I just recently stumbled across this very funny movie from 1959 with Clark Gable, Lilli Palmer and Carroll Baker. I thought Gable was fantastic in this movie, very funny and it's totally worth watching it.

I love this film. Lilli Palmer was absolutely delightful.

Youth is not a matter of age but a matter of spirit and this man had it all the way to the end. And his secret was his zest for life,

Cobb says "welcome to the club" to Gable. He was actually ten years younger!

Doesn’t look bad for 58 - definitely still recognisably Clark Gable in looks and demeanour, they smoked like chimneys and drank like fish + probably didn’t wear sunscreen often back then too

Charles Lane (seen at 0.36) made his last performance in 2006, aged 101.

I'm nearly 20 years older than the 'Gable' of this picture but I don't think I look that old: maybe it was all the obligatory drink and smokes that did him in, and maybe the pressures of high-profile acting (for big money).

I think people back then simply looked older than we do today in general. But his Lifestyle was probably a factor. Especially in his death

Clark Gable born 1901. Lilli Palmer born 1914. Carroll Baker born 1931.

Carroll Baker found this role to be a real comedown after being Oscar nominated for “Babydoll.” She eventually bought herself out of her long term contract with Warner Bros.

I think being in a movie with the great Clark Gable and this very fine cast has a positive affect on ones acting career.

Sounds like Carroll Baker was pretty delusional...I didn't even know who she was in this film clip, although I know who ALL the other people in this video are. She must've thought she was better than everyone. Well, she wasn't.

There's a Gable, Tracy movie where they both are grey and sitting crying in there tea, can not think of the title, ever see that one?

I don't think so but, from the three movies they made together, I only saw one unfortunately. And that was 'San Francisco' and I can't recall a scene like that in there so it must have been either 'Boom Town' or 'Test Pilot'?! It's very difficult to get one of those movies here in germany :( I'd really like to see them.

I can not find it, I just saw that one scene, years ago. He's a great actor, that went through a lot of personal grief. 'Some time I'll find you,' when Lombard was killed. Harlow died towards the end of filming 'Saratoga,' and they used her double for the last scenes, only showing her from the back. I just think he was terrific.

You're remembering something wrong. Tracy/Gable only did three films together: San Francisco, Test Pilot, and Boomtown, all made close together when they were in their mid-late 30's. Of the three, Gable's only "crying" scene was in Test Pilot, at the very end, which was played with Lionel Barrymore.

Well, watah yea know..............a movie that really shows the actual problems that Gable was having with studios casting him with young leading ladies. It was just 10 years earlier that he was miscast (age wise but not talent wise) in a movie called, "Any Number Can Play'. And there were others BUT, his last film with MM was perfectly cast. It still didn't matter to Gable though, he could fake it no matter how old he got and how young they were. He should have lived longer though. There was a movie made with Peter O'Tool when he was looking like a skeleton and OLD called "Venus". I did like it though. It made a really sad and pathetic attempt at what an old man desires in his mind but can't live in reality.

Why do you say he was miscast in Any Number Can Play? That was a very good and entertaining film, and in my opinion he was perfectly cast.

I read that Gable didn’t want to play the romantic parts with too young an actress. Joel McCrae felt the same way.

After he lost Lombard, he seemed to age badly. Drinking and smoking didn’t help.
