one out and the chef would prepare it right away. Just reading this second hand though so I am not sure how true it is, but hey, I believe it since parts of the world eat these!

My last clam purchase was a 7 inch clam for 125 bucks. It was a Tahitian blue maxima and lasted for almost 6 months before my leds bleached the mantel and killed it.
@RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery5 жыл бұрын
Those clams are better than awesome but personally I've kinda given up on clams because every time I take one back it dies after some time. (I've tried two so far) I think I would need to start a separate tank that's completely clean. I'm guessing that since i'm getting them from the ocean, I must either have something in my system that predates on them or I'm bringing them in with parasites on them and in a closed system they can't defend themselves against the predators. Either predatory snails or worms or both - not sure what happened. Good vid!! Waiting for the follow up.
@InappropriateReefer5 жыл бұрын
I feel your frustration as I have lost quite a few clams as well.. are the ones you bring back pretty large? Did they expire right away or lived for awhile? Curious if there's a pattern.
@RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery5 жыл бұрын
@@InappropriateReefer They were both what I would call medium sized (derasa clams) based on other clams in the area. They were about 4.5" (the first one slightly smaller). The first one lived for about 2 months and the 2nd lasted for almost 6 months. Whatever attacked them went in by the foot. I suspect snails. I wonder if there's a way to safely seal the foot of a younger clam without harming it? That way it would be safe.
