Studying japanese as a chinese person is pretty confusing when it comes to kanji. Being chinese I can understand even the hardest kanji (the chinese meaning), but I can't read most of them in japanese :( I tried minna no nihongo as a solo learner but it was pretty daunting, switched to genki and I love it.

+BGM Hi BGM, I can only imagine the frustration. My native language is English, and I'm having a tough time. I tried my hand at Mandarin Chinese and didn't stick with it as long as I have Japanese. The characters used in the class I took were very daunting and I struggled a lot. Even though I have 11+ years of Japanese. I still have so many kanji to learn. It is a never ending task. I'm glad you were able to find a textbook that suited you. And thank you for sharing your experience here. Best wishes as you move forward with your studies.

in chinese, we have a lot of words with same words but different pronunciations, that shouldnt be a problem with kanji in the first place, try this, read pure hiragana when you have learn a few japanese kanji, you will never want to read full hiragana again, because you have to figure out the meaning, and all the ambiguities, but for kanji, it carries meaning and you dont have to think further it’s meaning

krayziesensei Hello, I just got back from Japan, and you are right, they do tend to use that book rather than alternatives. I was in intermediate and low advanced classes, so we did not use Minna, we used 中級へ行こう & 中級を学ぶ. As I said, either book is fine, these are just problems that I had with the books from both a teachers standpoint, and a learners standpoint. And each person must choose the book that is best for them. That said, Minna is a great way to go if you don't mind all the books that come with it, and you don't mind the constant back and forth between books.

Yay! I'm so glad! I do think that Minna stepped up and made a superior 中級 book. Genki is better, in my opinion, for elementary levels stuff, but the middle level "Genki" book is probably one of my least favorites. But that middle Minna book is awesome. Though, honestly, the entire middle level was just a trash fire for me. It was really hard and I still struggle with a lot of the mid-level grammar.

+Drake Chung Have you tried the 中級みんなの日本語?www.amazon.com/Minna-Nihongo-Intermediate-Level-Textbook/dp/488319468X I think it is very good. There is also Tobira, which many universities use as their intermediate book. I think it's a bit advanced, but it is a solid book. www.amazon.com/Tobira-Japanese-English-Mayumi-Oka/dp/4874244475/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1456682876&sr=1-1&keywords=Tobira You can always do 中級へ行こう Or 中級を学ぼう www.kinokuniya.com/us/index.php/fbs003?common_param=9784883194476 平井悦子 is a common author between Minna and the 中級を学ぼう book. My university in Japan used 中級へ行こう & 中級を学ぼう and I was very pleased with both books. 中級へ行こう is a bit harder to find, but there is a pdf floating around. I don't know why that one is so hard to locate. But it is. I hope one of these will suit your needs. Let me know if you need more help.

I studied in class with the Genki book and got confused with a lot of grammatical aspects. It doesn't have the best order. With the Covid thing I decided to order Minna and... Many things finally started to make sense to me. Been self studying for about 2 months now and... I feel that everything I've learned with Genki in the classroom finally fits somewhere.

There is a book for the answers for the genki series. it "just" costs money. So there are two more books. I personally think if you want to start with japanese... genki is the best bet. It depends on the person, though.
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
+MrsNekoful Yes, this has been discussed in other threads. However, unlike with Minna no Nihongo the answer book is not included. And many times is difficult to find. Which is why I did not include it as a pro for Genki. I really like Genki, but its lack of answer keys that accompany the text is a real bummer. Not only that, I find that the answer booklet is hard to use if you aren't proficient in Japanese. So a beginner is up a creek so to speak. And the Answer book is actually only 1 book for both texts and workbooks. In that respect, Genki did it right. So really, there would only be one more book for Genki totaling 5. I was looking for good textbooks to self-stydy Japanese from the beginner's level and aim to get N3 in 2 years. I was initially planning to go with the Minna no Nihongo series, but soon found out that it involves just too many books, and the lack of a classroom makes it kinda difficult to study. A friend recommend Genki to me but I wasn't sure how good it is comparing to the trusted Minna series. Then I found this video! Thank you Liz for the detailed comparisions!!! I am more certain to pick up the Genki series now~~!!! It was a very helpful video! I have subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to learn more from you. Thank you very much!!! ^^~

Im on chapter 3 of Genki - i like it. been studying on and off for about 4 weeks now. I know the hiragana and just about the katakana. and the first 36 kanji from Heisigs book. Do you think I should power through Genki 1? Or spend more time and learn ALL the 300 kanji, THEN continue Genki or mix Kanji and Genki as I go along (would rather not do this!). and .. after Genki 1 .. would I be able to speak basic japanese if I visit japan in 6 months
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 10 жыл бұрын
Hello, I would suggest you work on kanji as you go. I know this is not what you want to hear, but it will be better in the long run if you do. However, there is no right or wrong way to study a language. So find the way that works best for you. :) I would say in 6 months, you will know the super basics. And it will not be enough to really interact with natives. But it may be enough to get around. I would suggest completing as much of Genki 2 as you can before you go. The language barrier is quite steep from what the books teach, and actually using the language. But it can be done. Best of luck!

