The take on greek mythology showed by this movie is so f****d up. The gods are barely or, in Athena's case, not at all recognizable as who they are. Also, the gods were "politically" more influential the more they were worshipped, but it had nothing to do with either their immortality or their mystical power. Some of the most powerful immortals weren't worshipped at all, take the titans, who ruled before there were any humans on earth, or take the primordial gods like Erebus, Uranus, Gaia or Nyx. The latter feared by even Zeus himself.

Actually I think there is a small problem here with the symbols of Athena. (BTW ) Athena typically shown with shields and armour, but when she was not in a war, then she wore a toga like cloth. Her saint animal was the owl, not the snake. The 3 small winged horses in her hair may refer to Athena, who tamed Pegasus. So I know, that she was hired to play the role of Athena, but some of the symbols used to portrait her really against the common knowledge.

Actually the snake IS an ancient even more archaic symbol of Athena. The Temple to Athena, the Parthenon, showed Athena next to a serpent, which are symbols of wisdom. Dont forget Medusa, which is always closely associated with Athena, is also serpent motifed.

Yeah; I'd actually have no problem believing Artemis and Apollo had that extra-extra-close vibe, considering their motif as twins often suggests them as ultimately inseparable, even though they have very different domains and had different adventures. I think the scene was less super-sexual than it was of two people who don't view their bodies with the same personal space boundaries as others might - twins AND gods, both of which were portrayed as being very familiar with one another.

@Decepticonangell You're right. Athena was played by Izabella Miko and Hollywood isn't really big on accuracy. Though the owl is more associated with Athena, she has also been associated with a large snake, who was her son, Erichthonius, fathered by Hephaestus in his attempt to rape her. Athena is Apollo's half-sister; their shared parent is Zeus. So it's entirely appropriate she refers to Apollo as her brother. This scene, for the most part, is accurate in its depiction.

Yes, that is true. They both have the same mother, Leto. Leto had to find a place to give birth to the twins, but Hera banned them from any place of land. However, Leto found an island and the gods had let Ilithyia, the goddess of childbirth go down to help her give birth to Apollo, the god of music, light, and reason. She also gave birth to Artemis, the goddess of hunt and all newborn creatures. So yes, they are.

But, regardless of how anti-Athena this potrayal is, until the credits say otherwise; or until Ms. Miko herself says otherwise, this girl is Athena. Her own website still says she's Athena and so does dozens of others. So I'll just stick with that for now. I don't know which interview you saw, but the one I saw did mention her role name. Which is *gasp* Athena! :)

Ronoh Ngalan. The gods and goddesses don’t care about things like that as they technically don’t have DNA so it’s not considered incest to them. Like how Zeus and Hera are married she’s his sister yet also his wife, so see it doesn’t matter. There are numerous statues and depictions surviving from that time. Athena was never portrayed as slutty, weak or delicate. She was never shown as a conniving female, too fragile to do anything but sway others with her feminine wiles (as is portrayed here). She was the deity of war-craft (not war), and is often described as the strongest after Zeus (rivaling Hades and Poseidon). She regularly beat Aries in hand to hand combat and would certainly not mope around all meek and girly like this.

@Decepticonangell I meant that her role name wasnt mentioned not even once in the film. In her interview yes, she said that she was Athena ;and so what? She was told that she played athena. Since her name in the movie wasnt heard not even a single time the people who have seen the film and know some basic things about greek mythology can assume what ever they want about which godess was she impersonating. And since hollywood is always wrong i prefer to go with the original myth. :)
