I love the hard cut between Ambrose justifying the bending of monastic rules and *"A Month Later."*

Fabulous story, really enjoyed it. But I especially liked the happy ending!

I didn't find the ending that happy: man of God leaves faith and is deceived by a witch, thus failing to stop a time-travelling devil worshiper impersonating a bishop. It's like the "doesn't matter, had sex" meme.

Yeah, this is a really bleak ending. The sorceress is just as selfish as the sorcerer.

So, the most horrible fate the evil Wizard could think of was to send the guy back in time to meet his ex-wife. Brutal.

I think the desired outcome was Ambrose being sacrificed by druids, not hooking up with his ex-lover. Moriamis seems to have been just passing by when her attention was caught by the clamor... and the hotness of the intended victim. I mean, I suppose Azedarac might have intended that outcome, but it seems a little iffy. Mind you, if Azedarac's solution to the problem posed by Ambrose was "Send him back in time to get his ashes hauled" it's hard to see Azedarac as all that evil. I mean, Ambrose was intending to serve Azedarac up to the "justice" of the Medieval Catholic Church, who'd subject him to a lot worse than the quick death the druids were about to mete out to Ambrose. Just sayin'.

By the way, this is an awesome work of bringing Mr. Smith's stories into audio!

This guy is uploading the work of others. Check out "Collected Fantasies of Clark Ashton Smith" on Audible. Actual voice artists self-produced it and this is just stealing from people who already are wildly underpaid for the effort they put in. It's just sad.

This story is genius! And its the epidemy of "The Sworn Book of Honorius" for those who have read that manuscript's introduction.

What a great adventure

Yes it is. I love the way how our good monk is deliberately send to the wrong time by the good and wise sorceress. A great tale of Religion and Sorcery that has a happy end... (which it usually hadn't, usually it ended at the stake in a "Auto Da Fe"). Glad you liked it and all the best from Holland.

Haha, I wish I had a loving wife like this, too!

quite a happy ending. listening to his stories, i get the feeling CAS had quite a few pent up fantasies about women. nice to find a bit of a nod to 'rumpy pumpy ' after the totally celibate, monk like stories of hp lovecraft

You're absolutely right there. You should read "The disinterment of Venus" . (about monks who discover a very beautiful statue) I'll see if I can upload it and thanks for your reaction.

I notice that the protagonist is named Ambrose. Was CAS making a sly reference to Matthew Lewis's "The Monk" I wonder?

For Ubbo-Sathla is the source and the end. Before the coming of Zhothaqquah or Yok-Zothoth or Kthulhut from the stars, Ubbo-Sathla dwelt in the steaming fens of the newmade Earth: a mass without head or members, spawning the grey, formless efts of the prime and the grisly prototypes of terrene life … And all earthly life, it is told, shall go back at last through the great circle of time to Ubbo-Sathla. The Book of Eibon

Oh come now! The last sentence.. pure poison! It ruins a magnificent ,if irrational tale. The whole tale is absurd! Not the bishop is into sorcery part, that one happened.-- Many men of the church were into the sciences, sorcery for their political opponents in the church--, the time travel part, the enchantress falling in love wit the monk part .. It as if it mocks a certain genre, by imitating it.
