Clarendon & Murchison Lt Rwy - October 2023 - 16mm G-Scale Live Steam Garden Railway

Welcome to the 2023 Rails in the Garden event at the Clarendon and Murchison Light Railway, a beautiful narrow gauge garden railway in the NSW Southern Highlands. Track gauge is 45 mm, with a scale of 16mm to the foot (1:19) or thereabouts.

Rails in the Garden are a group based in NSW, Australia that meet regularly to run our live steam and battery-electric trains on 32mm and 45mm gauge tracks at events held in member's gardens and at regular indoor exhibition events.
We produce our own quarterly Australian magazine devoted to the garden railway hobby and subscription enquires are welcomed by e-mail: [e-mail].

There are a few named corners also, named after the poor unfortunates who derailed spectacularly on them … but a diamond crossing at the bottom of a 1:30 grade is quite the challenge if someone is coming the other way!

I like how you have a covered area over the steam up bay to keep the sun off you. In the UK as you know Ben, we have them to allow you to dry out a bit. Ha

That’s in our Southern Highlands where it does rain quite a bit, much like at our place, so it works well for both! David has done a great job both with that “platform canopy” and with his “signal box” garden shed at the other end of the line.

Beautiful railway! And beautiful countryside! I've got a question; The Green 0-4-0 side tanker with the Hackworth Valve Gear that leads off the video - who makes this loco? I've been looking for a Hackworth Valve Gear loco for my stable but can't find one anywhere...

Hi, thanks for the kind words! That loco is a Roundhouse Carrie, that particular model is long out of production (it was an update of a Roundhouse Ppoter) but the Hackworth valve gear is still made by Roundhouse (roundhouse-eng.com) and can be purchased by special order - it would probably work with a standard Roundhouse boiler, call them to ask what would be possible, they are very helpful. A small company called DJB Engineering (djbengineering.co.uk) used this Roundhouse valve gear in their model called “Robert”, also sadly out of production. There will be other old models I can’t think of right now as well. Nevertheless do not lose hope! These locos come up for sale fairly often and there are dedicated resellers who can help you find one (eg: anythingnarrowgauge.co.uk) - let one of them know what you’re looking for and patience will probably pay off!