Some people say Genki is for English natives, and Minna no Nihongo is for everyone else whose native language isn't English. I also heard that Minna no Nihongo has such exercises that remind us previous learned materials. What do you think?
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 10 жыл бұрын
Well, I think that there is probably some basis in truth. Genki is in Japanese and English. And Minna No Nihongo allows you to buy the grammar notes in other languages. I would also point out, that you can't really progress in a language without going back over previous material. Genki does that for you as well, but it isn't always blatant about it. I think, if you need to use a text with a different language, say Spanish is your native language, then Minna No Nihongo might be a very good option for you. :D But at the end of the day it all comes down to preference and motivation. Best of luck choosing your textbook!

In short: Genki is good for native English speakers. It could do for an English answer key, an easier first chapter, and more entertaining stories towards the back. It has great characters, cultural reading, and nice pacing when learning grammar. Mina no hongo ; No English without a second book in your native language, abbreviated grammar designations (n for noun, adj. fit adjective, etc.), two books open ask the time, more expensive for used books.

I've had Japanese in college and I am now doing some self study to try and get better at it. I've done Rosetta Stone Japanese as a review and I am now progressing my way through the Japanese for Busy People series. I've heard if you manage to absorb all of it you could theoretically pass JLPT N3. I'm just curious to know what I should be doing next after the Japanese for Busy People Series. I'm not sure if you heard of that series but I'm just wondering if you could give me some ideas on what to do next. I thought about hiring a tutor for some conversation practice but I would like to exhaust myself in self study before I do something like that. I thought about doing Genki or Minna no Nihongo but I imagine most of that would probably feel like a review for me and not teach me many new things.

I will be doing a video on the intermediate level books when I return to the USA. I think you're best bet for the next book to use would be actual JLPT books and focus on those areas if that is what you are aiming for. @japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
Asia Experience Hello, I will not be doing a review of "Japanese For Busy People" because I do not have a copy of it. I try to only review books that I have used. If I come across a copy for real cheap or can find one at a library I would be happy to do that. As far as "Tobira" goes, I will be reviewing that book with my other intermediate/advanced books. I would not even begin to compare "Tobira" to "Genki". Genki and JfBP are both meant for beginners. If you complete either series you will be able to take the N4. However, Tobira is a completely different animal. It expects you to have the basic foundation of Japanese language. I would never suggest Tobira to someone looking for a beginning textbook. You simply cannot do it. I think in the opening flap of Tobira it says you need to be familiar with a minimum of 300 or so Kanji that you will get in Genki or Minna no Nihongo. I can't speak for JfBP because I've not actually used it myself, so I don't know how many kanji you learn. I will be working on a video that will cover all of my intermediate books and a second on my advanced books. So I guess my question for you is are you a beginner or are you more intermediate? Personally, I think that Tobira is a great book, but I would put it in the Advanced level not the intermediate level. It is very difficult.

I have katakana left, wish me luck :p I think I will buy the workbook,thank you for your video and your reply^^ Also when you learn kanji do you also learn the stroke order? I know you are supposed to learn some kanji in each lesson but does the book actually show you how to write them?

神光悪魔闇 You do have to put a bit of time into learning the hiragana and katakana before you can use just about any beginner textbook on the market. You have to have it all memorized by the time you hit chapter 2 in Genki. If you learn 5 at a time, you should be able to learn the whole alphabet in a week maybe two. This is the absolute beginner textbook, there is nothing more basic. If you are more interested in a romanji textbook (and I do not recommend them) then you might want to check out something like Japanese for Busy People, romanji version. www.amazon.com/Japanese-Busy-People-Romanized--ROMAN/dp/B008KVTMEQ/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472502210&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=Japanese+for+busy+people+romanji

@ΜαρίαΠ. Sorry this isn't a linked in comment, for somereason my computer isn't letting me do that. You do not need the workbook, you can obtain a number of good worksheet pages from the internet to learn hiragana in either book. However, I would recommend that you get the workbook. The material inside will be aimed at the same things your learning from the books. And you will have to put in a lot of independent learning time to get the writing systems down.

I have just finished japanese for busy people 1 which i enjoyed but it doesn't go into a lot of grammar, i am now deciding what to go onto next as i want to work towards my n4 exam. what book out of all the ones you have used would you recommend? i have liked the look of genki but just was wondering in your opinion which you would find best? I self study but meet with a japanese teacher fortnightly to go over any points although this feels more of a general discussion than actually learning in depth :-(
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
Holly Wickham Hi Holly, Thanks for asking. The first thing I would recommend is going to the JLPT website and taking the mock exam they have up. That should tell you where about you are in your studies. www.jlpt.jp/e/samples/n4.html I would say that if you struggle with that, you would want to get Genki 1 and go over any of the grammars that you missed out on in JfBP. I did look through a copy of JfBP and I think that you covered quite a few of the same grammar points as Genki one. If you feel pretty good about the mock exam I would think you could start Genki 2. I also need to know a few more things about you. Which volume of Japanese for Busy People did you use? (I assume you did kana, but I need to know.) I am assuming that you can read and write both hiragana and katakana. Can you read and write kanji? (Maybe this sounds absurd, but I've been taking and teaching classes for years, and students skip learning the kanji. They depend on the furigana. It gets them through the class, but it won't get them through the JLPT.) Is the JLPT N4 your end goal? I assume you will want to continue after that, but sometimes JLPT books are better than textbooks depending on your final goal. I have lots of JLPT books that I can suggest. My honest recommendation for you would be to stay with JfBP and finish that series out. But if you really want to make the switch because you are unsatisfied with any aspect of the text, Genki is a fabulous book to switch to. Especially for the self-learner. I think the grammar explanations are great for English speaking students. However, if English is not your native language, you might be more comfortable with Minna No Nihongo which comes in several languages including Spanish, and I believe Mandarin Chinese. Get back to me and I'll do my best to help you find the textbook that suits your needs. :D 頑張れ!

