Don’t know if it will help your friend to know that she’s not alone, but I also have a moderate form of this that has developed recently, also to do with the skin. My GP knows about it, too. I have pretty big scabs that I pick and pick, and I’m worse than Nanny is with what she is like with biting her nails, and the thing is I also bite my nails. It’s definitely an OCD and anxiety thing.

Yes I also have this when my anxiety gets the better of me or when im nervous or when im bored. I cant say why I do it but I do. I used to bite my fingernails. Im glad claire made this video it helps.

I think I have dermatillomania too. I'm 25 now and since high school I've been picking at my lips and the corners of my mouth and the scars would go very far up my face and turn black. I also bit my fingernails and the skin at the tip of my finger. I pulled my hair out only sometimes when I would get extremely stressed.

Hi Clare. My heart goes out to you. I've had trichotillomania since I was 11. I never pulled my head hair but I pulled/plucked everything else. I'm 39 now and am able to better manage it. I know this video is a year or so old but I wanted to thank you for being brave and sharing your experience. I hope many struggling with trich find your video. Much love ❤

It’s ok Clare, I am going to the doctor in July to see if I have the same thing. In October I started pulling out my eyebrows and then eyelashes. It’s nothing to be afraid about. Your not alone. My daughter also has Trichotillomania. Hers started...honestly since she was a baby. At 6 months old, she was pulling hair out of rugs. When she turned 18 months old, I guess she finally realized there was hair on top of her head and she started pulling it out. To the point where she went completely blonde on her right side within a month. We've tried different things to help her, we've done gloves and stuff, but I'm sure I don't have to explain to you how hard it is

Clare, I also have trichotillomania! I started pulling the hairs on my eyebrows off, then my eyelashes, and then from a spot right on the top of my head. You described it very well in the video, where we don’t even really notice it when we’re doing it, and it doesn’t really hurt either. When school photos came I had, no eyelashes, barely any eyebrows, and a big bald spot on the top of my head. It was horrible. That was in sixth grade. When school photos came I cut up my picture to pieces and threw it away and made sure no one spoke about it. I’m doing better now though. Clare, I hope you continue to try and rebuild your confidence with your hair because it makes us all happy when you’re happy. Also, I’m so happy that you posted this video. I felt so alone in this battle with myself. Even now I still struggle with it, not as much as before, but I still am. To know that you, such a big creator, has the same problem as I do really really really helps. Thank you Clare

Amanda Whoop! I went to the doctor and they said I was depressed and there is no way I’m depressed bc I’m such a happy person. Even though I got bullied in school I’m still a happy person I love myself and I will never try to harm myself in anyway other than that I have anger issues😂😂 especially in games. But I don’t cuss bc I was raised right lol

I've pulled all my eyelashes and eyebrows on multiple occasions, eyelashes came out worse for it. I still pull at both unfortunately, but not nearly as much. I think part of the key is confidence and doing something that occupies your hands. Drawing was the only time I wasn't pulling at them.

Omg I too have trichotillomania and have worn wigs! Let me tell you, THEY HELP SO MUCH!!! I was diagnosed when I was 17/18 and then just eventually shaved my head and started wearing wigs. The nervous/ compulsive habit eventually diminished. Now I have hair that i dont obsessively pull out. I catch myself sometimes pulling out a strand or picking my eyebrows and then i have to remind myself what I'm doing and consciously think about not doing it. Lol Also, bullies totally suck. I used to get bullied in school for my weight and my sense of style. *trigger warning* It made me start self-harming and I had done it on and off again until I was about 22 because the bullies words were stuck in my head. Counseling and medications helped immensely and I am happy to say I am now 28, going on 29 and havent harmed myself since. Please please PLEASE dont bully others, and if you see someone being bullied, please step in and say something or at least help aid the person afterwards.

amen to everything you're saying in this video. i had an eating disorder in high school/college as a result of my anxiety/depression -- i completely understand how the stressors in our lives can lead us to do harmful things to ourselves. of course you've been told a million times you're gorgeous. i'm sure, like me, you have trouble believing it. but i always do better with compliments unrelated to my looks that then help me eventually build confidence about my appearance, so: you're a very talented story teller; you're personality is terrific on camera; you're an interesting woman with huge appeal. I didn’t even know there was a name for this... I’ve been doing this since I was in high school on and off too. I’m the worst with my eyelashes. I didn’t make the link with anxiety till you said that’s a trigger and now it makes sense.
