I can not explain the emotions and feelings I get listening to this type of music. If there isn't pipe music like this in Heaven,
count me out.
The interviewer is Paddy Glackin, another great fiddle player in his own right.
Leo Rowsome was born in April 1903 in Dublin City into a family with a strong piping tradition. Leo's grandfather, Samuel of Ballintore, Co. Wexford, was a contemporary of Johnny Cash another famous piper, and Leo's father William and Uncles Tom and John were all proficient at the uilleann pipes. The Rowsome house in Harold's Cross was full of music and noise!
Leo's father died in 1928 and Leo himself then took up his father's practice of making pipes. Due to the prevailing economic condition, Leo left school early to commence work at 14 years of age. At the age of 17 in 1920 he commenced teaching in the College of Music and remained there as a part time teacher till his death. Just how many pupils he put through his hands in the 50 years is beyond comprehension. Each pupil had a practice set and manuscript for the music settings. Waltons published a Rowsome Tutor in 1936. Leo married Helena Williams from Taghmon, thus strengthening the strong Wexford link in the family. Leo played in a trio on Radio Éireann in 1920 ( 2RN as it was then known) with Seamus Ó Mathúna, fiddle and Nelius Cronin flute. As a result, he was in much demand all over the country at concert and feiseanna.
He founded Cumann na bPíobarí Uilleann in 1936, which had its headquarters at Árus Ceannt, Thomas Street for many years. Musicians came from all over for Saturday nights sessions and lessons. In association with feis Lár na hÉireann, the Piobairí held the first Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar in 1951, out of which grew CCÉ. Leo also played on Radio Éireann in the 30's in a piping quartet which included Eddie Potts, Tom Rowsome and Michael Padian. Later many others took part, such as Tommy Reck, Willie Clancy, Willie Reynolds, Jim Seery etc. Leo had a workshop attached to his home where he made and repaired pipes. He had clients all over the world and was more interested in seeing pipes being played than in charging too highly for the service. Leo died while adjudicating 'Fiddler of Dooney' competition in Sligo September 1970.
His Music: - Leo's skill in the use of the regulators is evident in the recordings. He provided a continuous rhythmic accompaniment to the melody just like a pianist. His interpretation of the slow air was a moving experience for his listeners while his 'Fox Chase' was considered a masterpiece.
The interviewer is Paddy Glackin, another great fiddle player in his own right.

As a classical pianist, I can't help being always blown away by the complexity of this instrument when I see it played. Synchronizing both hand's fingers that are pressed or released, vibrating or sliding on the holes, along with blowing air in the bag with the bellows on the right elbow, and of course constantly keeping the adequate pressure on the bag with the left arm, oh and yes of course press these keys with the right wrist, ah and I almost forgot, raise or lower the chanter with both hands... and all this keeping the rythm and enchanting us with music deep from the soul.

I saw Liam play with Andy Irving in Hull in about 1970 - I was a folk guitarist at the time, and from an Irish family. The sound of uillean pipes played by Liam or Seamus Ennis still sends a shiver down my spine. I wonder if there are strange ancient forces at work with this instrument.

A most complex instrument indeed. None the less, it has a voice, and i do mean voice, it almost talks in the right hands. A tune played by Davey Spillain "Midnight walker" really brings this home. I find it a little amazing that this small Island is te home to so much in the music world. Let us hope that it never goes out of fashion.

@Offtofott it is the passion, the pride, the courage, and the will of a people that will never die. It is an honor just to listen to the history of a people who were happy with the very little that they had. It is a story of the people who knew the greatest gift in the world was life itself. No matter how hard things got for them they would never give up. It is the moment of joy we get from hearing such a beauty that reminds us that we can never forget where we come from.

When I started playing Uilleann pipes, a full set made by Leo Rosen was around $500 USD, and you could barely give them away at that price. Now days, my set is considered priceless, and full sets made by modern makers will run you around $8000 and up, with, a two-year, plus, wait.

@mwj666 The best old narrow bore sets are regarded as being the best sounding all-around pipes ever developed. Wider bores may have begun in Ireland though, before they took off in America then back to Ireland, maybe never fully debugged. The narrow bore drones are totally scalable to the wide bore sizes, if all proportions are maintained, and modern chanters are improving by leaps and bounds. Liam O'Flynn is a terrifically expressive player!

The rhythm is very special. It is played in 4/4 time with a feeling somewhere in between dotted rhytm and shuffle, though it's usually written out in straight 8th-notes. Also it's played a fair bit slower than a reel. Hope that helps a little bit anyhow.

The starter version of the instrument is home-buildable in alternate construction for the melody pipe, very inexpensive and requiring no special skills or tools. Search around, you'll find enough information. But the reed is tricky, for that you should search for a reed maker. The home build pipe information should include reed data the reed maker can use.