JapanesewithLiz Thank you so much for getting back to me and giving me such great advice. I have the kana version, i liked it but grammar is not really explained very well in it which can be frustrating and i can feel misconceptions happening every so often which means i am not always perfect with the particles. I also have read reviews of the second book where they have said they don't prepare you as well for the jlpt as other books do. i am about n5 at the moment, but i was going to wait and take my n4 exam dec 2016 instead of doing both (i have to travel quite far to get there so it saves money). I am learning Kanji on the side as jfbp doesn't use it at all so i feel a bit behind with it but i know roughly half for the jlpt5 now and have been playing a jlpt app where i have to practise how to put the kanji together. I do also have minna 1 which i am starting to look at but find it slightly daunting (my tutor is going to look at it with me to help me work through it), i am hoping that by working through it, it will consolidate what i already know whilst i am taking my next steps with a further text book. I would like to pretty much work my whole way through to N1 eventually so i am interested in the JLPT books as i haven't heard of them. Any advice on how to get there would be great! Thank you! English is my first language :-)

I've been looking for someone who is familiar with them who could provide some info/comparison in regards with Minna no Nihongo (or even comparing old Nihongo no Kiso with Shin Nihongo no Kiso); and/or tell me if it's doable to go from MNN Shukyuu 1 to SNNK 2... Anyway, thanks for the videos! It's been really interesting to see your comparisons. :)

Hi, Sorry for the late reply. I am not familiar enough with Shin Nihongo no Kiso to really compare it. I've only ever looked through it. But I'm sure it's a good book since it has recently been updated and is still in print. I wish you the best on your language learning journey.

Hello, I'm in a bit of a strange situation and I was wondering if you might have some advice. I'm currently a university student and need to take 4 language classes. Some shenanigans happened and I had to skip Japanese 1020 and am trying to self study over the summer break to fill the gap between 1010 and 2010. My university uses the Nakama 1 Third edition I think thats the equivalent of Nakama 1 and 2 in earlier editions. Currently I'm looking at the second edition of Genki and Minna no Nihongo. They both include audio now and Minna is about $20 less than genki. Which one do you think would be better for a cram session of 2 months?
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
Angela Bentle I would suggest that you use Genki in this instance. The grammar is right there, and the books do not require the flipping that Minna does. Because of the convenience of Genki, and how comprehensive the NEW edition is, I highly recommend it for a quick cram session. I think Minna requires a bit more diligence. And if you have the time to devote either is a good option. But because you are in a bit more of a hurry, I would suggest that you use Genki. Nakama is a good series, but not used often. I also have that series in digital format. How do you like it?
@CrescentDolluwu

I enjoy the book it's perfect in a classroom setting. But the online features are only accesible when enrolled in a class which makes self study difficult. The vocabulary list is a good size at the begininng of each chapter and is all vocabulary is used equally througout the chapter using the text, audio and workbook.
@japanesewithliz9103

Angela Bentle Hum... I was unaware of that with Nakama. I will have to consult my professor and find out if he knows anything about the online content. I'm glad the book is balanced. That is super important for the reinforcement of material. Best of luck to you Angela. Please do not hesitate to stop by with more questions as you progress. :D I have new videos coming soon!

