Thanks, Nancy, that's really helpful. Despite playing clarinet for a few years decades ago I don't recall ever learning how to tune my clarinet -so now I know! Really useful as I've just taking it up again and joined an orchestra. Now I've downloaded an excellent free tuning app onto my phone, so I've no excuse for playing flat.

Can you give a link to part 2? Also, what techniques for correcting very flat on low notes beyond lip it up? (Bass clarinet)

Thank you! My friend said my clarinet is flat and told me to tune it but I didn't know how. I used a tuner on my iPad but it said I was in tune.

Use your ears! - not false electronic tuners. A good one will cost about $1,200 or so. Don't rely on the cheep imitations.

Hi Jaime. Maybe your friend is sharp or maybe your electronic tuner is wrong. Mr. Dougherty is right for an electric tuner is actually only correct on two notes: A and D# (tritone). The others can be off by quite a bit. You can check pitch with your friend. Both tune to concert A with the meter and have your friend play a long tone at that pitch and you play one octave lower and higher. How do you sound? Then have your friend play the same pitch and you play a fifth higher and lower. How do you sound. Then reverse the rolls and evaluate.

Nice opening video for a very important subject. Checking the different registers with each other is great. WATCH OUT though! We should not tune our instruments to Equal Temperament (ET) or use electronic ET tuning devices or computer programs. No wind, string or choral ensemble known to man performs ET. It is a deceptive reference. These mentioned ensembles are indeed better references.

For fun...try listening to the video while watching a tuner. Also...open G makes sense for first step....but to me low G for second...and tuning low G with barrel both make no sense.

I have a question , when I play or practice outside, the wind catches and I lose sound, , what can I do to prevent this?

Yes. I always believe that if you have a premium instrument the correct tuning has been engineered into it . That's what the manufacturers of the leading high end brands do . ONLY slight adjustment with barrel or new mouthpiece & reed combo. Can't see how you can justify mucking around like this when you pay $5K or more.
