Well most parents don't expect their children to leave home without a word for 12 years. That must of been pretty devastating for Martha Kent. Glad the new version altered that bit of storyline. It was kind of cruel.

One of the best scenes in the entire movie. The music, the cinematography, the acting... The little touch of Ma Kent having to hug Clark a second time is like a gut-punch. Snyder even gave this scene a little nod in Man of Steel where Clark returns home. When the two hug, Clark releases himself from the hug early on, but Ma Kent holds on so he gives her a second hug. Such a motherly thing to do.

Yes indeed. I noticed the similarity when watching Justice league. Snyder did a number of respectful things to both Superman and Michael Keatons Batman with a free bars from the original themes to both of those movies as well as these scene as you pointed out, though it was no where near as powerful as I would have loved in Justice league. Diane lane should have run up and clutched onto Clark as ma Kent did in this scene to, especially after losing him for months and expecting to never see him again. But then so few actors or directors today can REALLY capture the feel, emotions and power in scenes like this people really want to see anymore.

Such a simple scene and every line has a purpose. In just a couple lines, a couple shots and a simple score Donner conveys so much emotional content. Sometimes it's the small things. Look at Thaxter's eyes when she looks out the window. It conveys her love of her son, and the slight smile too where she knows it's time for him to find himself. His destiny. It's a very human thing that every mother goes through letting their children go...for better or worse to find their own way. That's what this cast and crew NEVER lost sight of: The Humanity all around.

Since it is rather popular to accuse Williams of "stealing", my hackles rise when people make unqualified statements about how something Williams wrote is some other composer's work. But what Williams wrote for Superman is Williams. He used the Copland style to give his score a communicative flavor, but Williams' music is original right down to how he uses his borrowed elements of style. It's never all that important that Williams took inspiration from some other composer's work, it's always that he made such thoughtful, powerful, and original use of the materials. I went and listened to The Soundtrack Show to hear for myself what the argument re: Copland was, and was pleasantly surprised. That guy understands Williams better than anyone else I've run into.

Man of Steel in its own way tries for a similar-but-different gravitas to the one that Donner gave this movie, and mostly succeeds. Movies that don't have CGI seem to have a better message than those that have. This brings more tears to my eyes than the Man of Steel even though the Man of Steel had more action, this had more emotion.

It's a pity that this was pretty much the last we saw of Martha in the films. We know she's still alive when Clark joins the Planet (he sends half his paycheck to her), so there was plenty of room for her to appear again. While Phyllis Thaxter was semi-retired after this, she lived all the way into the 2000s (so did Glenn Ford, funnily enough).

The most beautiful scene of any superhero movie. It would be great in any type of movie. The music, the cinematography, the script, the editing, the acting. The dog running out to meet him in the corn field. Her look that says she knows what is going on. That double hug at the end, she grips him so tight you believe even Clark couldn’t break that grip of a mother’s impossible love. I thought it was incredible.

For my grandparents ~ One died the very year this film was released, leaving the family in shambles. It wasn’t until my grandfather took his children to see this film mere weeks later, that they were inspired to keep on living. The other, my grandfather, kept on going until November 9th 2020. He was Superman to me.

I just watched this movie last night. I had a feeling I'd like it, but now I can say I genuinely believe this is the best superman movie. The one of "my generation" is actually Superman Returns, not Man of Steel. But I don't think either hold up to this. Obviously the special effects are dated, but these characters are great, the dialogue is well-written and powerful. Gene Hackman was mostly a good time, but I thought he was menacing particularly when he talks to superman on that super high frequency, and when he meets him in his lair. I think the emotion that Reeves shows before he flies around the world is pretty powerful. And 6'4 225 is still jacked, I don't care what they say about modern movie standards. TLDR - this feels like an actual quality film. The other ones are just common super hero movies, canned and unoriginal.

I was not amuzed at Superman Returns. Never saw it again after the theatrical release. No character, too much CGI, nothing personal, just like that dumb Poseidon remake in 2006. This 1978 original, which I've seen more than 30 times, dated or not, is a total, timeless masterpiece! It will standout as the best Superman ever created. This is one of many touching scenes that prove it. RIP Christopher Reeve.

This is a scene cinematography was invented for. The complete tragedy of Superman can be seen here through Geoffrey Unsworths eyes and can be heard by John Williams talent. I'm so thankful that I was born early enough to watch this movie in a big theater, when it was released the first time...