Any recommendations for books that teach kanji in radical form? Why is this best? :) im just a beginner (I know the kana) and I know that it's best if I don't learn kanji just yet, but just so I know? Love your videos, thanks :)
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
Jem Cranson Hi Jem, To answer your first question, I think learning the radical forms of kanji make putting the kanji together easier. If you know that the three marks on the side of a kanji --> 港 mean water, then you know that this kanji has something to do with water even if you don't know what it means. This specific kanji means harbor. I also think that it makes learning some kanji much easier. Of course this method is not fail proof, and some of the kanji will not fit neatly into each category. And this way won't work for everyone. But, there are mnemonics which I also think are the bees knees! There are two books that I highly recommend for learning kanji. The first is: www.amazon.com/Kanji-Look-Learn-Eri-Banno/dp/4789013499/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1437156300&sr=1-1&keywords=kanji+look+and+learn&pebp=1437156301528&perid=1XMNEVBQC1GWS2ARQQVH This book breaks down the kanji, and it gives you little pictures to associate even the most difficult kanji with. I love that about this book. The workbook is a MUST if you are going to go with this text. There are few, if any, exercises inside the actual text and the workbook is essential. The second book that I recommend is: www.amazon.com/Basic-Kanji-Book-Vol-1/dp/4893580914/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1437156388&sr=1-1&keywords=basic+kanji+book+vol.+1&pebp=1437156388996&perid=0599TSMTM441Q377KENP This book I used when I was attending a university in Japan. It has a lot of practice and vocabulary that you will pick up. One thing I really like about this book is that it tries to cover both the onyomi and the kunyomi. Basically these are the different ways to pronounce a kanji. And some kanji have a million pronunciations. So I find that handy. I also like that it makes you review all the kanji over and over and over and over. The one problem I have with this book is that after about lesson 7, it stops giving you pictures to associate your kanji with. But it breaks things down or you which redeems it. For example, lesson 8 is all about adjectives, and 9 is all about verbs, and 10 is all about kanji that deal with "time". For some people this will be fantastic. For others they may be better served with the visuals of look and learn. So you need to identify if you are a visual learner or not. :) Finally, I haven't used this book before, but I really like the way it is set up because it breaks it down by radical. I try not to recommend books that I haven't used before because I don't feel I can give as good of feedback about the text but if I were in the market for a new kanji book I would pick this one up in a heart beat. The only thing that I would hedge on is that I don't see any writing practice in the text. www.amazon.com/Remembering-Kanji-Complete-Japanese-Characters/dp/0824835921/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1437156645&sr=1-3&keywords=kanji&pebp=1437156646840&perid=1Q750Y2Z653YGNGB0QBP Since you are new I would suggest maybe using one of the two above texts I mentioned. The third I think you should look at and decide if you are interested in maybe pursuing it for more advanced kanji. Personally though, Basic Kanji will walk you through 500 kanji in book 1, 500 kanji in book 2, 1000 kanji in book 3, and 1000 kanji in book 4. The Japanese government requires its school students to know somewhere around 2,000 kanji. This series takes you 1000 more. Look and Learn will only teach you around 300. But its a starting point. Take a look at those books and if you have any further questions please feel free to ask!

+Madake Hello, No, I did not include the intermediate books in this video. I will be doing intermediate books in a different video in the future. Yes, Genki 1 & 2 covers mostly the same grammar points. Minna no Nihongo has a few more grammar points than Genki does. But I have never really found myself at a disadvantage to those who did Minna no Nihongo as their primary textbook. The intermediate books for both series cover vastly different grammar. I like Minna no Nihongo chyukyu more than the book that was made by the folks at Genki for intermediate learners. But I will delve more into this with my next video.

I still don't know what to use. I'm currently using japanese for busy people, and the way they teach is suited for me (except for some lessons, vocabs were too much sometimes, and some grammars that weren't be used forever in the book, but otherwise it's great for me). I'm a self-learner, and when I saw these Genki and MNN i was like what in the world? How can I use this? We used Genki in class last year (for about 3months) but I didn't even read it because on JFBP it already covered all of them, which is too bad. Help me, what book is good of self-learn w/ and not sabotaging the students too much on vocabs? I want some kind of JFBP type, like it starts w/ a conversation w/c is totally what the lesson is talking about. Giving you simple grammar in 1 lesson to complex one.

3 of your 4 cons about Minna no Nihongo were about the same problem?
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
+haaruukaax No, to recap the problems I had with Minna are 1.) Minna uses immersion, which I don't like. There is no English anywhere in the books. And that makes it difficult for home study unless you want to spend a good chunk of money on the English translation guide. 2.) It is EXPENSIVE. Especially when you start factoring in the cost for each book you have to purchase. Even the OLD editions are still expensive. 3.) This series is not suited for home study. 4.) Abbreviations of parts of speech is a huge con. 5.) Having to use more than one book at a time during study sessions is cumbersome and annoying.

@japanesewithliz9103

Hi, Thanks for the question. Kaiwa is tricky since neither has a real emphasis on this. What you need is a language partner. I would suggest that you use italki for this. You can find tutors for a minimal price, or free on italki. :) I think that the few exercises that are in Genki are really great. But unless you have someone to talk to, you're in a tough situation. I would highly recommend Genki over Minna. :) If you have further questions please do not hesitate to ask. I'm currently in Japan and would be more than happy to go to a bookstore and look at their kaiwa books for you and see if there is something that might benefit you. What is your level? Are you a complete beginner? Do you know the writing systems? Do you know a little bit of Japanese? Let me know. :)

Thank you Liz, you're really kind :) Actually I've been "studying" japanese for 6 or 7 years (I don't realy remember anymore). I used to be a really lazy student and the book my teacher was using was terrible (almost no exercises, no kaiwas, only big texts that I had to translate, then sentences to show the grammar part). So yeah, that's why I'm starting from the beginning. Actually I got the lesson 1 from minna no nihongo and I liked it, it reminded me a lot of the JLPT, maybe I'll only get the genki workbook to practice with more exercises, so using both books. I also got a private teacher, so now we are discussing what type of material we should use on class (rn we are trying manga, since most of my English I learned through it), but we'll probably get something to try N3. Thank you again

I completely agree. I was lucky and got to take Japanese in high school for 4 years, and then again in college for 4 years, and do a 6 month study abroad. So I've become very familiar with a variety of textbooks and materials. And I've totaled about 10 total years of study, some of them self study. And finding a good book, at the intermediate and advanced levels is a nightmare. I've gone through several. >< And I'll be honest, I don't like the way the upper level "genki" books go. But I'll save this criticism for my video! :D

There isn't much of a difference. You'll learn a few different grammar points, but I'd say 95% of it will be the same stuff. It might be introduced at different times. But I haven't examined the texts that closely. I know people who have used both, and I can speak with them easily. So I don't think it matters which one you start with. They are both excellent books and you should be able to work with your friend. She should know how to do all the grammars you are going to start with. And like I said, she might know 1 or 2 others that Minna covers. But when its all said and done, you'll know everything you need as a beginner from either book. Good luck! :)

Hi! Unfortunately I've never used Japanese from Zero. So I don't want to speak on its behalf. I do have their sister book Korean from Zero and I like that quite a bit. Especially with the online videos they do. I watch the online vids from Japanese with zero and I think they are really solid vids. So I IMAGINE the book is also a good place to start. At least until you feel you can afford Genki or Minna. Japanese from zero runs about $13.00 on Amazon. If you pick up the old edition of Genki USED you can get it for about $10.00 plus shipping which puts you at $13.99 roughly. Obviously this figure will change as people buy and sell product there. But it is going for a pretty reasonable amount for the old edition. However, if you really want Japanese from Zero, go with that book. You'll learn best out of the book that you're most interested in. And you can always buy a different book if the one you pick isn't living up to your standards. And as always, check with your local library. They may not have the book on the floor, but I bet the librarians will know how to get it. That is a great way to preview a book before you buy it. I have done that myself with the advanced level books. :) www.amazon.com/Integrated-Course-Elementary-Japanese-English/dp/4789009637/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1505767294&sr=8-11&keywords=Genki

You can find the answer book for download online for the old edition. It shouldn't matter though. The questions are mostly the same. The big differences are that instead of using the word video, or cassette tape, the change the language to DVD and CD. I don't think I noticed much beyond that. And Genki is loads cheaper. However, if you really want the answer booklet then I recommend that you get Minna No Nihongo. Both are great books and you can't go wrong with either. Unfortunately, Minna is a bit more expensive.

I can stop by a bookstore and take a peek at the teaching guide if I find it. Honestly, I'd look for a copy online. :) I'm sure that you could get an idea of what using the book would be like. Maybe use amazon.co.jp to find it. Did you use the intermediate Minna no Nihongo book? I have it and will review it before I take the N2. I've been using Tobira as my advanced book. JapanesewithLiz My university call it advanced, but really I dont feel anywhere near ''advanced'' lol. I had two elementary, two intermediate classes and then one advanced. Because I'm not in Japan, it's hard to really improve because immersion is really the best to learn a langage. I have a really bad memory so it's quite hard. At school we used Minna no nihongo. So we finished until chapter 33. My teacher was really nice but bad to explain things. I feel like Minna no nihongo often lack of grammar explainations. I'm someone who need a lot of exemples and explaination and practice to understand...so I usually go on internet to have supplemental explanations. Oh yes, if you pass by a library and think to look for the answers key book ...please tell me if all the answers are there. It's quite annoying to have exercices but no answers key. But I never tried it because by the time they were really going I was already in advanced level materials. However, I think that if you are interested you should give it a try. Last I knew, they had a trial period where you could look stuff over before buying the whole thing. I hope this helps. They also approve of Genki, so that might also help you make your decision.

@ΜαρίαΠ Yes, the book will teach you the stroke order, but I think the workbook is much better for that. Though I confess I like the "Look and Learn Kanji" book by the same company as Genki, and the Basic Kanji Book by Bonjinsha. I'll provide links to both books at the end of this comment. You will learn the stroke order using Genki, but you have to really pay attention to the pictures. I prefer using mnemonics to learn, which Look and Learn did in a fantastic way. I also like the Basic kanji book because it groups the kanji together in more easy to remember groups. For example, all kanji that deal with nature are together, ect... Though if I were to be perfectly honest, I would suggest learning the radicals of kanji before doing any kanji work. I did not get to learn kanji this way, and was sent out into the world of kanji the way that a first grader in Japan would be. And while that works for people learning their native language, I have different needs. When we teach someone their native language, we don't just teach them how to spell, we teach them what the word means and how it works in sentences. But you and I, who have already been through the process and know that the word "dog" is a noun, and we know how to use it, we don't need all the other things that come with the way natives learn the language. We simply need to know how to create the word in our new language. And if not all, most, kanji will consist of the 26 or so radicals. You can find that book here, I've not used it, but I have heard nothing but good things from the folks I've talked to that have. www.amazon.com/Remembering-Kanji-Complete-Japanese-Characters/dp/0824835921/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1430361782&sr=8-2&keywords=kanji For books that I have used please see Kanji Look and Learn: www.amazon.com/Kanji-Look-Learn-Eri-Banno/dp/4789013499/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430361861&sr=8-1&keywords=Kanji+look+and+learn The Look and Learn workbook: www.amazon.com/Title-KANJI-LOOK-LEARN-WORKBOOK/dp/4789013502/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1430361886&sr=8-2&keywords=Kanji+look+and+learn OR Basic Kanji Book: www.amazon.com/Basic-Kanji-Book-Vol-1/dp/4893580914/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430361910&sr=8-1&keywords=Basic+Kanji

Hi Xika, Language learning is not a one size fits all deal. So you can indeed learn just speaking if that is what you desire. You do not have to know how to write, but I would highly suggest you take the time to learn how to do it. If you do decide to skip writing, you do at least need to be able to read Japanese text as most good textbooks will drop the romanization (use of Latin letters) pretty quick. I would say you could find a job in Japan if your speaking were pretty good. However, my experience in Japan has lead me to believe that if you do not know how to write, you will struggle a lot more doing basic tasks, like filling out time sheets. They will be in Japanese. I would suggest you take the time to learn to write, it does not take as much time as you might think, plus it will help you with reading the language. I don't know that there is really a way to get around without being able to read. And I would highly suggest sinking the time into that area if you plan to live in Japan. All menus and signs are in the Japanese language and if you can't read those you will be facing a great struggle. I speak from personal experience. The first time I came to Japan, I could only read Hiragana. And it was very difficult for me. I'm much better prepared now that I have can read all three alphabets and write them as well. So keep this in mind as you further your studies. You don't have to learn it now, but I would highly recommend that you put in the time to learn it before you move to Japan. It looks better on job applications if you can write a little in Japanese. I wish you the best with your language learning journey! :)

I started studying with Minna back when I was 17 in my country and I liked it. I was also going to a language school with a professor. But I own the Genki Series and it's a bit of a pain. I also used Japanese for Busy people a couple of years ago in a classroom but the book we were using was in romaji and that threw me off completely. It sucks that I have to study Japanese through English and not my native language but well. I'm been using Mango Languages to get familiar again with the basics. I'm going to Japan in 2018 and I want to be able to communicate a bit more.

Hi! Thanks for your input. I believe that it really comes down to preference with the Genki vs. Minna series. I see merit to both, but I prefer to have Genki. I am also a native English speaker, and therefore do not struggle with some of the issues that you address. I believe that Minna has grammar translations in multiple languages, and therefore might serve other language speakers better. What do you dislike about Genki? I have looked at Japanese for Busy People a couple of times, people want me to review it, but I hesitate because as you said, it uses romanji. And that is just awful to learn through. It is also why I skip a lot of other books. I would say that if you have completed Genki or Minna' (both books) you will have all the skills you need to go over to Japan and do MOST interactions. That is what I did. That will also put you firmly in intermediate classes in Japan regardless of your university (if that is how you are going). Best of luck in Japan! It is such a fun place!

JapanesewithLiz I disliked Genki maybe because of the reasons you mentioned. I finished college almost 4 years ago and some of the subjects are just a bit boring to me. Plus I'm working now and I have to plan my time to do so many things that sometimes I forget I have to study. lmao. Japanese for Busy People now has Kana. My sensei told me it was good for people who are planning on doing business in Japan. I'm going to give Genki another try and then look for the Spanish version of Minna, if not then I'll continue with English since it's been practically my second language for almost 8 years. I would love to live in Japan for a few years. That's another reason why I want to learn the language. But I'm going for just a few days with a big group of people. ^_^ Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna check your other videos later.

I know a few friends of mine who are also learning Korean, are studying Korean through Japanese textbooks and working on two languages at once. It can be done, but it takes a lot more dedication than if you can find it in your native language. Genki and Minna cover the same material. So that is something to consider when purchasing the Minna books. You'll be getting the exact same material. Maybe one or 2 different grammars total, but mostly its all the same beginner stuff.

+EpicGamerBen The only real difference that I've noticed is that they dropped some words that we just don't use anymore, like cassette tape, VCR, and one other really obscure word, and replaced them with Cd, DVD, and I don't even think they kept the one I can't remember. I totally think it is worth getting used. Just double check with the seller that there aren't any permanent marks in the book. Pencil is easy to erase, but pen... I bought my Genki 2 book used, and it's in great shape. I also lost it during my last semester of Elementary Japanese and had to buy the new edition. So I've got both and there IS NOT enough difference to justify the price. Just use updated words. Most of them are English loan anyway. If you ever have a question you can always ask. :)

+Ben Bostwick Yes, you do need to know Hiragana and Katakana before starting either series. The best way to do this is find a program on youtube and use it. There are lots of good resources for teaching you the hiragana and katakana systems on youtube, and you can often download worksheets for your own writing practice. There are some great resources like MLC Japanese, and they give away all that stuff for free. I honestly wouldn't spend the money on buying a book that teaches you either unless that is really something you want to do. www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/Download.htm#Master Hiragana Katakana

I bought minna no nihongo, which I actually regret. I used Genki ebook and wanted to switch over to the real thing, since that's how I improve studies. I was hestitant over these two because they're known as two of the best books for learning Japanese. So I was searching for information over the internet which one I should get. I chose for Minna no Nihongo eventually, and this is my opinion on why Genki is better for self studying. Genki starts off more fun, more basic and has better examples for people who know nothing. People who just started learning Japanese learn easier by talking about daily life things like school, major, food etc. Minna No nihongo in that case start more with uninteresting stuff, which for me is hard to kick in. Not saying that Minna no Nihongo is bad, the only thing is that I think I'll only start using it on the long run, And now JapanesewithLiz, I also have a question for you. Is it necessary to get the workbook for Genki? It's just kinda expensive lol.
@japanesewithliz9103

JazzNL94 Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you were unhappy with Minna no Nihongo. I took many of the points you brought up into consideration when I was creating this video. I figured most folks looking would be self study. You do NOT have to get the workbook. There are so many activities in the textbook that if you skipped the workbook or found a digital copy of it you would be fine. The workbook is very expensive and the key is equally so. If you wanted to skip it you could. I always recommend buying the workbooks because I think they are very helpful. But you do not need to. You'll have plenty to do without it. But it does break down conjugation charts in a way that is very easy to grasp. :) I hope this helps you.

That part about the Genki Answer Key is wrong (or rather misleading). Yes it is in complete japanese, but it has to, it contains the answers to the exercises (which are ofc in japanese). There just isn't anything else in it: Look up the Lesson and specific exercise you did and look straight at the answers. There is nothing more to it.
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would be very helpful for beginners though. But you are correct, there is a key available. It is at an additional cost, and I should have articulated that a bit more clearly. However, because it does not come with the workbook already I still have to list it as a con. I know that my answers always deviated from the ones the book gave when they could. So using the answer key was always tricky for me. I was glad that a native speaker was working with me when I did my studies. I will amend this when I rework these videos.
@Fuzzel
@Fuzzel 9 жыл бұрын
JapanesewithLiz why wouldn't it be helpful for beginners? What do you expect to be in the Answer Key other than the answer which it provides? I used the Genki books to start learning (Second Edition btw) and never had a problem with it.
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
Linard I found trying to navigate the answer book to be very frustrating as a beginner. There was so much stuff in there (first edition by the way, not sure about the second edition book. It might be cleaner and neater.) And I was easily overwhelmed. I also would never have the same answer they were looking for. So I was never sure if I was conjugating some of those "ru" ending verbs that are actually "u verbs' correctly. That is why having the native teacher was so helpful for me. But this is all just my opinion and experience. If it works for you, that is fabulous!
@Fuzzel
@Fuzzel 9 жыл бұрын
JapanesewithLiz The Answer Keys differ then. The second edition is neatly sorted with a heading stating the Lesson, and under that each Exercise Number (also giving the page number). This it how it looks: (Textbook Part) puu.sh/gI4qz/644ac89154.png (Workbook Part) puu.sh/gI4yq/1027b99255.png There is also a segement that has transcripts of all audio files: puu.sh/gI4Cj/21aac424d5.png And the answers very mostly spot on (if you understood the exercise ofc). The only part where they were not is of course the parts where you answered questions about you or should make example sentences on your own. (They still provided example answeres for those)
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
Linard That does look a lot neater than the version I have. Mine is pretty much a mess. But that tends to happen with first editions. They have to work out the kinks and things like that. I'm 'glad that it cleaned up more nicely. I do encourage people to pick it up if they think it would be helpful for them. I just wish it were included and not an extra expense.

Hi cole! All of the Minna No Nihongo books lack English unless you buy the translation guide. Which I do suggest you do. The grammar explanations are in that book. As are the vocabulary lists. You can spend your time looking the explanations up on the internet, but I don't know if that is the most efficient use of your time. This is the new edition of the minna book: www.amazon.com/Minna-No-Nihongo-Beginner-2nd/dp/4883196038/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465571993&sr=8-1&keywords=minna+no+nihongo Is this the one you bought? If so, this is the translation guide you will need if you decide you want it: www.amazon.com/Minna-Nihongo-2nd-Ver-Translation/dp/488319664X/ref=pd_sim_14_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41pGSFGbZML&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL320_SR228%2C320_&refRID=CGZEA1K54C7WM39EXQ7M If you bought the OLD edition, then you bought this one: www.amazon.com/Minna-Nihongo-Book-Bk-Japanese/dp/4883191028/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1465571993&sr=8-2&keywords=minna+no+nihongo And you will need this translation guide: www.amazon.com/Minna-Nihongo-Honyaku-Translation-Grammatical/dp/4883191079/ref=pd_sim_14_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=518%2BP2XKDqL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL320_SR228%2C320_&refRID=A2KRQRMAB1CJ31T795FK So to sum this up, all of the minna no nihongo books have no English in them. You will have to buy the translation guide if you want explanations of the grammar. (This is largely why I dislike this series.)

I used Minna when I was in class but I highly preffer genki, it's way better. In courses, when you don't live at a native English country, they use Minna no Nihongo because it is entirely in Japanese and It have another one apart from the textbook that is explanations on the language that you speak (and as far as I know, genki is only available in English), but I don't like it, I like that genki have everything on it, even kanji...

+JapanesewithLiz I've been currently studying the first genki book (old edition) I've been studying grammar hiragana and katana. But then I though wait where's all the kanji? So then I've been starting to learn kanji while looking at the discussion part - I think it is good to learn the kanji while going through the book which may take a long time to do so but I think in the long term I won't be super stressed about kanji 😂😂 hopefully I can learn Japanese in a year before my year abroad in Japan

If you are struggling with kanji, and can find it "Kanji Look and Learn" is by the same folks, and it is excellent. I did a kanji book video, so if you are curious about what the material is, go check that video out. Kanji should absolutely be learned in context. Because it is much easier to learn it with the vocabulary you are studying than it is to learn it independently.

Hola, thanks for the comparison it has been useful to me, I already own Genki to study on my own. Im gonna start going to a Japanese conversation course in my university and they use Minna no Nihongo so I was wondering if I should get it, also the workbook. PD: you are cute!

Js Saz Hey, thanks for stopping by and watching. If your university is using Minna then you should get it if you are enrolled in the class. There are only a few grammar points that are covered in Minna that are not covered in Genki, and I don't think you are at a detriment at all by not having them. But I always suggest that people get the workbook if they are interested in the series. The workbooks will only help you as you progress through your studies. Best of luck! :D

Kanji not being taught in radical form is not a con in my opinion, because, let´s face it, radical system basically sucks - there are so many exceptions, that you have to be a madman to model your learning based on radicals.
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Partick, I do think that kanji being taught in radical form is way easier to learn, and when you are talking with Japanese friends they will help you by giving you radicals. Like for example they will "spell" their names by telling you which radicals to use. I've modeled a lot of my kanji learning on the radicals system, so I must be mad, but I absolutely think it is more helpful to have it than not. Good luck my friend. I wish you the best on your language learning journey!

Yes, I actually agree with you on the second thought ... learning based on radicals can be efficient to some degree (maybe around 500 characters), but there are simply to many exceptions to use it effectively afterwards ... you basically have to combine multiple methods of learning to learn more than 1000 characters

Hello, I just saw your video because I am looking for a Genki review. I wanted to learn Japanese because I am planning to follow my brother in Japan and work there also. I need to pass the JLPT test. Can you give me an advice please? I am currently working so.....yeah..... Thank you

MissJinn Hello, The Genki series will get you through the JLPT N4. I don't know how high you need to be, but if you are interested in passing that exam and that is your focus then I would suggest that you study the JLPT books. There are several really good ones. I would strongly suggest that you do the Genki series as it is broken down into small chunks and the process is pretty repetitive so you get that rote memorization that is so important to language learning. Depending on how high on the JLPT you need to score really depends on the type of advice and books I can recommend. If you give me some more information on that end I can suggest some fabulous study material for the JLPT. Before you go to Japan you do want to finish the Genki series. It will at least set you up with the foundation stuff. Of course, the actual immersion will do wonders for you. And you'll pick up a ton of things as you live there. But yeah, give me a bit more information on your particular situation and I'll try and help you meet your needs.

JapanesewithLiz Hello, I need to pass JLPT N2. (I know it's TOOOOO high a level for me especially since I know less than 10 japanese words.) Anyways, I plan to self study because I am working in a hospital and I am not sure if I can squeeze a formal study while working. Can you give me an advice? Thank you so much.
@japanesewithliz9103
@japanesewithliz9103 9 жыл бұрын
Well, that is quite the goal. I also am aiming for that level. My advice would be to pick up the Genki books because there are so few of them and work through them. Beginning to end. I would also highly suggest you use anki. It is a digital flashcard set that learns how well you learn words and then gives you the ones you need sooner and the ones you've mastered later. I find it is crazy helpful. It is free. You can watch my video on how to download and install it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHSTf6SdlJp8gpo I assume that you don't know any of the written language either? In that case, I would start there. 100% If you know the written language the rest is going to be easier to master, though not impossible if you don't. But you won't pass the JLPT without knowing the written part. Start with Hiragana and Katakana. There are a lot of free worksheets on line. And I have videos for the whole Hiragana alphabet. You can start with Hiragana A-O. Each lesson is broken down into 5 characters. I think it is easier to learn them if you don't have to do it all at once: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXawdXyKistsns0 (It's my first video, the production value leaves a bit to be desired. But if you find it helpful then the job has been done. **Note: Some of the videos need to be redone, I mucked up a couple of stroke orders. That is what happens after you've done it for 10 + years. You start doing it your own way...** ) After you have learned Hiragana and Katakana (I'm working on videos for that as we speak) then I would move into learning from Genki. Genki will get rid of the romaji (English spellings) very early on, so you want to know as much of the written language as you can. For now, this is what I can offer you in the way of advice. When you have mastered the written language please come back and I'll give you some more tips. :) Best of luck!

Ilan Roberts Which book are you wanting? If you go with Genki, no you do not need the workbook. If you go with Minna I don't think you will need it either. Both have a lot of in text exercises. However, I highly recommend getting the workbooks. But you do not have to at all to benefit from either text.

I'm not sure what you mean by spellings. But they will write out each word in one of the Japapanese character sets. So if you have a solid understanding of hiragana and katakana you'll be in good shape. If you want it spelled out in roman letters, you'll want something like Japanese for Busy people the "Romaji" edition.
